The Hollister Police Department Cracks Down on Impaired Drivers

You Drink & Drive. You Lose.

The Hollister Police Department recently focused extra enforcement efforts on impaired driving laws July 3-5.
During the effort, law enforcement officers issued a total of 21 citations that includes 3 speeding tickets, 1 driving while intoxicated, 5 safety belt and 1 child restraint violation.

“Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is never worth the risk of a tragedy. “We’re working to keep our roads safer” said Chief Preston Schmidt. Driving while intoxicated remains one of the top causes of fatal motor vehicle crashes in Missouri. In 2007, 243 people in Missouri were killed in more than 7,780 alcohol-related crashes. Enforcement efforts like this one help to take impaired drivers off the road and make travel in Missouri safer.

July Family Fun in Branson

Branson, Missouri is known far and wide for its entertaining attractions and shows and is sometimes referred to as “The live music show capital of the world.” However, for families, especially during the month of July, it just might be the “Family fun capital of the world.”

Comparatively speaking, there is more for families to do in Branson, year round, within a smaller conveniently accessible area than just about anywhere else in the country. Where else can a family go and find a world class theme park like “Silver Dollar City”’ an outdoor water park like “White Water,” two indoor water parks, a full service recreational Lake like Table Rock Lake with public beaches and world class fishing, and attractions as diverse as “Branson’s Titanic, the world’s biggest museum attraction,”’ “Branson Scenic Railroad,”’ “The Butterfly Palace,”’ “The World’s Largest Toy Museum” “Dixie Stampede” and many more all located within minutes of each other.”

Silver Dollar City is Branson’s largest and most popular attraction. Even with no festivals going, it has craftsmen, food, and 30 themed rides and attractions offering excitement, thrills and adventure. There are high-speed coasters such as the explosive-launch coaster PowderKeg, named the Best Family Thrill Coaster on the Planet by Thrillride.com, the multi-looping coaster WildFire, the seven story super-swooping Giant Swing and mega-splashing rides like the American Plunge and the Lost River raft ride. Families particularly like it because there are activities and areas that all members of the family can enjoy.

During the month of July through August 9, Silver Dollar City is holding KidsFest featuring the first U.S. performance of JEERK, a Swedish super group that has become a phenomenon in Europe. KidsFest is the most popular of all Silver Dollar City’s Festivals for families because it is specifically designed for kids and families and is held during the peak time of the year when lots of kids and families are in Branson.

There are many things families can do in Branson that are free or at minimal cost. Three that do not cost a thing are the Shepherd of the Hills Trout Hatchery at the foot of Table Rock Dam, a walk along the Branson Landing Boardwalk, and a ride on the free Historic Downtown Branson’s Discovery Trolley.

Branson has a number of other activities from a variety of miniature golf courses, with at least two of them indoors, museums, go cart tracks, and just about any other activity a family could want to do, from cruises on the 278 foot “Show Boat Branson Belle” to Branson’s most popular show and attraction, “Dixie Stampede” with its exciting interactive show featuring 32 horses, stunts and special effects along with a four course meal to movies, helicopter rides, fishing, golfing and shopping.

Branson is fun for families anytime of the year, but July in Branson for families is special. For additional information on activities available for families in Branson call the Branson Tourism Center at 1-800-785-1550 or click here to visit their website www.BransonTourismCenter.com.

Branson’s Magnificent Variety Show is aptly named

Joe Tinoco doing "moves" that would make
Elvis proud during the 50’s hit "Hound Dog."

In a town like Branson Missouri, called by some the “Live music show capital of the world,” someone might ask, “Just what makes the “Magnificent Variety Show” ‘magnificent?’” The answer, simply put, would be, “Because it provides a grand, outstanding and splendid entertainment experience for everyone.”

Paul Miller, General Manager, Branson Tourism Center, one of Branson’s largest and most respected providers of Branson show and attraction tickets, lodging and travel services, provided one of the reason why. He said, “The Magnificent Variety Show enjoys the popularity it does because it has something in it for everyone regardless of age or the type of music they like.”

One of the first things a person seeing the show, particularly for the first time, realizes quickly is that this is a very fast paced and exciting show. The other thing that comes to mind is an appreciation for the planning and attention to detail that has gone into the show’s choreography, flow, and costuming to maintain an almost constant level of anticipation and excitement for the audience.

One such detail is the short videos used during the first half of the show to introduce the music of each decade from the 1940’s to the 2000’s. They are educational, add to the total enjoyment of the show, contain something for both adults and kids and help set the mood for the music that follows. For example, the video for the 1940s included the iconic WWII “Kissing” photo by Life magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt, taken in Times Square on Aug. 15, 1945 as the surrender of Japan, formally ended World War II.

When first hearing about presenting the hits of the 1940’s through the 2000’s, some people may not be overly excited, but the “devil is in the details” and the details of this show involves a lot more than simply singing. Almost every number is accompanied by an entertaining production featuring different styles of dancing, costume changes, or some other interesting feature that holds the audiences’ attention and leaves them wondering what is coming next.

It’s not the type of production relating to big sets etc. It’s the type of production that simply entertains as it seamlessly flows from one number to the next. The simple beauty of Joe Tinoco singing Garth Brook’s 1990’s hit “Dance” as Rachel Martin danced; the presentation of the “Tennessee Waltz/” the 1940’s hit “You Are My Sunshine,” sung by “little miss sunshine,” four year old Talya Tinoco; the “Stomp” and the Phantom of the Opera are just a few examples of the amazing versatility of this show, its entertainers and musicians and why this show is entertaining and exciting for all ages.

Even with great production, choreography, costuming and planning when the pedal hits the metal in a musical variety show it is the quality of the entertainers and musicians that determine the entertainment experience the audience will have. The Magnificent Variety Show has a five piece live band made up of Ricky Holmes piano, and Musical Director, Doug Clifford, drums, Brandon Jenson, Bass, J.T. Lynn, key boards and Geoff Clark, guitar. As one experiences their versatility and musicianship during the show it becomes apparent why they are named “The Magnificent Band.”

In a show this fast paced, each of the casts on stage entertainers Joe Tinoco, Tamara Tinoco, Larry Foster, Ryan Walton, Dusty Wooldridge, Elisha Conner, Rachel Martin and Stephani Haygood has to be both an accomplished vocalist and dancer. It is an amazing thing to watch these entertainers perform. Their singing, dancing, versatility and energy is simply “magnificent.” Although her appearances in the show are very limited and strategically placed Miss Talya Tinoco does an excellent job and relates to the oldest and youngest members of the audience in a special way.

This is a magnificently entertaining show filled with excitement, live music and energy that is pure entertainment and enjoyment. For more information and tickets for the Magnificent Variety Show or any other Branson show, attraction, or lodging please call the Branson Tourism Center at 1-800-785-1550 or click here to go to their web site www.BransonTourismCenter.com.

Vietnam POW/MIAs Memorial Wall of the United States Branson dedication scheduled

The Vietnam POW/MIAs Memorial Wall of the United States will be dedicated in a ceremony on July 4 at 10 a.m. at the Branson Mall in the Veterans Walk of Fame. The wall’s creator, Leo Voss, will be attending.

Sponsored by Branson’s Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter 913, the Vietnam POW/MIAs Memorial Wall of the United States counts those who have never been found from the Vietnam War and the secret wars in Laos. From Minnesota, Voss built the wall in 2000. A Marine who served in Vietnam, his commitment and dedication to build the wall developed through his experiences as a leader of the Southwest Minnesota POW/MIA Color Guard and through giving speeches, talking about the thousands of Americans left behind at the end of the wars waged in Vietnam and Korea.

In speaking, the numbers “go right over peoples’ heads. When you see the names – that touches peoples’ hearts,” Voss said.

Etched with some 2,560 names, it is a stark reminder of those who have not returned. Some of the names are marked with white, green and/or red stars. White stars mark the POW/MIAs whose remains have been returned – only 17 percent of those listed. Green stars are beside 11 percent of the names – POW/MIAs who might have survived captivity. Red stars, almost 10 percent, denote the soldiers who fought in the secret wars in Laos.

“What better day could we choose to dedicate this wall than the very day we celebrate our Independence? Let us not forget those who may have lost theirs,” said President of VVA Chapter 913 Bill Groninger, who served in the Air Force. “There are significances in all of those names. Each name deserves an accounting. Our group is helping update the list of names on the wall to keep it current.

Groninger said the chapter has also planned a book in memory of those on the wall and will attempt to locate information on all listed. We plan to enlist the assistance of students from Hollister (Mo.) High School with the book project. As the Memorial Wall’s creator, Leo Voss has completed the research on those from his home state of Minnesota. We want to help him with the rest. Another way the public can be involved is by supporting this project. The Branson VVA may be contacted at 417-230-6446.

Mishka bears all at Branson show

During the middle of June there was an unconfirmed rumor going around Branson that “Yakov’s Moscow Circus” would bare it all on or about June 23. Some were aghast that Branson’s family entertainment image might be endangered and at, of all places, “a circus with children in attendance.” That was only of course, until they found out that what the only thing that would be bared was the real bears that would be coming to the circus for a limited engagement.

On June 23, “Mishka the Russian Bears” started their limited engagement at Yakov’s Moscow Circus. Although Yakov’s Moscow Circus is currently performing a limited engagement at Yakov’s Theatre in Branson running through September 7, Mishka, the Russian Bears will only be appearing through July 5.

Information received from Yakov’s Moscow Circus says it features Andre the Clown and International Flying Adagio Star Marina along with a revolving line up of exciting and unique acts including Irina Markova and her award-winning canine troupe with their feline friends, Pavlina Gyumisheva the Human Slinky, Igor & Denis “The Strongmen of Moscow”, National Unicycling Champion Anthony Soumiatin, Boris the Wonder Dog and now Mishka the Russian Bears.

Yakov says, “Moscow Circus is a combination of comedy, adventure, romance, magical family chemistry and exciting human and animal performance art. It creates a fun story for everyone to enjoy.”

Yakov’s Moscow Circus will be appearing in Branson at Yakov’s Theatre on Tuesday through Sunday until September 7. For more information and specific scheduling on “Yakov’s Moscow Circus” and Branson’s other shows and attractions and accommodations call the Branson Tourism Center at 1-800-785-1505 or visit their website www.bransontourismcenter.com.

Three fun ways to stay cool and beat the heat in Branson

Moonshine Beach on shore of Table Rock Lake.

With June Heat Indexes reaching over 100 on some days, summer has come to the Ozarks and Branson a little sooner than usual The good news, according to Paul Miller, General Manager, Branson Tourism Center, is that Branson has lots of ways to stay cool and beat the heat of summer. “Three that can really cool off Branson visitors, he said, “Are White Water, Moonshine Beach, and Branson’s Titanic Museum.”

Miller said that White Water, operated by the same company that operates Silver Dollar City and the Showboat Branson Belle, has 12 acres and two million gallons of cool liquid fun and excitement to help cool the summer’s heat. It has more than 7,000 feet of water slides, a dozen rides and is located near the west end of the Branson Strip.

One of its major features is Kalani Towers, a seven story tall six slide ride. Two of the slides have 300 foot drops enabling speeds of up to 40 mph and four have 312 foot slides located immediately adjacent to each other that permit lane racing at speeds up to 25 mph. Other cooling rides are the Raging River Rapids a two slide ride wrapping around a huge five story high waterfall as riders race to the pool below; the Bermuda Triangle, a fast paced enclosed slide; the Caribbean Plunge and Tropical Twister rapid-water raft rides; Surfquake, a 500,000 gallon wave pool producing 4-foot waves and the Lazy River, a gently moving river for just floating and relaxing.

Miller points out that one of the country’s premier recreational lakes, Table Rock Lake can also offer respite from summer heat. Although most people are aware of the great fishing, boating and other recreational uses of Table Rock Lake, a lot of Branson’s tourists are not aware of the fact that it has a major beach that is readily accessible for Branson visitors to use.

Moonshine Beach was closed last season because of high water damage, but just recently reopened. It is located just north of Table Rock Dam on State Highways 165/265 and is operated by the U.S. Corps of Engineers. In addition to its large swimming beach Moonshine Beach’s amenities include a play ground, picnic areas, a boat launch ramp, flush toilets and showers. It is open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and there is a daily charge of $4.00 per vehicle.

Miller says that another Branson attraction with some surprise relief from the heat is Branson’s Titanic, the world’s largest museum attraction. Like the majority of Branson’s indoor attractions and shows the Titanic is air conditioned, but it has some “cooler surprises” towards the end of the exciting “voyage” as the Titanic approaches and hits the iceberg that sends her to the bottom of the Atlantic. It is literally a chilling experience followed by a real “cool “hands on experience near the lifeboats.

For additional information on these and other really cool Branson shows, attractions, and activities call the Branson Tourism Center at 1-800-875-1550 or visit www.BransonTourisimCenter.com.

Cruising Branson’s Lakes

Showboat Branson Belle on Table Rock Lake.

Branson is blessed with so many shows, attractions, and other activities it is sometimes hard to choose what to do from the bewildering number of choices available. However, for those who might want to slow down, relax, and have a unique entertainment experience, a cruise on one of Branson’s two major lakes, Table Rock Lake or Lake Taneycomo might just fill the bill…

The two lakes are very different lakes with Table Rock being the largest and deepest with over 43 thousand surface acres, and 800 miles of shoreline. It is Branson’s main lake for swimming, recreational boating, fishing, and water sports.

Table Rock Lake is also home to Branson’s largest cruise boat, the Showboat Branson Belle. The 278 foot long Branson Belle is a replica of the old time stern wheel river boats and is actually propelled through the water by her two huge 24 foot paddle wheels. On the typical day she leaves from her dock at the “White River Landing, located just south of Table Rock Dam on State Highways 165/265, three times a day for a lunch cruise at noon and dinner cruises at 4 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

A cruise on the Showboat Branson Belle is more than just a cruise. It is about two hours of beautiful Table Rock Lake scenery, great food and quality entertainment. Paul Miller, General Manager for the Branson Tourism Center, advises advance reservations, particularly during weekends, holidays and in the fall because of the popularity of the Show Boat Branson Belle. He also points out that the 4:00 p.m. dinner cruise returns in plenty of time for those wanting to attend an 8:00 p.m. Branson show to do so.

Branson’s Lake Taneycomo is a long narrow 22 mile long impoundment of the White River that flows right past downtown Branson and Branson Landing. Branson Landing serves as the “home port” for Branson Landing Cruises’ 100 foot long luxury yacht “Branson Landing Princess” and the river boat replica, “Lake Queen.”

Although there is narration on sightseeing cruises there is no formal show or entertainment included as part of the Branson Landing Cruises. Most cruises have food and beverage service, ranging from snacks, breakfast, lunch, pizza, or full dinner service, depending on the particular cruise. Cruises aboard either the Branson Landing Princess or the Lake Queen should provide an excellent view of the Branson Landing water front, majestic Ozark bluffs, the beauty of the Ozarks along with an excellent chance to observe various species of ducks, Canada Geese, Grey Herons, Black or Turkey Vultures (buzzards), an occasional Bald Eagle and other birds along with other area wildlife.

Branson Tourism Center’s Miller again suggests advance reservations for these cruises to insure availability. He also said, particularly with the evening cruises, that there is an excellent chance of seeing the Branson Landing Fire and Light Show from a unique water side perspective.

Further information on these cruises is available individually through their respective web sites www.bransonlandingcruises.com or www.showboatbransonbelle.com or collectively by contacting Branson Tourism Center by phone at 1-800 785-1550 or through its website www.BransonTourismCenter.com.

The Walker Family a.k.a. Redhead Express.

According to information received from the Dutton Family Theatre, the Walker Family a.k.a. the “Redhead Express,” will be performing their Branson show at the Dutton Family Theatre starting on July 6. Judith Dutton, speaking for the Dutton Family Theatre, said that a more detailed schedule of Redhead Express performances will be available within 48 hours, but that in general they will be performing at either 2:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. depending on the date during the summerwith additional times possible starting in the fall.

“The Walkers are such an inspiration to us!" says Sheila Dutton. “They are wonderfully talented musicians that we have become very good friends with and we are so excited to add them to the lineup at our theater.” She went on to say that they will have three great shows at the theater; The Duttons, Island Fire and the Redhead Express.

The Walker Family website www.redheadexpress.com, states that the Walker Family is “equally at home playing straight forward bluegrass as they are playing their own unique renditions of old timey and gospel.” It also points out that the show “showcases their four daughters’ beautiful harmonies, original songs, and increasing musical maturity,” while three talented young boys round out the band and “mom and dad add vocal depth, backup, and guidance to the ensemble.”

Through July 5 Redhead Express will continue to performat the Circle B Theatre. The information stated, “Due to scheduling issues in the Fall and the mid-year expiration of their performance contract, The Redhead Express and the Circle B were unable to negotiate a new contract.” Brett Walker of Redhead Express stated, “The Circle B gave us a home and an opportunity to get started in Branson. We will always be grateful to the Horns for that start.”

Apryll Walker said that a lot of their closest business associates advised them “that the matinee and morning show market would be ideal” for their show. They found that the Dutton Family Theater was a perfect fit. Bret Walker said other factors involved with the decision to move was the location of the theatre on Highway 76, a larger stage and the theatre’s state of the art sound and lighting.

What a country, what a show, what a man, and what fun

Yakov sharing Laboratory of Laughter with
his audience.

