{"id":315,"date":"2005-01-08T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2005-01-08T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"\/article\/investigation-reveals-developer-was-behind-2003-election-mailer"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T05:00:00","slug":"investigation-reveals-developer-was-behind-2003-election-mailer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bransoncourier.com\/?p=315","title":{"rendered":"Investigation reveals developer was behind 2003 election mailer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=3>An investigation by the Missouri Ethics Commission into campaign advertising for the April 8, 2003 Branson municipal election has resulted in a $1,000 fine for a Branson developer.<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=3><\/FONT> <\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=3>The Missouri Ethics Commission, who closed the case Dec. 16, found that Rick Huffman of Branson &#8220;published, circulated or distributed printed matter relative to a candidate for public office but did not identify on that printed matter in a clear and conspicuous manner who paid for the printed matter with the words &#8220;paid for by&#8221; following the identification of who paid for the printed matter.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=3><\/FONT> <\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=3>Commission Senior Field Investigator Michael Brooks visited Branson in the months following the election questioning business owners and other individuals about a mailer that was sent out to all registered voters by an organization known only as &#8220;Citizens for Truth.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=3><\/FONT> <\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=3>The mailer personally attacked then mayoral candidate Ray Wilson and his committee. A cartoon depicting <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:City w:st=\"on\">Wilson as being nothing more than a puppet was also featured on the piece. The printed material had no disclaimer on it noting who paid for the mailer.<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT size=3><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:State w:st=\"on\"><\/FONT><\/FONT> <\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT size=3><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:State w:st=\"on\">Missouri law states any campaign advertising must have the words &#8220;paid for by&#8221; followed by the name of the person, committee or corporation paying for the election material.<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=3>Wilson, who took a position against Branson Landing, which Huffman and the City of <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:City w:st=\"on\">Branson are developing, lost the election to incumbent Lou Schaefer.<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT size=3><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:City w:st=\"on\"><\/FONT><\/FONT> <\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT size=3><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:City w:st=\"on\">Wilson later died in 2003 of an apparent heart attack. <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:City w:st=\"on\">Wilson&#8217;s son, Ryan, said his father would be relieved to know that the truth came out. &#8220;I am glad (the commission) found out who was responsible for the mailer,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I know dad would be happy too. It doesn&#8217;t matter if Huffman paid for it, drew it, thought of it or hired somebody, he is guilty of doing it and knew what was being sent out.<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=3><\/FONT> <\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=3>&#8220;It&#8217;s a shame that Huffman is representing Branson through Branson Landing and did this childish act,&#8221; Ryan Wilson added. &#8220;It makes Branson look bad.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=3><\/FONT> <\/P><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=3>Huffman said he only paid for the printed material&#8217;s postage. &#8220;We were supporting Lou Schaefer in the election and we made a contribution to the campaign,&#8221; he said Thursday in a telephone interview.<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman'; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA\">Huffman said he is under a confidentiality agreement with the Missouri Ethics Commission and can not name other people involved in the creation and distribution of the mailer.<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The mailer personally attacked then mayoral candidate &#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-315","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-branson-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/bransoncourier.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/315","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/bransoncourier.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/bransoncourier.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/bransoncourier.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/16"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/bransoncourier.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=315"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/bransoncourier.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/315\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/bransoncourier.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=315"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/bransoncourier.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=315"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/bransoncourier.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=315"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