From its “Star Spangled” beginning the audience at the Yakov Smirnoff Show knows they are in for something special. Yakov’s unique blend of humor, personality, natural unforced patriotism and ability to establish a rapport with his audience coupled with great production, costuming, and dancing fulfills that expectation and then some.

As one would expect from America’s favorite Russian comedian there is a lot of funny lines and comedy routines. Most of these routines are built around themes and are introduced by full production numbers.

In the typical comedy show one might not expect much in terms of production, but this is no typical comedy show. The dancers, costuming, and music are excellent and choreographed into the show along with excellent sets to provide an exciting quality entertainment experience. To paraphrase the words of Yakov himself, “You might not have thought about production numbers in a comedy show, but you will now.”

The dancers are referred to as the “Russian Dancers” and are they good. They participate throughout the show in a variety of ways from “Secret Service Agents” to “lab assistants,” but it is their dancing that adds a special element to the show. Two of the dancing highlights are the “Russian Hoedown” and the actual performance of “Russian Dancing.” These are some very talented dancers dancing some well choreographed pieces.

In the first half, Yakov’s comedy runs from the Celestial to the Presidential with lots of laughter in between. Not only does it answer the age old question, “How can women love men,” but answers other weighty questions relating to important domestic and world issues as only “President Yakov” could. A highlight is when the President takes random questions from the audience.

One of the highlights of the second half is the “Laboratory of Laughter” which is a mixture of comedy, psychology, laughter and love. You will laugh at the comedy Yakov used in illustrating the importance of laughter to happiness and love. Yet, some might be moved to tears as he describes his family’s first days in New York and their befriending by their landlady. Either way it is a remarkable and unique journey shared in a warm, funny, and caring way.

Although you might not have thought about laughter being the key to happiness, “You will now.” Among many of the relational nuggets of wisdom Yakov shares is “Never go to bed angry. Central Pro-Am Association partners with Professional Anglers Association

When Jim Thompson, long time competitive bass fisherman and local Branson businessman, acquired the ownership of the Central Pro-Am Tournament Association (CPAA) a few months ago he said, “I am very excited about this new opportunity and challenge that I have been blessed with.” Thompson went on to say that the number one goal of CPAAwas to meet the needs of the fishermen.

Under the leadership of Thompson, the CPAA Advisory Board and staff have revitalized the CPAA and are guiding it through an extremely successful 2009 tournament season. In striving to give its fishermen a better fishing experience the CPAA has just announced a partnership with one of the fastest growing fishing associations in the country, the Professional Anglers Association (PAA).

Scarcely able to contain his excitement Thompson said, “This is huge, for CPAA and our fishermen.” He went on to say that the PAA is the only angler driven and owned professional fishing organization in the country and the partnership that provides, except for a $50.00 general membership in the PAA, a no cost means for CPAA fisherman to progress to the next level up the tournament trail, the PAA.

In a recent letter announcing the partnership, Danny Blandford, PAA’s Business Development Manager said, “It is with great excitement that I draft this letter, as it is the start of a partnership between the Professional Anglers Association (PAA) and the Central Pro Am Association. Our new affiliation brings together two organizations with a unifying theme of tournament bass fishing, and support of our membership, the fishermen.” In the letter John Crews, President of the PAA said, “We are excited to implement partnerships such as this, as we feel it gives strength to both organizations, and as a result creates more opportunities for the anglers, which is important to the PAA.”

Thompson pointed out that the first immediate benefit to CPAA anglers is that, as a supporting partner, the PAA provides PayDay Sanctioning of the CPAA tournaments, and will reward PAA members taking first place in any CPAA with an additional $250 bonus. He said the bonus applies individually to Professional, Non Boater (Amateur) and Team division anglers for their CPAA wins. In addition, all CPAA members in good standing, who join the PAA by July 31, 2009 will be entered into a drawing to win an all expense paid trip to fish the PAA Corporate Cup on Pickwick Lake in Florence, AL September 10 – 12, 2009.

As he explained what will happen in 2010, Thompson said that 2010 Central Pro Am Angler of the Year, in both the Pro and Non Boater (Amateur) Divisions will win an expense paid “ride” to fish the entire 2011 PAA Tournament Series including paid entry fees, food, fuel and lodging allowances for the entire season.. To qualify anglers must be members of both Central Pro Am and the Professional Anglers Association before the start of the 2010 Central Pro Am season.

In his letter, PAA’s Blandford said, “This is truly a one of kind opportunity, which no other tournament organization has to offer. We at the PAA feel that a program such as this illustrates the commitment of Central Pro Am to their anglers, and this partnership.”

Thompson pointed out that the PAA schedule coupled with all the fees and expenses being paid will give CPAA anglers a viable opportunity to move to the next level of tournament competition without having to quit their current jobs. He said, “This could make a couple of our angler’s lifelong goals come true in one year.”

Further information on the CPAA and PAA is available on their respective websites.

Will Branson show bare it all?

There is an unconfirmed rumor going around Branson that “Yakov’s Moscow Circus” will bare it all on or about June 23. Some might be aghast that Branson’s family entertainment image could be endangered and at, of all places, a circus. That is, until they find out that what the show might “bare” is exciting news about “bears,” real bears.

Yakov’s Moscow Circus is currently performing a limited engagement at Yakov’s Theatre in Branson running through September 7. Will the bare all on the bears actually happen? Only that very funny man, Yakov Smirnoff and the Moscow Circus knows what, if anything will be bared and when.

The anticipation and excitement of waiting is a bear. The good news is that information on the latest bare bones facts about “Yakov’s Moscow Circus” and Branson’s other shows and attractions can be laid bare by calling the Branson Tourism Center at 1-800-785-1505 or visiting their website www.BransonTourismCenter.com.

JEERK featured at Silver Dollar City’s KidsFest

Veggi Tales Bob the Tomato and Larry
the Cucumber posing with some of the kids.

If Branson, the “Live music shows capital of the world” had a “festival capital” it would have to be its largest and most popular attraction, Silver Dollar City. Already a world class theme park, Silver Dollar City holds a continuous series of varied high quality fun filled festivals throughout the year. Starting with “WorldFest” in the spring and ending with “An Old Time Christmas” in November and December, Silver Dollar City is continually evolving from one fun filled and exciting festival to another. In terms of fun and excitement, “Kidsfest” running from June 6 through August 9 is no exception..

Paul Miller. General Manager of Branson Tourism Center, said, “Even for a place known for its festivals, KidsFest is the most popular of all Silver Dollar City’s Festivals for kids and their families.” He believes that popularity stems from the fact the festival is specifically designed for kids and families and is held during the peak time of the year when lots of kids and families are in Branson.

New this year will the first U.S. performance of JEERK, a Swedish super group that has become a phenomenon in Europe. Brad Schroeder, Silver Dollar City’s Director of Special Events said, “Kids love action, and JEERK presents an energetic and outrageous combination of dance, percussion, music and acrobatics, all in flawless precision.”

In addition, information received from Silver Dollar City indicates KidsFest will feature “kid-favorite entertainment productions” including the “Magic of Peter Gossamer,” an original live stage show from VeggieTales, and “Kid Concoctions.” The Magic of Peter Gossamer will feature comedy, tricks, vanishings and levitations. America’s favorite talking vegetables will star in a VeggieTales live stage show musical adventure created exclusively for Silver Dollar City called “The Invention of Silliness.” The Kid Concoctions Activity Center, is a hands-on activity where kids can make their own creations from the acclaimed Kid Concoctions books and television show.

In addition to all the value added KidsFest activities Silver Dollar City has its craftsmen, food, and 30 themed rides and attractions offering excitement, thrills and adventure. There are high-speed coasters such as the explosive-launch coaster PowderKeg, named the Best Family Thrill Coaster on the Planet by Thrillride.com, the multi-looping coaster WildFire, the 7-story super-swooping Giant Swing and mega-splashing rides like the American Plunge and the Lost River raft ride.

Branson Tourism Center’s Miller reminds those attending KidsFest that the same company owns both Silver dollar City and another very popular family summer attraction, “White Water.” Located east of Silver Dollar City on State Highway 76, Whitewater offers 12 acres of tropical excitement with more than a dozen rides, attractions, and 7,000 feet of water slides creating two million gallons of fun and enjoyment for kids and their families. He suggests those planning to attend both parks can save money by purchasing combination tickets. For further information on KidsFest, Silver Dollar City or White Water call 1-800-785-1550.

First step on a walk into Branson’s history

50 years of live Branson music shows started
in a building on this location.

With all the shows, attractions and other activities Branson has to offer sometimes a person might wish for an activity that’s a little more laid back and moves at a more selfcontrolled pace. In Branson those opportunities abound with one of them being the free “DownTown Branson Historic Walking Tour.”

The tour covers the historic downtown Branson area, is self guided and, without the Old Stone Church and Branson Hotel B&B, Stops 15 and 16, is flat and level. A tour brochure is available from the office of the Downtown Main Street Association (DMSA) located at 119 W. Pacific Street in historic downtown Branson.

Although listed as Stop 4 in the brochure, stop as soon as you get out the door of DMSA. You will be located on the north side of Pacific Street which runs east and west. If you look directly south, across Pacific Street, you will see something that relatively few people who come to Branson have really “seen.”Oh, most people see the parking lot and public restroom. But even as Branson celebrates 50 years of live music shows, most people don’t realize that they are looking at the very spot where “It all started.”

In 1959 the Mabe brothers Bob, Bill, Jim and Lyle, along with Delbert Howard and Chick Allen, decided to provide evening entertainment to tourists visiting the Branson area. They used a simple format of blending popular country music with original unique comedy routines. The name of the show was the “Baldknobbers” and today, 50 years later, the Mabe family is still entertaining Branson audiences using a blend of country and popular music and original comedy.

In 1959, the original Branson City Hall was located up near where the restrooms are located today. The Mabe brothers rented a 50 seat auditorium in the basement and started doing their show two nights a week. The show proved successful and they later moved town to the Lake Taneycomo lakefront before moving to their current location on West Highway 76.

Interestingly, while standing in the same location, if one looks to the southeastern edge of the parking lot, where the alley runs through, they will notice the back end of the Owen Theatre, Branson’s first theatre. It was a movie theatre built by Jim Owen in 1935 to provide entertainment for Branson tourists, a lot of whom were fishing clients of his guide service.

Although almost three decades separated the Owen Theatre from the Baldknobbers, one cannot help but notice the synergy. It is not only a synergy of location, but of purpose, the entertaining of Branson’s tourists. Today, 50 years later and with enough shows in Branson for it to be called the “Live Music Show Capital of the World,” that simple purpose has not changed.

Choices Branson air travelers make can cost time and money

With the opening of Branson’s newest airport, currently named “Branson Airport,” travelers to Branson now have a choice of two airports to choose from and competitive low cost airfares. Yet, just in case it comes up in a trivia quiz, none of the airports serving Branson are actually located in Branson.

The closest commercial airport to Branson is the Branson Airport (BKG) which is located about 8 miles and a 10 to 15 minute drive southeast of Branson. It has been open to commercial air traffic since May 11, 2009 and is currently served by AirTran and Sun Country.

The Springfield-Branson National Airport (SGF) is located about 50 miles and a 60 minute drive northwest of Branson. It is served by Allegiant, American Eagle, Delta, NWA and United.

At first blush it seems superfluous to even mention another airport and carriers serving Branson with Branson Airport only being 8 miles away. But aren’t there other factors that should be considered also that could be as important?

In today’s economy, it would seem that price might be one of those factors. Although SGF has been serving Branson for decades it was notorious for high prices. Some believe this actually helped pave the way for the private development of BKG based on the fact that it would offer low cost air service to Branson. The good news for Branson air travelers is that in doing so it forced the air carriers flying into SFG to lower their fares to compete.

For example, at 3:00 p.m. on June 7, 2009, www.kayak.com showed that two travelers, traveling from Chicago to Branson on July 11 and returning on Jul 18 could fly round trip to Branson through SGF on American Eagle for $192.20 each. Kayak showed that the same itinerary on AirTran Airlines into BKG would cost $350.90 per passenger. The total difference on the two round trip tickets is $317.40. For that kind of savings, some travelers might elect to drive the extra 50 minutes and 42 miles to Branson.

Sharon Budnick, Manager, Branson Travel Agency, a sister entity of Branson Tourism Center, points out that travelers flying into Branson have more practical and flexible options available than ever before. She said, “Travelers flying into Branson should consider all the factors including price, travel distance and time from the arrival airport, length of flight, scheduling, and the options that are available to the traveler if there is an issue with a connecting flight.”

Budnick also suggests that most air travelers to Branson will need a rental car. BKG is a private airport and has only one rental car agency “Enterprise.” Unlike the vast majority of other airports in the United States, BKG does not permit other rental car agencies to pick up their customers at the airport. She advises travelers going into BKG, not using Enterprise, to have local contact and other appropriate information for the agency they will be renting from prior to their arrival at BKG. The car rental situation at SGF, in terms of choices and manner of operation, is the same as that found in most airports.

Peter Pan helps Special Kids Fly in Branson

Recently, five-year-old Parker Strobeck wasn’t too sure he wanted to fly. Parker’s indecision was on the set of “Peter Pan” currently playing at Branson’s “The Mansion Theatre through Dec. 12. But when the star of the show, Cathy Rigby, came out dressed as Peter Pan, Strobeck changed his mind. Parker, along with two other children who have muscular dystrophy got the flight of their lives as they soared in the rigging Rigby uses in “Peter Pan.

As aerial designer Paul Rubin gently pulled the ropes, hoisting Parker six inches above the stage, Parker , of Omaha, AR said, “Don’t put me up too high.” . Within a minute, Parker was swinging across the stage, grinning at his mother, Kerri Strobeck. She said Parker had recently enjoyed his “Make A Wish” visit to Disney World.

Rubin also gave flights to Thomas Canter(CQ), 7, of Ozark, and Xavier Kleiber, 13, from Stotts City. To the children’s delight, Rigby gave them packets of “fairy dust” to sprinkle. “Think good thoughts,” she said. Also watching the event was Mansion owner Gene Bicknell. MDA has personally touched him, he said. He lost his niece Dellena Scofield to the disorder.

A news crew from KOLR-10 in Springfield, Mo., taped the flights for use during the annual Labor Day Muscular Dystrophy Telethon.

Rigby became America’s favorite when she was on the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team in 1970. She started touring in “Peter Pan” in 1974, and said she has done the rigorous show 2,700 times. Rigby said. “It’s maintaining the energy of a 10-year-old boy, who jumps on furniture and runs around the room while he’s singing and then performs aerial ballet, and that’s in the first scene.”

“Peter Pan” staring Cathy Rigby, is playing at The Mansion Theatre Tuesdays through Sundays at 8 p.m. with Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 3 p.m through Dec. 12. For information or to purchase tickets call Branson Tourism Center at 1-800-785-1550 or visit www.bransontourismcenter.com.

Branson’s unique tourism tripod

Branson, the live music show capital of the world, has a passion for providing the millions of tourists that come to Branson each year a quality and variety of entertainment that is both memorable and unique. From a world class theme park, its great shows and lakes, Branson provides the opportunity for an entertainment experience that is unrivaled anywhere.

If a person used one of Branson major destination web sites such as www.branson.com or contacted a major provider of Branson tourism services such as the Branson Tourism Center for information about what there is to do in Branson, they would literally be overwhelmed by the hundreds of shows, attractions, and activities available. Yet, if Branson were a camera sitting on a tripod, it would be supported by the three legs Branson’s Shows, Silver Dollar City, and Table Rock Lake.

If one of those legs were missing the Branson of today would be, to say the least, unstable and at risk of losing its relevance as a major tourist destination. An argument could also be made that not only is the Branson of today being supported by the “tourism tripod,” but was built upon it.

Branson’s shows are the first leg of the tripod. It started in 1959 when the Mabe family opened Branson’s first live commercial show the “Baldknobbers, A few years later the Presleys’ built their theatre on what has now become the “Branson Strip.” From that simple beginning, Branson has grown to the point where, because of the the number and quality of its live shows, Branson is billed as “the live music show capital of the world.”

“Silver Dollar City,” the second leg of the tripod, was opened in 1960 by the Herschend family and has developed into a world class theme park that is easily Branson’s number one paid attraction. Silver Dollar City is constantly evolving with new festivals, rides, or shows designed to give its guests “memories that will last a lifetime.” Of equal importance to Branson is the promotion, both in market and out of market, that Silver Dollar City does promoting not only itself but Branson.

The last leg of the tripod is Table Rock Lake. The result of the Table Rock Dam, which was completed in 1958, Table Rock Lake, along with the world class trout fishery it created in Lake Taneycomo, added a vital water component to Branson’s entertainment offerings. This leg of the tripod also represents the natural beauty of the Ozarks which along with Table Rock Lake and Lake Taneycomo contributes tremendously to the uniqueness of the Branson entertainment experience.

In 1958, Branson was basically a small laid back town in the Ozarks. Then, one at a time, the legs of the tourism tripod, Branson Shows, Silver Dollar City and Table Rock Lake, were firmly put in place. The entertainment concept of “Branson” was firmly attached to the top of that tripod and the rest has become entertainment history.

Debby Boone lights up Branson

Debby Boone poses for a picture with Linda
and Larry Hoffman of Norfolk, NE as she visits
with them in the Branson Tourism Center’s.
reception area.

Debbie Boone, who made the song “You Light Up My Life” one of the biggest hits of all time is lighting up Branson. She is in Branson promoting the show she will be doing at the Oak Ridge Boys Theatre during Branson’s Ozark Mountain Christmas. During an interview held while she was making a stop at the Branson Tourism Center, Boone said the show will be a combination of her road show, “Reflections of Rosemary” and a family celebration of a traditional Christmas with all its music and sharing of family.

And what a family celebration that should be. Boone is the daughter of Pat Boone, the granddaughter of Red Foley or as she calls him, “Daddy Red”, and the daughter in- law of singer actress Rosemary Clooney. “Reflections of Rosemary” is a tribute to Clooney. She was an actress and singer who had a number of Billboard chart hits during the 50s with a number of them, such as “This Ole House,” “Hey There” and “Come On-a My House,” making it to the number 1 position on the charts. She also starred with Bing Crosby in the Christmas movie classic, “White Christmas.”

Boone was excited about the fit of her show to Branson’s audiences saying her Branson show, with its combination of great music, sharing of family and experiences through personal, interesting and fun stories and a few other surprises, is a perfect fit. She said, “The audiences that come to Branson appreciate really good music” and emphasized the quality of the music in the show saying, “It is beautiful, melodic, gorgeous music” with great arrangements being played by great musicians.

When asked what song she is currently performing that she had the most personal passion for and why, Boone said that although it could change, depending on the day, her mood, and audience, most days it is “You Light Up My life.” Continuing on, she said, “On any given day that song takes on different levels of meaning to me and the people in my audience.”

Boone said she enjoys the Branson tradition of “meet and greet” where the performers meet with the audience after the show to shake hands, take pictures, sign autographs, etc. She said, “If you don’t connect with your audience then the relationship doesn’t have anywhere to go.”

While she was at the Branson Tourism Center, Debby took the time to meet some of the staff and customers on a one to one basis. As one observed her interacting with them it became obvious that the woman who can sing “You Light Up My Life” with such passion has the same passion for people and was, even if for only for a few moments with each, lighting up the lives of those she was meeting.

Boone will be appearing at the Oak Ridge Boys Theatre Nov. 3 through Dec. 5 as the special guest with the “Country Tonite Show.” The first half of the show will be the “Country Tonite Show” and the second half Debby Boone’s show. For specific schedules, additional information, or to purchase tickets for this show call 1-800-785-1550.

Branson’s White Water turns water on for summer fun and adventure

Kalani Towers four 312 foot racing slides with
its two 300 foot drop slides to the right.

Branson is noted for its variety of shows, attractions, and entertainment, but “surfing?” Where in Branson can visitors surf? At the same place where they can enjoy 7,000 feet of water slides, some of which have drops of 300 feet, swim, splash, enjoy island themed foods and relax with their families amid tropical landscapes, at “White Water” Branson’s tropical adventure park

White Water is 12 acres of tropical excitement with more than a dozen rides, attractions, and 7,000 feet of water slides creating two million gallons of fun and enjoyment for its guests. Located toward the western end of the famous Branson Strip, its Kalani Towers literally towers above all the area’s surrounding structures.

According to a recent White Water press release describes Kalani Towers as “a 7- story, 6- slide, multi-experience thrill ride” Two of the slides have 300 foot drops enabling freefall body sliding at speeds of up to 40 mph. The other four slides are 312 foot slides located immediately adjacent to each other and permit lane racing at speeds up to 25 mph.

Jackie Smith, White Water’s General Manager said, “Kalani Towers is our biggest draw.” Smith pointed out that although Kalani’s 300 foot drop slides “are an unbelievable thrill” its four racing slides are even more popular because people and families love to race each other.

The Raging River Rapids is 400 feet of “one of the wildest rides in the park” with its two slides wrapping around a huge 5- story high waterfall as riders race to the pool below. Some of the parks other rides are the Bermuda Triangle, a fast paced enclosed slide; the Caribbean Plunge and Tropical Twister rapid-water raft rides; Surfquake, a 500,000 gallon wave pool producing 4-foot waves and the Lazy River, a gently moving river for just floating and relaxing.

Splash Island is a play area for smaller kids with shooting nozzles, spray hoses and slides, all in a shallow pool and RainTree Island, for the older kids, has aqua-shooters, slides, splash geysers and a massive 700-gallon tipping bucket.

The park also offers a variety of other amenities such as Sand Volleyball, tropical landscapes, shaded areas and an assortment of island themed and other foods. It even rents “Cool Cabanas” complete with fans, television, and seating for up to 8 people.

Paul Miller, General Manager for Branson Tourism Center said, “White Water is one of Branson’s most popular attractions during the summer.” Miller continued, “White Water is owned by the same company that owns Silver Dollar City, easily Branson’s number one paid attraction, and that visitors who plan to visit both can save money by buying combination tickets permitting multiple day access to both parks.”

White Water is open May 23 – September 7. Miller points out that particularly in the early and later parts of its schedule White Water’s days and hours of operation vary. For additional information on White Water, its schedule, or to purchase tickets call 1-800-785-1550.

Magic, Fun. and comedy are not an illusion at Hamner Barber Variety Show

Dave Hamner amazing audience as beautiful
tropical birds appear from nowhere and fly
out over them.

Branson has a variety of “variety” shows, but the “Hamner Barber Variety Show” is different in a truly “magical” and “funny” way. Its variety is straight forward magic, ventriloquism and comedy, but the way they are presented, by two masters of their craft, Illusionist David Hamner and comedian-ventriloquist Jim Barber, separates this variety show from any other in Branson, perhaps in the world.

The basic format of the show is simple, let two of the best entertainers in their respective fields do what they do best surrounded by a great supporting cast, choreography, and production. Predictably, the result is great illusions, ventriloquism, and comedy produced and presented in a manner that holds the interest of audiences of all ages.
There are relatively few shows in Branson that will hold the interest of children for the majority of the show. There are still fewer that can hold the interest of children while genuinely doing the same thing for adults. The Hamner Barber Variety Show is one of these shows. The constant rotation of the magic with the comedy and ventriloquism flows smoothly from one segment to the next keeping the audience waiting in anticipation for what is coming next and it makes no difference whether the age of the audience member is 10 or 70.

The tricky thing about writing about a magic show is not to spoil the surprise of the illusions. What can be safely said however is the magic covers a full range of illusions from the simple elegance of the “Magic of the Silver Coins” to exotic birds that fly off the stage over an enthralled audience, and illusions that “conquer” mountains, “spike” ones interest, and are of biblical proportions.

Jim Barber and Seville or is it
Seville and Jim Barber?

It is not just the variety of the magic; it is the manner in which Hamner, his wife, Denise, and their supporting cast, present that magic. Dancers A.J. Heard, Ken Brown, and Kelly Nolte, who also double as magic assistants along with Lex Pearson and Michael Maeder, have been choreographed and worked into the presentation of the vast majority of illusions. The result is some of the most beautiful, entertaining and exciting magic available on any stage anywhere.

It could almost be said that the magic doesn’t stop with the Hamner’s because some of the things that Jim Barber, master ventriloquist and comedian, does almost seems magical. The comedy and operatic duet with Seville is amazing, but when it turns into trio that’s “magic.”

Audience members might wonder why Barber opened the bag and kept the “baby,” but they will not be able to stop laughing because he did. Not to be outdone by the Hamner’s and their exotic birds, Barber works with a Chihuahua type character called “Chico Pete” and takes the audience to new levels of laughter all the while demonstrating why he is one of the nation’s top ventriloquists.

The show’s tribute to America’s veterans, living and dead, active duty personnel and their families is a show highlight that is both innovative and beautifully, humbly, and respectfully presented from the heart. In the world of illusions, performers have made people, airplanes, animals, trucks, and even mountains disappear or appear, but none has topped the emotional and patriotic size of this finale tribute illusion. It is a special blessing.

Now is the Time to Plan a Vacation to Branson

A paraphrase of the title of a recent article entitled, “Travel Experts Say Now is the Time to Plan a Vacation,” published on the KSMU Ozarks Public Radio website could be “Now is the Time to Plan a Vacation to Branson.” The article points out that despite the challenging economic times people are still planning on traveling and taking a vacation this summer.

It indicated that now was a good time to plan a vacation because, although there are deals still available, demand is ahead of last year and prices, particularly for gas and air fares are on the rise. The article’s initial emphasis was aimed at travel in general turned to travel in Missouri and, specifically Branson, with the statement, “Travel right here in Missouri also appears to be increasing after a tourism lull last year in places like Branson.”

The Branson Lakes/Lakes Area Convention and Visitors Bureau has been stating for months that their research indicated that in spite of the economic conditions, people would still take vacations in 2009. They may not travel as far, stay as long, or spend as much money, but they would still take vacations. The CVB modified the 2009 marketing plan for Branson to accommodate the recommendations contained in the research.

The article reports that Lynn Berry, Director of Public Relations for the Branson Convention and Visitors Bureau, said that current estimates show that the demand for rooms in Branson was up 20 percent and the number of visitors visiting Branson was up 14 percent. On the morning of May 21 Berry stated that those figures were for the first quarter.

Berry continued saying that she is optimistic that tourism will continue to rise in Branson because families can always find something to do whether they have a lot of money to spend or not. She said several shows and attractions in Branson are offering cheaper deals to continue to bring more people back to Branson.

Paul Miller, General Manager Branson Tourism Center, one of Branson’s largest and most respected providers of Branson services said early planning and booking offers travelers the best opportunity to take advantage of the deals that are available. He pointed out, deals aside, early planning and booking also provides travelers with the best selection of prices, accommodations, and seat selection. Miller expressed his opinion, based on the activity he has seen, that the number of visitors to Branson is up not only totally, but on a month to month basis.

Great granddaughter of Titanic survivor has Titanic wedding

Branson Titanic’s Grand Staircase with the
ships First Class Maid Jaynee Vanderburg.

At 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912, as the mighty unsinkable RMS Titanic slipped to her watery grave in the north Atlantic, the lives of those passengers who survived were forever altered. As passengers board Branson’s “Titanic-Worlds Largest Museum Attraction” they are handed a “boarding pass” for one of the Titanic’s passengers. As they tour the museum they will find out whether or not “they” lived or died that night.

Those receiving the boarding pass of “Mr David Vartanian” might be interested in a column entitled “From the Titanic, a new life together emerges” written by Jim Stingl and posted on line recently by the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel. The column reports that Melissa Vartanian, the great granddaughter of Titanic survivor David Vartanian, and her fiancé, Vache Mikaelian, were to be married on May 13 at the Milwaukee Public Museum’s “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition.”

The column goes on to say that when asked if she thought getting married around the artifacts from the disaster could be, as Vartanian herself put it, “A bad omen” she said, " Yes. I mean, the thing sank and more than 1,500 people died. It was a tragedy, an absolute tragedy that happened. The difference for my family is that it was ultimately about hope and freedom.” She continued, “For my family, it brought life.”

Evidently, marriage in connection with the Titanic does not seem to be “A bad Omen” for too many people. Mary Kellogg Joslyn, the co-owner of Branson’s Titanic with her husband John Joslyn, said that over 1,900 wedding vows have been renewed and about 90 weddings have been performed aboard Branson’s Titanic since it opened in April of 2006. She said that the vast majority of the ceremonies have been performed on the ships elegant Grand Staircase which, according to Wikipedia, was built using the ship’s original deck plans. Joslyn also indicated that none of the ceremonies have directly involved relatives of any of the Titanic’s passengers.

Ozark Mountains come from the sea and top down

As the White River resumes its flow through
Table Rock Dam, a snap shot of how the Ozark
Mountains were formed is revealed.

Although Branson has almost a hundred shows nothing is as impressive as the natural beauty of the Ozark Mountains and its lakes yet, in a paraphrase of the age old question, “What came first, the chicken or the egg” one could ask “What came first in Branson, the sea, mountains or the lakes? Confused, some might ask, “What sea?”

As one looks at the beauty of the Ozark Mountains today it is hard to imagine just where a “sea” fits into Branson’s history. What should be understood however is that over a billion years before there was a Branson or Ozark Mountains, the “Ozarks Plateau,” began its formation. It is that formation from which the Ozark Mountains have been formed.

The result of that formation is a major elevation between the Rocky Mountains to the west and the Appalachian Mountains to the east. In non-geological terms a lot that elevation took place under a vast inland sea. Over a period of millions of years lava flows, a series of upliftings, and the deposit of layers of sediment etc. built the plateau. As the inland seas receded the plateau looked more like a “big block” than the Ozark Mountains of today.

The vast majority of the mountains that most people think of, such as the Rocky Mountains, were formed from the “bottom up” reaching their final height and appearance primarily through dramatic volcanic activity. The Ozark Mountains, on the other hand were, and are still in the process of being, formed from the “top down” by water, wind erosion time, and nature.

Picture a block of granite three feet square waiting to be carved into a beautiful “Bald Eagle.” How the final sculpture looks is up to the sculptor, but from its base level, it will never be higher than three feet. It could be a lot lower than three feet, but not higher. The Master Sculptor has been sculpting on the Ozark Plateau for millions of years with the result being the Ozarks Mountains and the inherent natural beauty that millions of visitors come to Branson and the Ozarks to enjoy every year.

Evidence of the way the Ozarks was and is being formed, from the “top down,” can be seen in layers revealed in the “cuts” left by construction of roads, dams, etc. and in the valleys and bluffs carved out by the rivers of the Ozarks. The picture of the cut at Table Rock Dam is an example. It illustrates how the White River has sculpted the area around it from the top down.

The White River serves as a primary source for Branson’s Tri-Lakes, Lake Taneycomo, Bull Shoals Lake, and Table Rock Lake, all of which are made lakes. Underneath those lakes and the rivers serving as their source the history of the formation of the Ozark Mountains is still being written.

Emerson and Hedgpeth win $10k Table Rock Skeeter Tour

e
Randy Emerson (left) and Ron Hedgpeth with
two bass from their 5 bass limit.

In some tournaments it is a matter of hundredths of an ounce that separates first from second place, but not in the second stop of the “2009 Missouri Skeeter Tour” hosted by the Central Pro-Am Association (CPAA) held May 9 on Table Rock Lake. With a total of 72 teams competing, the local team of Randy Emerson and Ron Hedgpeth won 1st place and $10,000.00 by over 4.5 pounds over their closest competitors with an impressive five fish limit weighing 23.83 pounds. They said they caught their bass on the White River and were fishing jigs in the brush.

Second place went to the team of Bryan Herndon and Larry Herndon who won $1,365.00 with a five fish limit weighing 19.10 pounds. The rest of the five top finishers were: 3rd place Terry Thomas and Bob Cobb, $820.00 for a five fish limit weighing 18.93 pounds; 4th place Greg Ryan and Brad Johnston, $740 for a five fish limit weighing 16.58 pounds and 5th place Larry Wilcox and Darren Plank, $605.00 for a five fish limit weighing 16.55 pounds.

The $910.00 for 1st place in the “Big Bass” competition with a bass weighing 7.11 pounds was the team of Randy Emerson and Ron Hedgpeth. The team of John Goodman and Tory Iverson took 2nd place in the Big Bass Competition with a bass weighing 4.97 pounds.

As the fishermen weighed in, Master of Ceremonies Korey Mitchell asked many of them if the fish were still on the beds. Interestingly, there was a split with some of them saying they were and some saying they were not. Jim Thompson, the Branson owner of CPAA, explained that the difference could relate to whether or not they were fishing Table Rock Lakes rivers or in the main lake because fish could be in different stages of the spawn in each.

The third and last stop on the 2009 Skeeter Tour will be for a guaranteed $10,000.00 1st place on Truman Lake on July 26, 2009.

Accessibility is a unique Branson show tradition

This year, Branson, Missouri is celebrating 50 years of live music shows. Millions of people visit Branson every year to experience its fun, excitement, and entertainment and, to a large number of those people, part of that experience is going to one of Branson’s many shows. In terms of the numbers, variety, and quality of its shows Branson is perhaps unmatched by any other destination city and is often referred to as “the live music show capital of the world.”

Dan Lennon, Vice President Marketing & Public Relations, Branson Convention and Visitors Bureau said that about 80 percent of the millions of people who come to Branson each year go to one or more of its shows. He notes that shows are a “Huge activity for Branson visitors.”

In terms of why Branson’s shows are so popular with visitors Lennon suggested one characteristic that, in terms of the majority of its shows, is unique to Branson, the accessibility of its entertainers. He feels that accessibility helps develop an “up close and personal relationship” between Branson’s entertainers and their audiences that brings visitors back to Branson and its shows again and again.

Branson history indicates that “up close and personal” has been a foundational part of its show tradition ever since Branson’s first two shows, the “Baldknobbers Jamboree” and “Presleys’ Country Jubilee,” started entertaining audiences’ decades ago. Steve Presley, Presleys’ Country Jubilee said, “First and foremost it is a way to connect with the people that come to our shows.” He said it is all a part of developing a relationship with their guests and giving them a positive memorable entertainment experience. Presley expressed his opinion that the guest getting the opportunity to meet, shake hands, get an autograph or picture taken with the entertainer is a big part of that experience.

Jim Barber, Hamner Barber Variety Show, said their show is quite intimate, in that it is designed to engage the audience in a very personal way throughout the production. He continued, “We’re not just performing an act to a darkened auditorium, we’re sharing who we are as individuals. Meeting our guests personally after the show completes that interaction allowing us to get to know them as well. It may only be for a few, brief minutes, but in that time we have made many sincere friendships that have continued for years.”

James Garrett, the star of “A Tribute to John Denver” pointed out that the opportunity to meet and interact with the guests after his show not only enhances their show experience, but gives him a chance to thank them for attending his show. He said, “They are the reason why Branson is one of America’s premier vacation destinations” and “We as entertainers should never forget that.”

Melody Byrd, Group Sales & Marketing Manager, Legends in Concert, said, “It is all about our customer” and developing a one on one relationship with them. She said, “We have a passion for making sure our customer has a great entertainment experience and that includes autographs, pictures, and conversation with ‘our stars.’ She continued, “They love visiting with the customers and the customers love it too! It is the ‘Branson’ way.”

Branson’s Compton Ridge Annual Fiddle Convention Adds New Features

The Bob Walsh Memorial Fiddle Convention will be held May 14 through 17 at Branson’s Compton Ridge Campground, says campground owner Robert Speight, who bought the campground a year ago.

He said he’s excited about the chance to bring people to the tree-shaded campground to enjoy this annual tradition. Fiddler Bruce Hoffman says they expect more than 100 fiddlers from all over the country to come for the jam sessions that go on all day and into the evening.

The public is invited to stroll the grounds and enjoy the music. It’s free except for a fee for the fish fry on Friday and the pig roast on Saturday.

It’s called a convention because there’s no competition. Just a sharing of a longtime Ozark tradition, said fiddler Wayne Massengale, who plays at Grand Country Music Hall. The event is named for the late Bob Walsh, a renowned fiddler who began the gathering at his Cape Fair home, Massengale said. Walsh also was responsible for getting the fiddle named the Missouri state instrument, he said.

There will be one new event this year. Massengale and Hoffman plan to conduct a “fiddle camp,” Massengale said, “where fiddlers who are starting out can sit down with us, and we’ll show them how we learned to play our songs and back up people.”

Several other professional fiddlers from the music shows are expected to be there. Hoffman said they hope to interest a younger generation to carry on the traditional music and “to see what the Ozarks was made of.”

For more information on Compton Ridge Campground or to make a reservation, visit www.comptonridge.com or call 417-338-2911 or 800-233-8648. The facility has two camping areas, a 25-room lodge and amenities including a conference center, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, a game room and more.

A value added feature of the Silver Dollar City (SDC) experience is its festivals and shows. From its famed “World-Fest” international festival in April to its “Old Time Christmas” in November and December it seems that there is always a festival going on at Silver Dollar City.

SDC has developed a series of themed festivals, each with their own special features and shows. Information received from SDC indicates that 2009 will be the “ “biggest show year ever” and a look at the shows and talent that will be coming to SDC as part of its next festival, the “Bluegrass & BBQ Festival,” running from May 13 to May 31, shows why.

Nine time IBMA female vocalist of the year
Rhonda Vincent.

The “Bluegrass & BBQ Festival” alone will feature 30 of the finest bluegrass acts in America. Along with about 27 other bluegrass acts, the shows scheduled to appear at SDC for the festival include nine-time IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year and 2009 SPBGMA Entertainer of the Year, Rhonda Vincent, two-time IBMA Entertainers of the Year and 2009 SPBGMA Instrumental Group and Album of the Year award winners, The Grascals and 2008 IBMA Entertainer of the Year and winner of the 2009 SPBGMA Bluegrass Band and Song of the Year Dailey & Vincent.

Of course BBQ will be featured prominently. SDC’s “House of BBQ will feature all types of BBQ from the Carolina vinegars to the Memphis dry rubs and Texas smoke style, with smoked chicken and St. Louis Ribs to Texas brisket and sweet roasted corn on the cob all coming direct from large outdoor charcoal grills and a custom-made 9-foot smoker. Hundreds of sauces from sweet hickory to Carolina vinegar and honey habanero to smoky chipotle will be available to sample.

New for the 2009 festival, on Friday and Saturday evenings, will be an all-you-can-eat BBQ dinner featuring four flavors of ribs an 18 hour smoked brisket and traditional BBQ sides. In addition SDC’s Culinary and Cart School will also have an emphasis on BBQ during the festival.

With all the festivals SDC has and the quality of its shows, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that SDC is an award winning theme park. It has won the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, “Applause Award” an honor it shares with the likes of Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida and the “Thea Classic Award,” recognizing worldwide excellence and outstanding achievement in themed entertainment from the Themed Entertainment Association.

On any given day during the season, Silver Dollar City offers over 30 entertaining and exciting rides and attractions. Whether it’s the G force acceleration of the Giant Swing” through the barn doors, a leisurely adventure ride on the “Frisco Silver Dollar Line Steam Train,” or being launched up to speeds of 53 mph in 2.8 seconds on “Powder Keg,” or an Ozarks based adventure on the “Fire in the Hole” indoor roller coaster, just to mention a few, SDC has rides, excitement and adventure for all ages.

In addition SDC’s 1880’s themed environment has 60 unique craft shops and an assortment of craftsmen demonstrating crafts such as glass blowing, tole painting, carving, candy making, blacksmithing, and a steam powered duplicating lathe just to mention a few. SDC has over 12 restaurants serving a variety of food at reasonable prices.

Silver Dollar City, without anything else is a world class theme park and a good value. When the world class entertainment features associated with most of its festivals and its location in the beautiful Ozarks hills are factored in with the fact that it is in “Branson,” providing access to its entertainment, shows, shopping, lakes, and excitement, the uniqueness and value of Silver Dollar City as a total entertainment experience is obvious.

“Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love” and “Our Sinatra” celebrates two of the greatest

Vocal cast of "Our Frank," Gavin Reign, Heather
Petersen, and Brian Long. (Left to right)

Two of America’s most honored singers are represented in Branson’s two newest shows “Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love” and “Our Sinatra.” The shows are presented by the “American Songbook Dinner Theatre” at the Shake It Up Show Club located at 625 State Highway 165 just north of the “Acrobats of China Theatre.

Both are musical tribute shows to the artists they are celebrating, Elvis Presley in “Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love” and Frank Sinatra in “Our Sinatra.” Although they are two different shows, their format and style is very similar. Both have an excellent live band, a very talented three person cast, the same producer, Jack Lewin, cover dozens of the songs sung by the respective artist the show is paying tribute to, and finish with a “really big” medley of the artists songs.

“Our Sinatra” is a musical celebration of the music of Frank Sinatra. The vocal cast of Brian Long, Heather Petersen, and Gavin Reign do an excellent job of presenting dozens of “Ol Blue Eyes” hits. The live band, directed by its pianist Gary Freeman and consisting of Ryan Hurn on Drums, and Jacob Danks as Bassist added just the right touch of elegance to the enjoyment of the performance.

"Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love" cast: Tony Tuner,
Jason Yaeger, and Heather Gentry. (left ti right)

“Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love” is a musical tribute to Elvis Presley and like “Our Sinatra” presents dozens of Elvis Presley songs during the show. Singers Heather Gentry, Toney Turner, and Jason Yeager do a superb job of presenting the different styles of Elvis’s music. During his rendition of “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” Yeager adds a narrative that surely has “The King” laughing. The band of Robert "Bogie" Bohinc on Guitar, Ryan Hurn on Drums, Paul Purtle on Electronic Bass, and Brent Vaughan on Saxophone did an excellent job.

Currently “Our Sinatra” is performing on Wednesdays through Sunday with dinner at 4:30 p.m. and the show starting at 5:00 p.m. “Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love” performs Wednesdays through Sunday with dinner at 7:00 p.m. and the show starting at 7:30 p.m

Elfrink catches state record Yellow Perch

Submitted to multiple Sources by Phill Lilley, Ozark Anglers

Vince Elfrink with his Missouri State record
Yellow Perch.

Vince Elfrink of Branson has a new personal best. And it just so happens it’s a Missouri best, too!

Elfrink, fieldhouse supervisor at College of the Ozarks, loves to fish — and hunt– for that matter. A native of southeast Missouri, he came to the tri-lakes area in the late 1970s to attend College of the Ozarks and there he has stayed and made the lakes area home with his wife, JoBeth, and their three children, Joel, Micah and Luke. Despite his faithfulness to his job and his family, Elfrink takes advantage of every opportunity to either be in the field or on the water.

Three years ago he furthered his love for fishing and bought a bass boat and acquired his OUVP Coast Guard License and now moonlights as a part-time fishing guide.

This past Sunday, he left church and headed straight to the bank on upper Bull Shoals. He was in search of the white bass and walleye that have been running the last few weeks. Armed with spinning rod, swimming minnows and his hand-tied buck tail jigs, he sprawled down the mud bank to the water to start his "restful" afternoon of fishing. It turned into a bit of a circus though.

Hooking and landing a few decent white bass on his quarter-ounce white buck tail jig, he hooked another one – or so he thought. This fish fought about the same, but when it broke the water’s surface, it had a different shape and color. It was a yellow perch.

Yellow perch are not native to this part of the country. They normally are found farther north and are found primarily in the Great Lakes. But somehow they’ve found their way into Bull Shoals, much to the chagrin of the Missouri Department of Conservation. In another words, they were not stocked by MDC officials but rather by a third party — without permission. But they’ve flourished and are now listed as an official game fish, at least on the record books.

This yellow perch was a nice one. Elfrink knew he had something special. He made a call and found out the current state record was one pound, seven ounces. He thought his perch was bigger — and he was right.

He contacted the local MDC agent, Buck Nofsinger who asked him to bring the fish up to the local Country Mart in Forsyth to be officially weighed and verified. He weighed in at a whopping 1 pound, 11 ounces, several ounces bigger than the record.

Vince Elfrink is now the Missouri state record holder for a yellow perch. The fish was picked up by officials from Bass Pro Shops. They will hold the perch in quarantine for 30 days and if it lives, it will be placed in their tank at Bass Pro on the Branson Landing.

Plumb Nellie Days enhances Branson tourism

Although Branson tourism thrives on its live shows, from Silver Dollar City to historic downtown Branson and Branson Landing, unique festivals and special events enhance that tourism. The 36th Annual Plumb Nellie Days being held in historic downtown Branson May 15-17 is one of those events.

Plumb Nellie Days, organized by the Downtown Branson Main Street Association (DBMA) is a springtime tradition featuring arts and crafts, sidewalk sales, live music, entertainment, the Outrageous Dog Show, a book signing, and other family fun.

DBMA Events Coordinator Paula Gillispie says more than 100 booths have been reserved by crafters, artists, and food vendors. She pointed out that the event will be held in the one block area north of Main Street on Commercial Street and that Commercial Street will be closed to traffic between Main and Pacific Streets during the event.

All the events except the Outrageous Dog Show, which requires a $5.00 registration fee, are free. On Friday, May 15-16, the arts and crafts festival will be open during the hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m and on Sunday, May 17 it will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In conjunction with Plumb Nellie Days some downtown merchants will also be holding sidewalk sales.

Judy Dees, who owns “Mr. B’s Ice Cream Parlor” at the corner of Veterans Boulevard and Main Street, with her husband, Randy, has recently published a book entitled, “Verses from Above.” Dees will be holding a book signing during the event.

The Outrageous Dog Show, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday and the show at 10 a.m., has become one of the most popular activities of Plumb Nellie Days. Although it costs $5.00 to enter, it is a fun event during which every dog wins a prize based on the judging of fun divisions such as the ugliest dog, cutest puppy, most spots, longest ears etc. In addition, the Taney County Animal Shelter, in conjunction with Plumb Nellie Days, will be offering the adoption of dogs and cats from the shelter.

Gillispie said, “Volunteers are very much a part of Plumb Nellie Days” and that anyone wanting to volunteer to help with the event should call her. For information about the event or to volunteer call 417-334-1548.

Annual cleanup removes 14 tons of trash from Table Rock Lake shoreline

Tourists, visitors, and locals using Table Rock Lake for recreation will be enjoying a cleaner shore line thanks to the recent efforts of hundreds of volunteers, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and Table Rock Water Quality Inc. (TRLWQ). TRLWQ is a not for profit corporation whose main mission is maintaining and improving the quality of the ground and surface waters of the Table Rock Lake watershed. On April 4, TRLWQ coordinated the Annual Table Rock shoreline cleanup which resulted in the removal of over 14 tons of trash from the lakes shoreline.

David Casaletto, Executive of TRLWQ, had said the 2009 cleanup was named the “Table Rock Marina Association Shoreline Cleanup,” after its major funding sponsor. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Table Rock Lake was a significant contributor in the cleanup effort including the supplying trash bags, dumpsters for the trash collected and other major support for the hundreds of volunteers participating in the cleanup effort.

According to a statement on its web site, www.trlwq.org, 2008’s annual shoreline cleanup was limited because of the record high water levels. Even though lake levels were back down near normal levels the 2008 levels impacted on the cleanup because a lot of the trash had to be dislodged from the trees and brush it was deposited in while the lake level was much higher.

The shoreline trash comes from quite an area. Table Rock Lake itself has over 1,000 miles of shore line and tens of thousands of acres immediately adjacent to it that are used for recreational activities such as fishing, hunting, camping, boating, swimming, biking, and hiking. A lot of the improperly disposed of trash from those activities ends up in Table Rock Lake and eventually on its shoreline. Gopala Borchelt, TRLWQ, pointed out that the 14 tons of trash picked up underscores how important and necessary the shoreline cleanup work is.

Volunteers picked up more than 1,000 bags of trash. TRLWQ reports on the type of items picked up indicate the extent to which people indiscriminately use the lake to dispose of trash in a careless manner. The cleanup picked up everything from an almost of full truck load of beer bottles at one public use area alone, to bug zappers, propane tanks, TVs, small freezers, and 55 gallon drums

Borchelt expressed the organizations thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors for their efforts.

Legends in Concert – a super show of super stars

Celebrity performer Doug Brewin during
performance of Alan Jackson.

Saying the “Legends in Concert Show” is just another tribute show is like saying the “Kentucky Derby” is just another horse race. There are horse races and there is the Kentucky Derby. There are tribute shows and there is “Legends in Concert Show.”

In the typical musical tribute show, the “tribute” comes mostly from the music being played. In the vast majority of cases there is no serious attempt to show or portray the artist as they were when they actually performed the songs. One of the amazing things about the Legends in Concert Show is the recreation of the super star performer by the celebrity impersonators in terms of looks, mannerisms, and sound.

It is about as close as anyone can get to actually seeing these legends perform without seeing the original star. Another neat thing is that each show includes multiple stars that are changed at intervals throughout the season so there is always something new to see and experience.

Tina Turner being performed by
Lori-Mitchell Gay.

Currently appearing are Alan Jackson performed by Doug Brewin, Tina Turner performed by Lori Mitchell-Gay, Rod Stewart performed by Rob Caudill, The Blues Brothers performed by Justin Clark and Bucky Heard and Elvis Presley performed by Dean Z.

The comments of “Drewgal,” who saw the show recently, sums up the majority of the opinions on this show published on the 1Branson.Com Show Forum. Drewgal said, “I can’t say enough good things about this show!! …the show was amazing! …Everyone had a great performance and they were all so friendly afterwards as well. In my opinion, this is a MUST-SEE show if you are in Branson!!”

Each celebrity impersonator performed a set of at least five numbers. Although certainly subjective, the highlight number of each performance would be “Remember When” from the Alan Jackson performance, Deep River” from the Tina Turner’s performance, “Shout” from the Blues Brothers performance, “These Foolish Things” from the Rod Stewart performance and “Don’t Be Cruel” from the Elvis Presley performance.

Although it is the celebrity impersonators doing the tribute that take top billing, it is the seamless addition of the live band and dancers that make the show into a production and the very special entertainment experience that it is. The Legends in Concert Band is composed of Kevin Allen- Guitar-band leader, Mark Owen-keyboard, Lynn Brown- Drums and Brian Zerbe-Bass Guitar. In addition to being great musicians they do a super job of adjusting to the music, style and tempo of each different artist.

The show’s dancers, led by dance captain Stephanie Drey, are Tiffany Powers, Larry Miller, Jamie Cuyearer, Darcie Jones, and Lyra Sprenger. They are involved with the majority of the numbers in the show and their dancing skill and energy, coupled with the shows choreography and costuming are a joy to watch.

The production of the show ties all of its elements and the varying styles of the super stars being impersonated into a unique entertainment experience that stands out even in Branson, “The live music show capital of the world.”

Paul Miller, General Manager, Branson Tourism Center, reminds visitors the Legends in Concert Show has changed theatres this season. They have moved from their old theatre near the junction of State Highways 165 and 76 across from the Titanic to the Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theater directly across the street from Dixie Stampede. He also points out that in addition to the access from State Highway 76 there is also convenient access available from Fall Creek Road.

Branson welcoming signs one step closer

Currently, Branson bound tourists and visitors traveling north and south on U.S. Highway 65 see the standard highway signs telling them they are in Branson and announcing the exits. The exits themselves although mowed and maintained are nondescript. Thanks to Branson’s Community Pride Committee (Committee) all that is about to change.

The Committee was established some months ago to, among other things, work on ways to beautify Branson. One of the first areas of emphasis was the approaches to the city of Branson from the north and south. At its April 28 meeting, the Committee reviewed designs for the new signs that will be used to welcome visitors to Branson and let those traveling up and down U.S. Highway 65 know that they are traveling through Branson.

In a recent change, the Missouri Department of Transportation will permit the city signs on their property which allows a lot more flexibility in their placement. According to Jerry Adams, a member of the Committee, and the city’s director of public relations, the next step in the process is to obtain the approval of the Branson Board of Aldermen and the Branson Lakes/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce of one of the designs to be used for the eight (8) by six (6) foot signs.

Concurrent with the signs the Committee is continuing its discussion on putting flower beds at off and on ramps at U.S. Highway 65 and State Highway 76. Adams indicated that both the new signs and the flower beds will be helpful additions in welcoming tourists and visitors to Branson.

Fight Cancer – Eat lots of food!

Eating lots of food is probably not a good idea all the time, but, in terms of fighting cancer, it can be an excellent idea if it is done at Chili’s Restaurant, 1150 Branson Hills Parkway on Tuesday May 5th between 4:00 p.m. and closing. Chili’s is teaming up with the Branson Tourism Center Relay for Life Teams to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Chili’s Restaurant will donate ten percent (10%) of the “dining checks” generated between 4:00 p.m. and closing on May 5th to the “Relay for Life of Taney and Stone Counties.” To be eligible for the donation the dining check must be accompanied by a copy of the “Let’s Get Together” flyer that is available in the Branson Tourism Center lobby at 220 Branson Hills Parkway, the checkout lanes of Branson 1st Stop convenience store and gas station at that same address, the Branson Daily Independent at 704 Veterans Blvd or on line at http://www.bransontourismcenter.com/Chilis_relay_for_life.pdf.

According to the American Cancer Society, one out of every three Americans will be diagnosed with Cancer during their lifetime. “Relay For Life” is an American Cancer Society grassroots program designed to empower groups and individuals to participate in the fight against this formidable foe. The program “represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.”

To do that, each “Relay For Life” teams raises money that will be used for cancer research, patient services and early detection and prevention education. Branson Tourism Center has three Relay For Life teams that have been involved with various fund raising efforts throughout the year such as the Chili’s event, an Ester egg hunt, and various in-house fund raising efforts.

The signature activity of Relay For Life is an annual overnight event celebrating “the lives of those who have battled cancer, remembering loved ones lost, and fighting back against a disease that takes too much.” It involves more than 3.5 million people from 4,900 communities across the country. They camp out overnight at local school tracks or other areas as team members take turns walking or running around the track with at least one member of the team on the track at all times during the event. The annual Relay For Life overnight event for Taney and Stone counties will take place on Friday night, June 5 at the Cedar Ridge Track.

DWI a Branson experience no one wants

One thing no visitor to Branson wants to add to their Branson experience is a stop and arrest for driving while under the influence of either alcohol or drugs (DWI). The message is clear to both local residents and visitors alike driving in the Branson area, “Don’t drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

In separate press releases, both the City of Branson and the City of Hollister pointed out that they will be joining with law enforcement officers from all over Missouri in an intensified effort to catch, arrest, and punish those driving on Missouri’s roads and highways while under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the period May 1-3. Hollister’s Police Chief Preston Schmidt and Branson’s Assistant Police Chief Steve Dalton said that it is never worth the risk to drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and that to do so could cause drivers to lose their license, pay large fines, go to jail, or worst of all, cause a tragic loss of life.

Although Missouri’s driving while under the influence laws are enforced on a daily basis by local law enforcement officers the “crackdown” on May 1-3 is intended to focus the public’s awareness on the DWI problem in an effort to make Missouri’s roads and highways safer. Both Dalton and Schmidt emphasized that in 2007, 243 people died in more than 7,780 alcohol-related traffic crashes, resulting in a death or injury every 1.7 hours.

Branson’s Musical History: The Baldknobbers

The Baldknobbers Jamboree in Branson, Missouri, is really a history of music in Branson and the Ozarks. While the band doesn’t have washtubs or a jawbone anymore, the country music show that audiences enjoy each night adheres faithfully to the very beginnings of music in Branson and The Baldknobbers, Branson’s first show.

It was 1959 when four Mabe brothers started entertaining Branson visitors on Taneycomo’s lakefront. Most of the visitors had come for the fishing, and The Baldknobbers Jamboree was good family entertainment for the evening. Today in Branson the Baldknobbers still give fans the best in country classics, "hot" new country, Gospel tunes…and comedy.

Second- and third-generations of Mabes and a cast of 19 singers, musicians and comedians give enthusiastic audiences a high-energy, fast-paced show. "I believe our best quality is that we entertain everyone from the age of 2 to 92," says Tim Mabe, producer and comedian Droopy Drawers Jr. Indeed, kids and grandparents alike enjoy the variety of country music and laugh out loud at the antics and tales the comedians weave into the show.

The Baldknobbers took their name from the Ozarks vigilante group that met on the bald tops, or knobs, of mountains in the area in the late 1800’s. In the early days of their music, The Baldknobbers played during the intermission square dance the very first year of the Shepherd of the Hills outdoor drama, a story about that vigilante era in Branson.

At the Baldknobbers first shows, the instruments actually did include a washtub bass, washtub for rhythm, the jawbone of a mule instead of drums, as well as a dobro or flat-top guitar, and an acoustic guitar. Second-generation Brent Mabe, who plays guitar and bass in the show, remembers early days on the lakefront when he and his cousin Tim Mabe would earn 50 cents putting bumper stickers on cars and for a free Coke would do some cleanup. He says fans have told him, "I remember you playing ball in the parking lot, with a crushed-up soda cup."

It was 1968 when the Baldknobbers built their 1500-seat theater out on Highway 76 and Brent Mabe still remembers the "huge, empty building." It meant quitting day jobs and was a major decision for the group. But it was quite an improvement from 50 folding chairs in the theater on the lakefront.

Today, Tim Mabe is the producer of the show, but as Tim explains, "We don’t have a star, the show is our star and all 19 of us put our mark on this show. Many of the talented musicians and singers have been with the Baldknobbers for many years so our show is collaborative." About the 2009 show Tim says, "In addition to a fantastic show, we will have events all year long to mark this milestone in Branson’s entertainment history."

In 1959 The Baldknobbers sometimes performed for a crowd of just a dozen people. Today The Baldknobbers Jamboree is often a sellout, and entertainers give the same energy and enthusiasm and personal attention to their audiences as they did on the lakefront.

In 1959 The Baldknobbers Jamboree was the only show Branson. Today Branson is known as the Live Music Show Capital of the World, boasting more theater seats than Broadway. But some things never change. There’s still great fishing. And even more great music. Come help celebrate 50 years of entertainment in Branson, with The Baldknobbers Jamboree!

The Baldknobbers Jamboree Show-"The Show That Started It All"-is located on the famed 76 Country Music Boulevard in Branson, Missouri, with performances Monday through Saturday at 8:00 p.m..

The Twelve Irish Tenors – A special Branson entertainment experience

“The most beautiful music of all is the music of what happens,” is an old Irish proverb. Having heard “The Twelve Irish Tenors” sing recently it gives one pause to wonder if the writer of the proverb would object too much if the words “when the twelve Irish tenors sing” were added to the end of the proverb.

Branson, Missouri the “live music show capital of the world,” has music shows of just about every type, but even in Branson, this show stands out. Although they dance a “jig” or two and there is a little humor, “what happens” in this show is the presentation of some of the most beautiful, powerful and inspirational musical vocals one is likely to hear not only in Branson but anywhere.

“What happens” with the first notes of their first number, “Danny Boy,” is that the audience realizes they are in for a special entertainment experience. From that number to their last, the sheer beauty, power and harmony of their singing entertains, inspires and amazes.

The “Twelve Irish Tenors” must all have Irish heritage and over half of them are actually from Ireland. Arguably, each of the twelve could be successful as a soloist in their own right, but what is inarguable is “what happens” when their voices are combined.

The show covers Irish favorites such as “Danny Boy,” “Cockles and Mussels,” “Sweet Rosie O’ Grady” and “Irish Eyes Are Smiling,” some of the most inspirational songs ever written such as “You Raised Me Up,” “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” and “I Believe, ” as well as “Funiculi Funicula,” “O Solo Mio,” “Nessum Dorma,” “Unchained Melody,” “Bridge Over Troubled Waters, a Glenn Miller Medley and many more. And, although the range and variety of the music covered is impressive, even more so is manner in which they are presented.

The Neapolitan song “O Solo Mio,” was written in 1898 and has been performed by many artists in that language over the years. Elvis Presley did a version of the song in English entitled “It’s Now or Never.” The shows presentation of this classic, featuring Jonathon Fisk Hill is a unique powerful performance that is a show highlight.
The very next number, “Toreador” featuring a unique duet by Brian Walker and Seph Stanek was another highlight followed by a powerful and beautiful performance of “You Raise Me Up” featuring Brian Walker on the fiddle and Ron Remeke on the vocal which was yet another show highlight and therein lies the strength, power and beauty of this show.

From the beginning to the end it is one amazing performance after another covering just about every music genre. It makes no difference if the song is an Irish folksong like “Phil the Flutter’s Ball,” an old favorite such as “Unchained Melody,” the aria “Nessun Dorma,” or a song that was recorded by the Beatles on their first album, “Twist and Shout.”

Although it has been said previously, the strong powerful voices of the Twelve Irish Tenors coupled with the unique and varied way in which each number is performed makes it worth repeating. This show has “some of the most beautiful, powerful and inspirational musical vocals one is likely to hear not only in Branson, but anywhere.”

“The Twelve Irish Tenors” are currently appearing at the Branson Variety Theatre. To purchase tickets for this show or to get more information on this show or any other Branson show, attraction, or accommodation please contact the Branson Tourism Center by phone at 1-800-785-1550 or on line by clicking here

Comedy is in Branson show genes

Branson Russian comedian Yakov Smirnoff

In 2009 Branson is celebrating 50 years of live music shows. An earlier article entitled “Live music shows are Branson’s entertainment heart” asked the question “Who could have known back in 1959 that when the Mabe family started performing their country music variety show called the “Baldknobbers Jamboree,” in a small 50 seat basement room in the Branson Community Center, the show would still be going 50 years later?”

The article went on to state, “If, in 1959, someone had said, ‘50 years from now people will be coming from all over the world to see live music shows in Branson’ they would have been laughed at. Well, no one’s laughing now.” In retrospect, that last statement is wrong because lots of people are laughing in Branson shows today and for the same reason they were laughing in 1959, great comedy.

The two shows that pioneered what has become the “Live music show capital of the world,” Branson’s first show the “Baldknobbers Jamboree” and its first show on the strip, “Presleys’ Country Jubilee” were, from their very beginnings, based on a simple format containing two major elements, music and comedy. Comedy was part of the original foundation upon which two of Branson’s longest running shows were built and is no less important to those shows today than it was then.

In fact, it appears comedy is a consideration for a lot of people when they are making decisions about which Branson show to see. Paul Miller, General Manager, Branson Tourism Center, who sells more theatre seats to more shows than any other business in Branson, said that when people are deciding what shows to see, in a lot of cases, comedy is a major factor in making the decision

The good news is that, as it has been from the very beginning, good clean family comedy is still an important major element in Branson shows. It is not only available, but it is available in a lot of varied formats and venues.

Although the type of comedy changes from show to show, the original “Baldknobber” “Presleys’” variety format of having a strong musical element blended with great comedy designed to hold the interest of adults and kids alike is as popular today as it was 50 years ago. From a familial perspective, the original Ozark comedy and characters such as “Herikmer” and “Cecil” at “Presleys’ Country Jubilee” or Droopy Drawers, Jr. at the “Baldknobbers Jamboree” provide one type of comedy using that format and comedian Jim Stafford yet another type using the same format.

Perhaps not as well known as those mentioned above but providing major comedy elements as part of a musical variety show, each with their own different comedic style, would be comedians such as Joey Riley, appearing in the “Mickey Gilley Show,” Jarrett Dougherty with the “Pierce Arrow Show” and Perry Edenburn with the “Branson Brothers Show.” The comedy of ventriloquist comedians such as Todd Oliver with the “Show Stoppers” on the Show Boat Branson Belle and Jim Barber of the “Hamner Barber Variety Show” provide yet another source of laughter for Branson show goers.

When one considers the unique comedy of Yakov Smirnoff, Tom Mullica’s Red Skelton Tribute or shows like the “Comedy Jamboree,” “Circle B Chuckwagon,” “Grand Jubilee,” “Branson Country USA,” “Bob Nelson,” and “Paul Harris Live” to mention just a few, it is hard to imagine a destination city that has more live shows with opportunities for family laughter and fun than in Branson. Laughter and comedy have been a part of the Branson’s show genes every since the beginning and will remain an important part of the entertainment experience that makes Branson so special.

Branson Landing not impacted by GGP Bankruptcy

The operation of Branson’s largest shopping attraction, Branson Landing, will not be effected by what is being described as one of the largest commercial real estate failures in history. General Growth Properties Inc. (NYSE: GGP), one of the largest shopping mall owners in the country, filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy code earlier this week. Although GGP owns three shopping malls in Missouri, Branson Landing is not one of them.

In a July 2008 press release, HCW Development Company, LLC (HCW) announced that it had contracted with GGP for the leasing, management, and marketing services for Branson Landing to become effective August 1 of that year. The press release contained no mention of a legal entity called General Growth Management Inc. (GGMI.)

In a “Media Alert,” published by GGP on April 16 relative to its bankruptcy filing, GGP said, “Branson Landing in Branson, Mo. is managed by General Growth Management Inc. and is not owned by GGP. GGMI did not file for Chapter 11 protection, meaning that operations at the shopping center are not impacted by GGP’s filing.”

It went on to state, “GGMI third party management responsibilities continue uninterrupted at Branson Landing. Branson Landing, like GGP owned malls elsewhere in Missouri, will remain open with the same great shopping and entertainment that customers have come to expect.” The media alert contained no additional information about GGMI or its relationship to either GGP or Branson Landing.

Historic downtown Branson celebrates “Plumb Nellie Days”

Branson’s Ozark Mountain Spring Festival covers over 40 different events. Some of those events such as “Branson’s Great American Pie Show,” sponsored by the Branson Lakes Area CVB and the “Hand-in-Hand Branson Honors Purple Heart Recipients,” sponsored by Branson.Com are new events. Others like Historic Downtown Branson’s “Plumb Nellie Days,” being celebrated May 15-17, are an ingrained part of Branson’s history and heritage.

This year’s celebration is the 36th Annual Plumb Nellie Days, a traditional springtime event organized by the the Downtown Branson Main Street Association (DBMA). Prior to leaving her position as DBMA’s Executive Director recently, Dawn Erickson said, “When I was growing up in Branson, we looked forward to this festival all year long. We dressed up in pioneer costumes, the men had beard-growing contests, and the kids competed in greased pig and other old-fashioned competitions, and everyone came to watch the parade. A carnival was set up near the railroad tracks, and cakewalks and other games were held on Commercial Street.

“I’ve always heard that the name is derived from an old-fashioned surveyor’s term “plumb” which means exactly, and ‘nellie’ is a colloquial expression for ‘nearly.” We think the word spring was also part of the original name. So Plumb Nellie probably means ‘exactly nearly spring.’ It makes no sense, but it’s such a fun name for a springtime festival.”

Information received from DBMA indicates there will be over 100 artists, crafters and food vendors. Most of the craft booths will be under tents that will be located in the Awbery parking lot at Commercial and Pacific Streets in historic downtown Branson, just behind Dick’s Old-Fashioned 5 & 10. The Plumb Nellie Days location is easy to fine, just go to the center of Historic Downtown Branson, the corner of Main and Commercial Street, turn north and “You can’t miss it.” Commercial Street is closed to traffic for one block, from Main Street north to Atlantic for the event.

The arts and crafts festival will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, May 15-16, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 17. There is no charge for admission and all the arts and crafts and entertainment are free. Live music, including blue grass, gospel, and rock and roll, will be presented by “Elvis,” Bob Mabe, The American Kids, Red Head Express and others.

“The Outrageous Dog Show,” one of “Plumb Nellie Days” most popular events, will take place on Saturday, May 16 with registration starting at 9 a.m. This is a fun event with the dogs competing in categories such as “cutest, ugliest, most spots, look alike, and best dressed.”

For additional information on “Plumb Nellie Days” call the DBMA at 417-334-1548. For information on Branson lodging, shows, attractions or other assistance with Branson travel needs please feel free to contact the Branson Tourism Center at 1-800-785-1550 or online at their web site.

50’s At The Hop rocks to the rock and roll era

Shawn Verhaben and David Sanders
performing Everly Brothers medley.

The “50’s At the Hop Show” shares the music of the 50’s with not only those who lived it and can remember it, but with generations who did not. It was interesting, sitting in the back of the theatre, watching people who obviously related to the rock and roll era kind of “rocking and rolling” in their seats while the show was being performed.

Even more interesting however, was the reaction of some of the younger members of the audience who were two generations removed from the 50’s. Out of six teenagers asked what they thought of the show one said it was “ok,” but the others enthusiastically expressed their enjoyment of the show. When asked what they liked the most they said the music and dancing.

Let there be no doubt about it, this is a straight no glitz music show presented by a small talented vocal cast dedicated to sharing the music of the 50’s with their audience. For just about two hours the cast of Shane Verhaben, David Sanders, Monica Garrett, Mandy Stauffer, Angie S, and Kelly Smith sing and dance through the music of the 50’s rock and roll era, one great number after another, with a vocal quality and energy that is amazing.

The live band is composed of some of Branson’s finest musicians. Band members Norman Bergen, Piano; Bogie Bohinc, Guitar; Mike Carroll, Saxophone; Paul Purtle, Bass Guitar and Jeff Whittington on Drums do a great job of playing in support of and interacting with the singers. They also have a few show highlights of their own such as Carroll’s saxophone rendition of “Harlem Nocturne,” his “Night Train” duet with Bohinc and the band’s “Rock A Billy” number.

The show’s range of music covers the “Bill Haley and the Comets” classic, “We’re Gonna Rock Around the Clock Tonight,” which some believe launched the rock and roll era, to the Roy Orbison songs “Only the Lonely,” “Pretty Woman” and “Crying Over You” of the early 60s. In between is a vast selection of rock and roll hits from artists such as Elvis Presley, The Coasters, The Everly Brothers and the Supremes to name a few.

“Angie S” does a number of solos throughout the show and does an excellent job. Her rendition of “At Last,” a song written in 1941 and recorded by Nat King Cole in 1957 was beautiful. The Everly Brothers medley, including “All I Have to Do Is Dream,” “Bye Bye Love” and “Wake Up Little Suzie,” sung by Shane Verhaben and David Sanders showcased their vocal talents nicely.

“50’s At The Hop” is an entertaining fast paced musical tribute to the rock and roll era music of the 50’s and “rocks” for all ages.

The 50’s At The Hop Theatre is located in the “Shoppes at Branson Meadows” at 4230 N. Gretna Road in Branson.

Resurfacing to cause traffic delays on Highway 265

Branson tourists and locals planning on using State Highway 265, a popular route to and from Branson’s Silver Dollar City and other points west of Silver Dollar City should plan for delays during the week of April 13. According to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), portions of the popular route will be reduced to one lane traffic for periods of time during the week because five miles of Highway 265 will be resurfaced with a new one inch driving surface.

During a telephone interview on April 13, Kevin Durbin, Senor Construction Inspector, MoDOT Region 7, said the actual area to be resurfaced will run from about 200 to 300 feet south of the Highway 265/76 intersection to just north of the traffic signal at the Highway 265/165 intersection near the Chateau on the Lake. He said the project will not include any portion of Highway 265 south of that traffic signal.

Durbin said the project was scheduled to start on April 13 but has been delayed for at least one day because of weather. He anticipates that if the weather permits and they can get started on April 14 that the project will be completed by the weekend. He again stressed that the project is weather dependent.

He explained that the work is scheduled to start at the Highway 265/76 intersection and will work south on Highway 265. As it does, a movable zone, closing one lane of traffic and permitting one-way traffic only, will move with it. MoDOT advises travelers on State Highway 265 traveling north from the traffic signal at the Highway 265/165 intersection to be aware of the work, look for and obey flaggers, drive slowly through the work zone and be prepared to stop.

Jim Stafford Show demonstrates why it’s celebrating 20th year

Jim Stafford performing on stage.

As Branson is celebrating 50 years of live music shows, one of its favorite comedians, Jim Stafford is celebrating his 20th year of performing in Branson and for good reason. Those who say it’s because of his “comedic genius” are only half right.

The other half is his skill at combining that comedic genius with an innate ability to relate and interact with his audience to give them a great personal entertainment experience. Even the preliminary and obligatory “Exit Location” announcement is unique, entertaining, and becomes part of the total “Stafford” entertainment experience.

First and foremost, this is a show by a family for families that will hold the interest of not only adults, but kids. Everyone is on the edge of their seats wondering what Jim is going to come up with next. Whether it’s a “black light presentation” used during his performance of “Spiders and Snakes” and other places during the show, using 3D or getting the audience involved with “cow paddies,” during his presentation of “Cow Patti,” there is a constant feeling of anticipatory excitement.

When the Stafford’s children, Shea and GG perform it is obvious that they have talent and that talent has been choreographed into the show in a manner that enhances the total entertainment experience for the audience. From their opening piano numbers, through each appearance, their talent becomes more and more apparent. Their “Chariots of Fire” duet and its manner of presentation is a show highlight.

The star of the show, its MC and the “grease” that make it all run and transition seamlessly from one segment to another is, of course, Jim Stafford. His comedic and musical talents coupled with his ability to relate them to his audience are apparent from the opening number to the last number. Whether it’s a straight standup comedy routine, a “question and answer” period with the audience, or a discussion of his trials as Shea is learning to drive, the audience, kids as well as adults, are in stitches.

Jim’s musical talents are displayed throughout the show. His renditions of “Shenandoah,” on the harmonica, and “Malaguena,” on the guitar are, but two of many examples. One should remember however, that in the Jim Stafford Show comedy can be but a “note” away.

Adding still more variety to the show, Lauren Heavener does a great job on vocals. Her rendition of “Columbus Stockade Blues” with its yodeling was an audience favorite. The graceful dancing of Zhenya and Sasha, especially during the Jims rendition of “Dark Eyes” on the guitar, is a beautiful thing to see and hear.

From beginning to end this show has it all, great comedy, music, dancing and all the fun anyone could want. It is one of those shows that is just as entertaining for adults as it is for kids. May the sound of “Yippee-i-ay, Cow Patti” resound through Branson for another 20 years.

Downtown Branson Main Street Association Director resigns

The Downtown Branson Main Street Association’s (DBMA) director for the past year has resigned.

Dawn Erickson will become a consultant and volunteer for the organization, according to DBMA President Jeff Justus. Erickson will continue to produce reports for DBMA’s government-related economic development projects, supervise the national marketing program, and assist with upcoming special events such as Plumb Nellie Days and the annual fiddle contest.

“We are sorry to see Dawn leave the organization, but she has assured us that she will remain involved,” said DBMA Chairman Jeff Justus. “She said she plans to return to free-lance communications and economic development projects.”

Responsibilities handled by Erickson will be covered by DBMA’s board members and staff. The director’s position will be left open at this time, Justus said.

“Over the past year, we have done our best to adapt to a changing economy,” Justus said. “Non-profit organizations are going to take a beating in this recession, and we have made significant changes in how we spend a shrinking supply of investment dollars.”

For more than 20 years, DBMA has provided revitalization opportunities for the downtown business community through government grants and programs. It conducts an effective annual national marketing campaign to attract visitors to Historic Downtown Branson. It hosts several tourism-related special events each year, and creates strategic partnerships among government entities, business organizations and private enterprise to achieve the goals of the community. DBMA also provides administrative service for the Community Improvement District which operates a free public trolley service in the historic district.

“By operating DBMA as tightly as we can during these tough times, we will survive for the long haul as an organization,” said Shawn Pingleton, a member of the Board of Directors.

Additional information about DBMA is available by contacting Jeff Justus, 417-334-3107.

Wheel of Fortune Wheelmobile wheels into Branson

What’s about 39 feet long, 13 feet high, bright yellow, and will more than likely bring thousands of people to Branson on Saturday May 9 and Sunday May 10? The answer is the “Wheel of Fortune’s “Wheelmobile.” It will be in Branson at the Welk Resort Theatre between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on May 9 and 10 conducting “the preliminary screening process before the final Wheel of Fortune contestant auditions.”

During each day there will be three “Wheel of Fortune Shows” with participants chosen randomly based on color coded applications each person attending the show will fill out. As the cards are picked, the contestants’ will come up to the stage in groups of five where they will “play the game” by going through a short interview and playing a version of the “Wheel of Fortune Speed-Up Round.” All the contestants will win “Wheel of Fortune” prizes hats, t-shirts, etc.

Of course the prize most will be seeking will be an opportunity to appear on the actual “Wheel of Fortune” television show. The information on the event on the KY3 TV website about the event indicates that no actual contestants will be chosen while the Wheelmobile is in Branson. The Branson event will be used as one of the methods of choosing those who will take part in the final round of auditions.

The Branson area final auditions will take place “within a few months” of the Wheelmobiles final audition date. In addition, the show saves some of the final audition spots for people who did not make it up on stage at the actual Wheelmobile event. The information on the web site says that after all the Wheelmobile events have been conducted they “Will draw a number of names at random from all the applications received in the Branson area for these slots.” Anyone that is invited to the final auditions will receive a letter or email within a few weeks of the last Wheelmobile Event.

At the final auditions, the shows Contestant Coordinators will select the individuals who will actually appear on the show. The Wheel of Fortunes web site indicates that last year out of the million or more people requesting auditions only 600 made it onto the show. Further, the site points out that the people being auditioned and actually selected to be on the show are responsible for any expenses “incurred for accommodations, travel to and from the audition site, and to and from the taping in Los Angeles (or another city.)”

On April 8, a spokesperson for the Welk Resort Theatre said there is no charge to attend the shows and that no preregistration is necessary. Guests will be served on a first come first serve basis.

Branson’s “Broadway” – a spectacular entertainment experience

e
Cast presenting "Grease" segment.

Even as Branson is celebrating 50 years of live music shows, “Broadway, The Star Spangled Celebration” stands out. From beginning to end, this show has the audience enraptured with the beauty of its dancing, vocals, choreography, costume changes, and energy. The lyrics from the Gershwin song “I Got Rhythm,” used to close the first half of the show contain a phrase that pretty well sums up this show as an entertainment experience, “Who could ask for anything more.”

“Broadway, The Star Spangled Celebration (Broadway)” is a kaleidoscope of some of Broadway’s most memorable musicals presented in a dynamic, exciting, varied, and fun filled manner. The flow of the show, from one number to the next, is seamless in spite of the costume changes, numerous styles of dancing, and vocal integration involved. This show is quality spectacular entertainment and fun for children as well as adults.

From their opening vocals, it is obvious that this show has two outstanding lead vocalists in Gene Yaws and Laureen Niamesny. Throughout the show their vocals, as well as the supporting vocals Fran Elkins, Mo, and Victoria, are choreographed with some of the best dancing in Branson into an entertaining and fast paced spectacle of Broadway’s best musicals.

In terms of the entertainment experience Broadway offers, it is the skill and energy of the shows dancers, their costuming, and the choreography that makes it a unique Branson entertainment experience. In a word, the dancers are “superb.” It’s amazing to watch them not only perform different styles of dancing as they transition from a show like “Cabaret” to “Oklahoma” or “Grease,” but to witness the energy, grace, and preciseness with which they do it.

The shows costuming is constantly changing as the cast goes from one Broadway show to another. And it’s not just that it is changing. The costuming is elegant and, like all of the other elements of the show, is seemingly choreographed into the show to add color, excitement and variety to the show.

Part of the shows excitement comes from the fact that the audience just does not know what to expect next. Oh they know it’s going to be a Broadway musical, but what they don’t know is how it will be presented.

What will the costuming be? Will it be a vocal solo or a full ensemble number with both vocals and dancers? The costuming, vocals, and dancing style involved with the shows “Oklahoma” segment is entirely different than those same elements when presented in “Grease,” even though both numbers involve most of the shows cast.

One moment, the show is moving along with a full cast number and then, seamlessly, gracefully, and beautifully, the pace changes. The shows female lead, Laureen Niamesny, is singing “Memory” from the show “Cats” and a duet of dancers is gracefully and elegantly dancing to the music she is singing. Then, in seemingly the twinkling of eye, the whole cast is back on stage and has transitioned into the fast paced colorful “Grease” segment.

The show has been described as, “The greatest Broadway spectacular this side of Times Square.” Based on the energy, scope, costuming, choreography, and level of dancing and vocal skills in the show, that just might be an understatement.

Five free “family friendly” things to do in Branson

Free Discovery Trolley leaves historic downtown
Branson on loop to Branson Landing about every
15 minutes.

In these economic times, families on vacation are looking for ways to stretch their travel dollars farther. An article entitled, “Branson listed third most budget friendly destination in America,” published on line in this publication, indicates the decision to come to Branson for a vacation or getaway is one step in the right direction. But, even in a value destination like Branson, there are free things families can do that will add even more value and stretch their vacation dollars farther.

The following is not meant to be an all inclusive of all the free activities available in Branson. It is however, a list of five different and unique, free, and “family friendly” activities that families can share together while in Branson that can add variety, fun, and memories to their Branson experience.

1. Edwards Mill at College of the Ozarks – This is an actual working grist mill on the campus of the College of the Ozarks and is powered by a twelve foot water wheel driven by water flowing from Lake Honor in the center of the campus. Students working at the mill actually grind flower and meal that is used on the campus and is available for sale at the mill, in the gift shop, and on line.

A weaving studio is located on the upper floor of the mill. Students use traditional floor looms to produce hand woven placemats and coasters that are sold by the College in the gift shop and on line.

2. Shepherd of the Hills Trout Hatchery – The hatchery is operated by the Missouri Department of Conservation and produces both Rainbow and Brown Trout for not only Lake Taneycomo but other state trout fishing facilities. The best way to experience the hatchery is by starting at the Visitors Center located at the foot of Table Rock Dam and reachable just off of State Highway 165 just north of the dam.

The Visitor Center features a display of wildflowers and plants indigenous to the area as well as a nature display and a short video on the hatchery and the process of producing the trout that makes Lake Taneycomo one of the premier trout fisheries in the nation. There is also a huge aquarium with some “lunker” Brown and Rainbow Trout indicating the size of some of the trout in Lake Taneycomo. The Visitor Center opens at 9:00 a.m. every day except, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day.

Branson Landing Boardwalk looking south toward
the “home port” of the “Branson Landing Princess”
and the river boat replica, “Lake Queen.”

3. Branson Landing Boardwalk – Although there are many free hiking opportunities in the Branson area, one that is very accessible to everyone, is level and very family friendly is the scenic paved boardwalk running 1.5 miles along Lake Taneycomo. Parking is available right off Branson Landing Boulevard in either the Belk or Bass Pro parking lots. Walk east toward Lake Taneycomo and you can’t miss it. The leisurely and level walk will provide a view of Branson Landing that most people never see, such as the beautiful landscaping between the east side of the landing’s buildings and the lake.

The walk will pass the Branson Landing Fountains and the docking facilities of Branson Landing Cruises, the “home port” of the “Branson Landing Princess” and the river boat replica, “Lake Queen.” Along the way there will be the opportunity to observe the boat traffic and activity on the lake and an excellent chance to observe various species of ducks, Canada Geese, Grey Herons, Black or Turkey Vultures (buzzards), an occasional Bald Eagle and other birds and water fowl.

4. Branson Landing Fountain Show – Branson Landing’s Fountains are located at the heart of Branson Landing at the foot of the “Town Square” on the Lake Taneycomo Lakefront. The fountains are a part of the spectacular $7.5 million water, fire, and light and music show. Weather and maintenance permitting the show is presented hourly on the hour starting at noon each day. Even during daylight hours, it is truly amazing to see and hear the bursts from the vertical “ fire canons” coordinated with fountains shooting geysers of water up to 120 feet in the air all musically choreographed, but add darkness and the lights and it becomes spectacular.

The Branson Landing Fountain show is an excellent item to combine with numbers 3 and 5 on the list or a simply a walk up and down the Branson Landing Promenade. Although weather and seasonally dependent, Branson Landing also has “street performers,” singers, clowns, etc. entertaining up and down the promenade during the vast majority of the “season.”

5. Historic Downtown Branson’s Discovery Trolley – The green trolleys run a 15 minute loop through Historic Downtown Branson and the length and breadth of Branson Landing. The trolleys stops can be boarded in Historic Downtown Branson at Commercial and Main Street, and two blocks south at Commercial and College Street or at Branson Landing at the Bass Pro Shops parking lot and Belk department store parking lot near the parking lot end of their respective buildings.

The ride provides an excellent way to get an overview of the historic downtown area, Branson Landing, the Branson Convention Center and to see Lake Taneycomo. Along the way you will pass Branson’s first theatre, the Owens Theatre and the spot where the first show in Branson performed, the “Baldknobbers Jubilee” and the grave of the man the city of Branson is named after Ruben S. Branson.

Passengers can get on and off at any stop. With the convenient 15 minute loop the trolley makes, it easy for those shopping down at Branson Landing to take the trolley up to the historic district to experience its unique shopping and restaurants and vice versa. It should be noted that although there is no time limit on parking at Branson Landing there is a two hour limit for the vast majority of the free parking in Historic Downtown Branson.

Davis brothers win $10,000 in CPAA Skeeter Tour Bass Tournament

Weigh Master Kory Mitchell and Jackie Davis
holding two of the five bass making up his
teams winning 24.44 pounds total.

Neither snow nor ice shall keep the dedicated tournament bass fisherman from the pursuit of a $10,000 first prize. Despite the early spring and ice and snow storm that impacted parts of Missouri and Kansas last weekend, the Branson based Central Pro-Am Association (CPAA) held the first team tournament of the “2009 CPAA Missouri Skeeter Tour” at the Lake of the Ozarks, Sunday, March 29. Jim Thompson, CPAA’s owner said that 92 boats took off from the ramp at Public Beach #2 in Osage Beach in 31 degree temperatures.

He estimated that, without the wintery weather forecast for the tournament site and the actual snow and ice storms to the north and west the day before, there would have been at least 125 boats in the tournament. He said, except for the 31 degree temperature at the take off, it was a wonderful day for fishing and all the participants were enthusiastic and excited.

Thompson said that this was the first of three team tournaments making up the “2009 CPAA Missouri Skeeter Tour” with a guaranteed first place prize of $10,000 for each tournament. The Tour uses the Team format with one team of two fishermen in each boat. The winner and tournament placements are determined by the highest total weight with a team limit of a maximum of five bass.

Thompson said the fishing was excellent and that each of the 18 teams receiving a payout weighed in a “bag” with a limit of five bass. Thompson stated that $18,400.00 was collected from the fishermen and all $18,400.00 was paid back in prizes. The guaranteed First place prize of $10,000 was won by the team of Jimmy Davis, Jr. and Jackie Davis, brothers from Willard, with a total weight of 24.44 pounds. They won an additional $630.00 for catching the second biggest bass in the tournament weighing 7.35 pounds. The team of Dave Thomason and Todd Eddington won $1,170.00 for catching the biggest single bass in the tournament, weighing 7.79 pounds.

Second through Tenth place with the total weight in pounds and prize payout are as follows: Second, James Edge and Jerry Roark, 23.05 pounds, $1,760.00, Third, James Watson and Robbie Dodson, 20.52 pounds, $1,050.00, Fourth, Stan Snelson and Butch Belt, 19.48 pounds, $950.00, Fifth, Bobby Sullivan and Jim Bible, 19.28 pounds, $780.00, Sixth, Mark Wiese, Jr. and Kelly Power, 18.59 pounds, $630.00, Seventh, Lupe Garcia and Joey Penzo, 18.30 pounds, $530.00, Eighth Dave Thomason and Todd Eddington, 18.04 pounds, $430.00, Ninth, Andre Dickneite and Joe Wieberg, 17.52 pounds, $330.00, and Tenth, Bob Richardson and Lynn Luther, 17.44 pounds, $285.00.

Thompson said, unlike the regular CPAA Tournaments where, in addition to the prize payouts in each tournament, cumulative points are earned toward a free entry championship at the end of the season. Each of the three “CPAA Missouri Skeeter Tour” tournaments is non-cumulative and has a $10,000 first place guaranteed by Skeeter. The next two CPAA Skeeter Tour Tournaments are on May 9 at Table Rock Lake and on July 26, at Truman, Lake.

Annual Table Rock shoreline cleanup needs volunteers

One of Branson’s greatest tourism and scenic assets is Table Rock Lake, but trash ending up on the shoreline of the lake happens even though, in a perfect world, it shouldn’t. It is the result of the intentional and accidental infusion of trash into, onto, or around the lake resulting from the traffic Table Rock Lake and its immediate surrounding area receives from fishing, hunting, camping, boating, swimming, hiking, and other activities.

Even as people “volunteer” to create the problem through their intentional or negligent acts, it takes other volunteers to clean up and mitigate the problem others have created. Table Rock Water Quality Inc. (TRLWQ), a not for profit corporation whose main mission is maintaining and improving the quality of the ground and surface waters of the Table Rock Lake watershed, is coordinating the annual shoreline cleanup of the lake.

According to a statement on its web site, www.trlwq.org, 2009’s annual shoreline cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, April 4. David Casaletto, Executive of TRLWQ, said the 2009 cleanup is named the “Table Rock Marina Association Shoreline Cleanup,” after its major funding sponsor. The web site statement also points out that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Table Rock Lake will supply trash bags, dumpsters for the trash collected, and other major assistance for the cleanup in support of the hundreds of volunteers who typically participate in the cleanup.

Statistics on the web site indicate that weather and the high water lake levels over the last two years, particularly in 2008, resulted in a drastic cut in the number of shoreline miles that have been cleaned and the total tons of trash and tires collected and removed from the shoreline. Those same statistics show that since 2004 the number of volunteers has dropped from 1016 in 2004 to about 600 in 2008.

It is anticipated that near normal lake levels this year will expose more shore line and make it easier to get to and collect the trash. Casaletto confirmed that will only happen however, if there are enough volunteers to take advantage of the situation.

Normally volunteers are organized into teams made up of members of civic organizations, homeowner’s associations, scouting groups, college students, businesses etc., but Casaletto said that a “team” could consist of just an individual. Teams can register either on line, by going to the website www.trlwq.org and following the appropriate links, or by calling TRLWQ at 417-739-4100.

He also pointed out that, because of the hundreds of miles of shoreline involved in the cleanup, there is no one central gathering place and teams can obtain supplies such as bags, gloves, water, dumpster lists, etc., at the TRLQ office located 2 Kissee Avenue, Kimberling City or by calling 417-739-4100 and making appropriate arrangements. He went on to say that each team member participating in the shoreline cleanup will receive a shoreline cleanup t-shirt and a camping voucher for Table Rock Lake U.S. Army Corps campgrounds.

My Neighbor’s Pantry in New Location

Gift of Hope, Inc., recently acquired My Neighbor’s Pantry and relocated the food service to 10275 East Missouri 76 across from The River church. The pantry was founded six years ago in Rockaway Beach by Jan and Ernie McCabe. It provides food for more than 1,800 people a month. It was located in Forsyth in the former Catholic Church, but that building is now being developed as a history museum by the White River Historical Society.

Gift of Hope formed in 1989 when owners and employees of National Enzyme Company in Forsyth decided to forego the traditional gift exchange, and raised $700 to “adopt” a family. They now provide children with school supplies, food and clothing and help families with rent, utilities and other needs.

The Pantry is open noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. For more information or to help by volunteering or supplying food, call 417-546-8098 or visit www.giftofhopeinc.org.

Red Cross Seeking Volunteers

Volunteers are needed in Taney and Stone counties, said Donna Jones with the American Red Cross based in Springfield. They have about 700 volunteers in their 23-county area, but only a few in this area. They would like to have an advisory committee here as well. Volunteers take free training and can get introductory classes online. The most frequent need is response to fires, she said. Caseworkers provide comfort, assess damages and can in some circumstances immediately issue funds onto a credit card for the victims’ use. It’s especially critical now as we approach tornado and flood season, she said. For more information, visit www.redcross-ozarks.org or call Luke Bolz at 417-832-9500.

Garrett’s “A Tribute to John Denver” is a Branson “Gem”

James Garrett performing on stage duirng his
"A Tribute to John Denver" show at In the
Little Opry Theatre.

As Branson, Missouri celebrates 50 years of live music shows this year it offers almost 100 different shows of just about every type and music genre. James Garrett’s “A Tribute to John Denver” is a show that doesn’t have the marketing, star power, or “big” production style of some Branson’s better known shows, but what it does offer is two plus hours of some of the most enjoyable entertainment in Branson.

“A Tribute to John Denver” is presented in one of Branson’s smallest theaters, the “Little Opry Theatre” in the IMAX Complex, Monday through Saturday at 10:00 a.m. It stars James Garrett, who sang with the Grammy Award winning group the “Kendalls.” Garrett is supported by an an additional cast of four, a great three piece band made up of Randy Plummer, Base Fiddle, Rick Quincey, Mandolin, Steel Guitar, and Hammered Dulcimer, and Jim Glaspy. Banjo and Guitar and the vocal talents of Miss C. J. Newsom.

From Garrett’s first Denver number, “Hey It’s Good to Be Back Home Again,” until his last, “Calypso,” over two hours later, each word of the lyrics was clearly heard as he beautifully sang his way through a “portrait” of Denver’s music. As would be expected he sang most of Denver’s hit songs such as “Leaving On A Jet Plane,” “Rocky Mountain High,” “Sunshine On My Shoulders” “Annie’s Song,” and many more.

Two things however, might not be expected. The first becomes important when one considers that Denver wrote over 140 songs during his career. Garrett points out that even though a lot of them never became known as Denver hits, he considers some of them “gems.” Some of the “gems” included in the show are “Matthew,” Grandma’s Feather Bed,” and “Whispering Jesse.”

The second is Garrett’s ability to weave his personal relationship with Denver, and his extensive knowledge about his career, into interesting introductory vignettes for just about each piece of Denver’s music in the show, hits as well as the “gems.” The insight he shared about the guitar Denver was referring to in the song “This Old Guitar,” what it meant to him, its loss, eventual recovery and what happened to it after Denver’s death is, but one poignant example.

Another was when Garrett was talking about Denver’s ability to be simple and profound at the same time. He had asked Denver how he wrote so many songs and Denver replied that a song would just drift by and he would grab it. Even with all the shows in Branson, this show is a memorable entertainment “gem” that is a true tribute to John Denver and his music. It is an entertainment experience that one might not want to let drift by, whether a John Denver fan or not.

New CPAA bass tournament format proves successful

Lance Williams, of Billings, Mo, winner of the
Professional Division of the Skeeter/Yamaha
CPAA Tournament at Beaver Lake, displays
two of bass contributing to his tournament
winning total of 22.17 pounds.

The first tournament of the “2009 Central Pro-Am Association (CPAA) Schedule,” sponsored by Skeeter/Yamaha is history. The bass tournament was held recently on Beaver Lake with the take off and weigh in at Prairie Creek. It was the first tournament under the new ownership of Jim Thompson and using the new format of two separate tournaments, a one day Pro-Am Tournament on Saturday followed by a separate Team Tournament on Sunday.

Prior to the tournament Thompson said, “We are getting everything ready and are very excited about it.” When asked how he felt, after the tournament he said, “We were just tickled to death,” the fishing was great and all the participants just seemed glad to be there and were having a great time.

He went on to explain that in the “Pro-Am” tournament there are two divisions, “Professional” and “Amateur.” For the “Pro-Am Tournament” on Saturday, March 7, Thompson said that 78 fishermen fished in the “Professional Division” and 54 fished the “Amateur Division.” Each “Professional” has to have a boat for the tournament. Each “Amateur” is randomly assigned to fish with one of the Professionals.

He said that although there are two people in the boat they are not fishing as a team, but against the other anglers in their respective divisions, the professionals are fishing only against the other professionals and the amateurs only against the other amateurs. Thompson also pointed out that the professional controls the boat, fishes from the front of the boat while the amateur must fish from the back of the boat and has no control over where the boat goes.

Although Beaver Lake is the smallest of the Tri-Lakes’ lakes some hefty bass were caught. In the Professional Division Lance Williams, Billings, MO, won the first place prize of $2,615.00 with a five bass limit of 22.17 pounds. Matt Jones, Spokane, MO, won the second place prize of $1,802.00 with a five bass limit weighing 19.94 pounds and the top three was rounded out by Don Woolsey, Rogers, AR, who won the third place prize of $1,495 with a five bass limit weighing 14.78 pounds.

In the Amateur Division Matt Pruden, Springdale, AR, won a first place prize of $1,022.00 with three bass weighing 8.04 pounds. Scott Jones, Rogers AR, won the $730.00 second place prize with three bass weighing 7.84 pounds and Bobby King, Gentry, AR, won the third place prize of $620.00 with three bass weighing 7.05 pounds.

On Sunday, March 8, the tournament was a “Team Tournament” composed of two angler teams. Each team could weight in a total of five bass with the highest team weight determining the winner and placement. The first place prize of $1,476 was won by Mike Webb and Tim Sainato with five bass weighing 15.79 pounds, second place with a prize of $996.00 went to David Barker and Billy Bird with five bass weighing 15.78 pounds and the third place prize of $756.00 went to JR Beehler and Kyle Sarratt with five bass weighing 14.95 pounds.

In addition to the prize money for the tournament, each of the top ten finishers in each division of the Pro-Am Tournament held on March 7 and the Team Tournament held on March 8 qualifies to fish the no fee “Skeeter-Yamaha Central Pro-Am Association Championship” providing they have fished in at least five of the seven “2009 Skeeter-Yamaha CPAA Schedule” Tournaments.

The Pro-Am Championship, with a minimum 1st place prize of $12,000 for the Professional Division and $6,000 for the Amateur Division will be held at Stockton Lake Sep. 12-13. The Team Championship, with a minimum 1st place prize of $10,000 will be held at Bull Shoals Lake Oct. 3-4.

Family Spring Break Week in Branson

“Spring Break Week” occurs at different times in different places and means different things to different people. There’s the Panama City Beach, FL and South Padre Island, TX “college” type of Spring Break that most people have seen on television, either on the news or on various specials, emphasizing booze and partying creating the type of memories that a lot of the people creating them hope no one remembers. Then there is the Branson type of “family” Spring Break emphasizing togetherness, fun and the type of entertainment that creates the type of memories most people want to remember and share with others.

In Branson, the family nature of Spring Break Week ties in with the grades K-12 spring breaks. Just about everywhere one went in Branson between March 15 and March 21, the fact that families were taking a Spring Break in Branson was evident and for good reason. Perhaps nowhere else in the country has the concentration of activities that Branson has within such a compact geographic area.

Branson has huge 40 foot plus dinosaurs and a Butterfly Palace, a toy museum and a Hollywood museum, the Titanic and Ripley’s, drift boats powered by oars and a huge paddle wheel riverboat seating hundreds for a show, championship 18 hole golf courses to glow in the dark miniature golf, and lazar tag and go carts. It has shopping, restaurants, and live music and entertainment shows of just about every variety. If its family fun and entertainment, the chances are Branson has it.

From one end of Branson to the other, just about wherever one turned, there were families having a great time. Nowhere was that more apparent that at Branson’s largest and most popular attraction, Silver Dollar City which opened for its 2009 season during the week. Lamar Patton, the owner of Scotty’s Trout Dock and Marina, located on the shores of Lake Taneycomo in the city’s camp ground said that there was a large increase in the number of families renting boats and enjoying time on Lake Taneycomo fishing and sightseeing during the week. In his usual jovial manner Patton smiled and said, “Scotty’s just loves Spring Break Week.”

According to an article published in the March 20-21 edition of the Branson Daily Independent, Branson’s newest resort, the recently opened 200 room Castle Rock Resort and Waterpark, was booked solid for the entire Spring Break week. Michael Gahagan, the resorts general manager, was pleased with the Spring Break Week bookings and attributed it to the resorts aggressive pre opening and internet marketing.

The article went on to report that Amy Bobbitt of New Boston, Texas said this was her family’s first visit to Branson and it’s been a good experience. She said they were surfing the internet looking for a place to spend spring break and decided on Branson and Castle Rock. From the amount of traffic and activity in Branson during the week it is apparent that the Bobbitt’s aren’t the only ones who decided to spend their Spring Break in Branson.

Branson’s Silver Dollar City celebrates “Young Christians’ Weekend”

Branson’s Silver Dollar City is famous for the quality and family wholesomeness of the entertainment it provides on an everyday basis, but the celebration of “Young Christians’ Weekend,” which will be the week end of March 27 through March 29, is really something special. It is a weekend filled with all the food, rides, attractions etc. that Silver Dollar City is famous for plus special activities and entertainment specifically for Christian Youth.

The activities for “Young Christians’ Weekend,” begins with a concert by the band “DownHere” starting at 8:30 p.m. on Friday March 27. “DownHere” is a Canadian Christian rock band that has won Juno, Dove, and Covenant awards. The band is noted for their powerful vocals and ability to relate to their young audience.

On Saturday March 28 Silver Dollar City will for, all practical purposes, from opening to closing be centered on “Young Christians’ Weekend.” Although all the parks 30 rides and attractions, food, and restaurants will be available, its normal show schedule and other areas will be modified on that day only to accommodate “Young Christians’ Weekend.

These activities will include Christian and spirit filled activities, work-shops, speakers, and mini concerts. There will be three opportunities to see 2009 Dove Award Nominee “Kutless” in concert and hear the Christian witness of Tim Oliphant, NBC’s reigning “American Glaiator Champion at the Echo Hollow Amphitheatre, 12:00 p.m. , 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

On Sunday, March 28 the only scheduled “Young Christians’ Weekend” event is the opportunity to attend one of the two worship services 8 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. Both services will feature the music of 2009 Dove Award Nominee “Leeland” and the inspirational message of “Joe White” from Kanakuk Kamps.

It should be noted that the major impact of “Young Christians’ Weekend” on the operation of Silver Dollar City will be on Saturday March 28. Although large crowds of Christian young people are expected all three days, especially March 28, the events connected with “Young Christians’ Weekend being held on March 27 and 29, because of their scheduling, will not impact on the parks normal operation.” Silver Dollars City’s “Dates and Operating Hours,” as published on their web site, indicates that those not interested in the activities of “Young Christians’ Weekend” and wanting to get the full Silver Dollar City experience might be better served to pick a day other than March 28 to visit the park.

Branson to honor Purple Heart Recipients

Purple Heart Recipients Ray Wheeler,
left, and Aaron Wintterle speaking at
press conference.

Branson, Missouri has its entertainment stars that receive well deserved public acknowledgement and honor, virtually on a daily basis, for their talent and public performances in front of huge audiences at Branson’s shows and entertainment venues. Yet, on a daily basis, Branson has “Hero’s,” who silently and privately walk among us, receiving no public acknowledgement or honor for their sacrifice and the injuries they received in the service of their country.

These Heroes, for the most part, served out of the public’s eye in places like Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea, Normandy, Iwo Jima, Pearl Harbor, and too many other places to possibly name, but they all have something in common. That service was performed in the defense of their country and in the performance of that service they were wounded in combat and awarded the “Purple Heart” for that sacrifice.

The neat thing about Branson and its entertainment community is that the honoring of America’s veterans and active duty military personnel and their families is part of its very heart beat. As a group however, Branson, and probably no other place in the country, has made an effort to honor the men and women who have been awarded the “Purple Heart.”

At a recent press conference Marlyce Stockinger, Director of Public Relations and Advertising, Branson.Com, announced the specific details of an event designed to do exactly that. The event, sponsored by Branson.Com, is entitled “Hand-in-Hand Branson Honors Purple Heart Recipients” and will be held at various locations throughout the Branson Area on Apr. 24 and 25 and is part of Branson’s celebration of “Ozark Mountain Spring.”

Stockinger, emotionally reading from a prepared script, described two specific instances where a member of America’s Armed Forces received the Purple Heart for injuries received while in combat. She graphically described the combat service of U.S. Marine sniper Aaron Wintterle when he was shot in the face while serving in Bagdad, Iraq. In the same manner she described the U.S. Army service of Ray Wheeler during the Vietnam War and how he was shot nine times resulting in not only being awarded three Purple Hearts, but a Bronze Star and the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal.

In both instances she described the price of that service in terms the immediate medical procedures necessary to save and preserve their lives. Too, she went on to describe the continuing price that they pay on an almost daily basis as they continue to recover from both the physical and mental effects of their service.

When she finished, Stockinger introduced Aaron Wintterle of Mt. Vernon and Ray Wheeler of Reeds Spring who walked out on the stage to a standing ovation. Strangely, well perhaps not so strangely, these wounded warriors did not come to talk about themselves or their own experiences. They had shared their stories with Stockinger, permitted her to use them, and were present because they believed in the event could be of benefit to other Purple Heart Recipients and to encourage their attendance.

Larry Milton, co-owner of Branson.Com and Branson Tourism Center with his wife Lianne, thanked Wintterle and Wheeler, not only for their service to their country, but for being there to “remind us of what we should be so thankful for.” Stockinger suggested that the unique and inspirational “Purple Mountain Majesty Twilight Ceremony” at Branson Landing at April 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. would provide an excellent opportunity for the public to display that thankfulness and honor the Purple Heart Recipients by attending and participating.

She said the Purple Heart Recipients will gather at the parking lot at Bass Pro Shops at 5:30 p.m. on April 25 and walk the promenade lined with members of the public on both sides holding candles. After walking the promenade, the Purple Heart Recipients and the public will share in a moving ceremony at the Branson Landing Fountains. The featured speaker will be “9-11 Pentagon” survivor Sergeant Major Tony Rose (ret.).

Stockinger emphasized that all the activities connected with “Hand-in-Hand Branson Honors Purple Heart Recipients” are free to Purple Heart Recipients and that a full list of activities is available on line at either the Branson.Com or Branson Tourism Center websites. She encourages the active participation of all Purple Heart Recipients in the event and said she is available to answer questions and provide assistance by phone at 417-334-2360.

Missouri wine with Easter ham and chocolate bunnies

Branson’s Mount Pleasant Winery on Green
Mountain Drive.

In Branson, Missouri, as is the case in a lot of other places, wine with Easter Dinner is not common. Mount Pleasant Winery, with wineries in Branson and Augusta, Missouri, recently sent out an e-mail informational piece about finding the perfect Missouri wine to go with an Easter meal.

Ham, particularly a ham glazed with either honey or some other fruit, is an Easter tradition at many Easter dinners. To compliment the ham, Mount Pleasant suggests a semi-dry wine such as their “Rhineland,” a wine with slightly low acidity, medium body, medium sweetness, and the aroma of pears, citrus, and daffodils.

Mount Pleasant also suggests a medium to full-bodied red wine if lamb or beef is being served for Easter. They recommend their two year aged “Norton,” a full bodied red wine with the mixed flavor of red and black berries, vanilla, spice and toasted oak. The Mount Pleasant Winery “Claret” is recommended as another good option because of its “medium-bodied fruit and wood flavors.”

There are even wines for dessert such as Mount Pleasant’s “Brut Imperial” or “Ten Buck” sparkling wines. For heavier desserts or sweets like chocolate, a Port such as their “Vintage Port” is suggested because “it has the big and complex flavors and aromas needed to complement chocolate.”

Mark Baehmann, Vice President of Winemaking & Vineyard Operations at Mount Pleasant Winery, said, “Ultimately, it is important to drink what you like, but do not be afraid to try something new once in awhile. You might surprise yourself.” He went on to say, “Any quality wine will complement a great dish, so do not over think it.”

Mount Pleasant Wineries is celebrating their 150th anniversary this year. The Branson Winery in is located at 3125 Green Mountain Drive just east of the intersection of State Highway 165 and Green Mountain Drive.

Hollywood Wax Museum Gets $5 Million Makeover

Tej Sundher, one of the owners of the Hollywood Wax Museum that opened in 1996, said they’re confident in Branson’s future as a popular tourism destination. Enough to invest $5 million in a re-do of the attraction, he said.

Wax sculpture techniques now produce even more realistic figures, and guests will be able to walk right up to the new Wax Museum “stars” and take their pictures with them. He hopes lots of those photos will be on Facebook and other social networks.

Sundher’s grandfather built the first Hollywood Wax Museum in Hollywood, Calif. One of the new displays allows guests to sing for the American Idol judges. Recently, Simon Cowell was seen sitting in one of the museum’s offices—at least, it sure looked like him.

The outside of the building also is changing and will become an attraction in its own right. The museum will open Tuesday, March 17, although exterior work will continue.

No Prom Duplicates

Lana Johnson Nichols, who owns the Touch of Class shop in the Shoppes At Branson Meadows, recently talked about the store’s special efforts to make prom-goers very happy. She keeps a list of those who purchase prom dresses in her formal-wear shop—as well as the men’s tuxedos—from all the area high schools. That way, the girls don’t have to worry about seeing someone else in their dress on that all-important night, she said.

She said the popular prom dresses this year are more sophisticated than ever. They’re also already selling wedding attire. And the shop has a new in-house alteration service. Call 334-0303 or visit www.touchofclassformals.net.

The “Clever Store Name” Category

Never a Dull Moment is a new shop across from Arvest Bank in Branson Landing. It’s a knife shop but also sells a variety of hunting, camping and sporting goods; outfitter supplies, books, camping food and more. They carry Browning Knives with bone handles, or lapis and inlaid wood. They also have professional knives used by police, military and hunters.

It’s owned by Joseph and Karen Duaime, who had a similar store in Dallas for years, but decided they love Branson and plan to retire here, he said. Call 239-1122.

Upcoming Community Economic Forecast

The community is invited to attend the annual Community Marketing Presentation by the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, April 3, in the Keeter Center on the campus of College of the Ozarks.

The presentation will cover 2008 research statistics on visitor numbers and revenue; a forecast for the 2009 season; details of the marketing, media, public relations and sales plans and news from the organization. Mark the date on your calendars.

Momma’s Meat Loaf

Andy William’s Moon River Grill will be open from 3 to 9 p.m. beginning March 27, and will start regular lunch and dinner hours April 21. They’ll still feature favorite recipes of Andy’s mother, Florence Williams, including meat loaf and chicken pot pie, said general manager Loralei McCoy. And don’t miss the Gouda Macaroni and Cheese.

The restaurant has become an entertainment destination where local performers drop in. This year, Bill Medley, The Comets and Paul Revere will be there to meet visitors before or after their shows in the Moon River Theatre.

Thursday is Midweek Moon Madness where there will be Happy Hour drink specials 10 to 11 p.m. and Open Mike from 9 p.m. to midnight. There are Friday and Saturday night jam sessions after the shows let out, and the fabulous Gail Lennon will be back for her popular special engagements.

The Feet of Fire Irish dance show, the park’s largest Irish production ever, features a full cast of nearly two dozen championship step dancers, singers and musicians. This year the show presents new performers and elements, including two “fire dancers” twirling flaming fans, making dramatic visual patterns with flames as they dance to traditional music.

Additional World-Fest performers include Invaders, a steel drum band from Trinidad and Tobago, presenting traditional calypso and reggae music of the Caribbean islands; Russian Academic Band, a brass band from Russia, playing brass ensemble music from Russian classics to American jazz. New Zealand musician Jenny Blackadder, winner of numerous international music awards for her mastery of the banjo; and Australian entertainer Wayne Horsburgh, performing music from Australian favorites to American country, in his final World-Fest performance

Dining is an international experience too at Tastes of the World, a pavilion of global specialties. Guests can feast on selections such as hearty Irish stew, savory Czech Kolacky meat pies, Greek salads, desserts from baklava to tiramisu, and even international Coke flavors.

A rainy day in Branson still means family fun

There’s a saying in the Ozark’s, “If you don’t like the weather wait about 15 minutes it will change.” The good news about a visit to Branson, Missouri is there are a wide variety of fun filled exciting shows, attractions, and activities that are not weather dependent. Although a some of Branson attractions and activities such as Silver Dollar City, White Water, and other primarily outdoor activities can have their operations effected by weather the vast majority Branson’s entertainment will not.
For the purposes of this article, we are going to assume that a family of two adults and two children, ages 10 and 12, vacationing in Branson wakes up to the sound of rain beating against their window. A check of the local weather on the “8’s” of the Weather Channel indicates it’s going to be rainy and stormy for most of the day. It is decided to delay the days planned trip to White Water until the next day and take advantage of some of Branson’s non-weather dependent fun and entertainment.
One obvious choice, considering that Branson is celebrating 50 years of live music shows this year and is known as the live music show capital of the world would be going to a Branson show. A show that is great for families with children is Grand Country’s “Amazing Pet Show” featuring comedy, audience participation and, of course, the pets. It’s a morning show and offers a family pass for the whole family for under $60.00 plus tax etc. Lunch couldn’t be simpler with the Grand Country Buffet located in the same building.
Children of all ages love toys, so how about a trip to the “World’s Largest Toy Museum” after lunch. The museum is located at 3609 West Highway 76 near the Olive Garden Restaurant and contains toys dating from the Civil War period to present day, from Howdy Doody to Barbie and Star Wars.
If not toys, how about a trip to the Shepherd of the Hills Hatchery? It has an interesting film on Table Rock Dam and how trout are raised, an indoor aquarium and, if the weather co-operates the opportunity to walk the “runs” where the kids can feed the thousands of Rainbow and Brown Trout being raised for release into Lake Taneycomo and other trout fisheries within the state of Missouri.
Or how about Branson’s Dinosaur Museum, located just east of Wal-Mart on Highway 76? It has over 50 life-sized dinosaurs ranging from the one foot Micro Raptor to the 42 foot Tyrannosaurus Rex and a learning center and fossil exhibit.
Want more action? How about indoor miniature golf at the Grand Country, the Branson Fun Factory, or Glowgolf at the Branson Landing? Speaking of Branson Landing, while you’re there take a walk through Bass Pro Shops to see its wild life exhibits and huge aquarium filled with trout.
And we have just touched the surface. “Believe it or Not” from the “Titanic” to “Hollywood” and lots in between, any day in Branson, even a rainy day, can be filled with the type of fun and exciting things that create family memories lasting a lifetime.

Walker’s 26 pound 11 ounce limit leads Table Rock FLW after Day 1

David Walker of Sevierville, TN picture
holding a 7 pound 7 ounce Table Rock Bass
that won him the Folgers Big Bass of the Day
prize and was part of the 26 pound 11 ounce
total that placed him in first place for Day 1 .

In terms of weather the statement, “You should have been in Branson last week” would have been appropriate for those wanting warmer weather. But, the cold front that just moved through Branson earlier in the week and the threatened snow on the first day of the FLW-Mart Tour Bass Tournament on Table Rock Lake March 12 – 15, didn’t seem to hold the competitors back much.

The tournament has a total of 156 professional and 156 co-anglers competing for prizes ranging from $100,000 to $10,000 on the professional side and $20,000 to $800 on the co-angler side. The professional angler pays more to enter the tournament than the co-angler, controls the boat, determines where to fish, and fishes from the front of the boat. The co-angler pays less to enter the tournament, fishes where the professional chooses, and fishes from the back or the boat. The professional and co anglers are paired up for each tournament randomly by computer.

The field of 156 competitors in each division will be narrowed down to 10 finalists after the second day of competition, Friday March 13. The ten professional finalists will be competing for prizes from $100,000 for first place to $15,000 for tenth place. The co-angler finalists will be competing for prizes ranging from $20,000 for first place to $1,500 for tenth place. In this tournament prizes will be awarded at back at least 40 additional places and will range from $12,500 to $10,000 on the professional side and $1,300 to $800 on the co-angler side.

At the end of the first day of the tournament, David Walker of Sevierville, TN, from the BP, Team had caught a five fish limit of the 26 pounds 11 ounces including a 7 pound 7 ounce Table Rock bass that won him the Folgers Big Bass of the Day prize of $750.00. Amazingly, Walker’s BP Team mate, Sinichi Fukae from Mineola, TX was in second place with a five fish limit of 22 pounds 5 ounces. The professionals caught 94 five bass limits of which six were 20 pounds or greater and another 39 were 15 pounds or greater.

On the co-angler side Zac Cassill of Fairfax, IA is in first place with 17 pounds 6 ounces and David Laur from South Bend, IN is in second with 16 pounds four ounces.

The Take-Off for each morning of the Tournament is at the State Park Marina off of State Highway 165 at 7:00 a.m. The weigh-in will be at the marina on Friday March 13 at 3:00 p.m. and at the Branson Convention Center on March 14 and 15 at 4:00 p.m.

Even an iconic Branson show doesn’t change by osmosis

In Branson, Missouri, the town called the “music show capital of the world,” the only way a show survives year after year is if it gives its audiences an entertainment experience that they will remember, share with others and return to see again. As Branson celebrates 50 years of live music shows this year, Presleys’ Country Jubilee, Branson’s first show on the Branson strip, has been doing exactly that for over 40 years.

This is the second in a three part series that attempts to chronicle exactly what happens between the time the curtain goes down one year and comes up the next to make sure that happens. In the first article entitled “Presleys’ goal is making each year’s show new, fresh and exciting” Steve Presley outlined the general planning process that takes place and said, “Show changes are always a given” and he could not recall ever starting a new season where the material in the show was not at least 50 to 60 percent different from the season before.

This article, based on a recent interview with Gary and Eric Presley, will discuss the specifics of how those changes are made. In real life Gary, “Herkirmer” in the show and Eric, “Cecil” in the show, are father and son. This father and son duo provides the dynamic and exciting comedy that has helped make the Presleys’ Country Jubilee the success it has been for so many decades.

Eric said that a large part of getting the content of the new show ready, especially from a comedy perspective, is deciding what to keep and what to change. There are some routines people just like so much they expect to see them from year to year. He said it is not uncommon to have people ask why they are not doing a specific routine anymore.

When asked what one routine they have done in the past that they would not consider doing a show without they both had different answers. Gary said this year it would be Eric’s routine involving “Cecil” swallowing a balloon because it has been such a crowd pleaser since he introduced it a couple of years ago. Eric said another one would be when Gary, “Herkimer,” comes out on the stage reading the “Enquirer” and interfaces with the “straight man,” the shows Master of Ceremonies, as he reads it.

Erick said he spends a lot of time going over old videos and audios of the show looking for something they haven’t used that might be just right for this year’s show.. He said that it helps him to study some of the old routines in terms of timing and crowd response.

When asked what percentage of the show is comedy they said they didn’t really look at it that way. Gary said the comedy is mixed into the flow of the show in a manner they hope will keep the audience, especially the kids excited and involved. Eric said it is very seldom that some sort of comedy doesn’t take place at least every two musical numbers and sometimes more often.

Gary pointed out that you never know how a new routine is going to go over until it’s tried on a crowd. He said if a singer does a song they will at least get some applause, but if a comedian tells a joke or performs a routine that doesn’t go well with the crowd, its total silence.

Obviously, Gary and Eric are the ones who work up the shows comedy, but it is the way it is integrated into the opening night performance that is unique. On opening night everyone is surprised even the band and the rest of the cast. Erick said the first time they see the new comedy routines for the show is on opening night with everyone else and “They’ll have no idea what we are doing until the curtain goes up that night.”

Gary pointed out that the band and cast will know what old routines they are going to do and where the all the routines will be performed in the show. They will however, not know the content of the new material until opening night, “That way,” he said, “We can get the casts unbiased initial reaction to the new material.”

In terms of developing the music for the new show Gary and Eric indicated that it’s pretty much a family affair. They get together about eight weeks before opening night and mutually decide on the music that they will start the season with. He indicated that, like with the comedy, there are favorites that the audience likes to hear and the challenge is to blend the new in with old. Once the music is picked they begin their individual preparation and move into the rehearsal mode.

Presleys’ Country Jubilee will open its 2009 Branson season on Friday, March 13 at 8:00 p.m.

Titanic Irish Festival enhances an already great experience

Ireland’s Flag flying near Titanic entrance as
part of "Titanic Honors the Irish celebration.

Almost 97 years ago, at 11:30 p.m. on April 14, 1912 the unsinkable RMS Titanic was breached by an iceberg. Less than three hours later she achieved a static permanent place in history as she sank to a watery grave in the frigid waters of the north Atlantic taking 1513 passengers and crew with her. Fortunately, although the great ship herself might be a static piece of history at the bottom of the Atlantic, the celebration and memory of her short life and the passengers and crew who sailed on her are anything but static at "Branson’s Titanic-Worlds Largest Museum Attraction".

Although the museum itself, built on half scale to the original and towering 100 feet above the ground, is impressive, it is the way it is continually evolving and changing to give its guests a new and exciting experience that adds the life and excitement to the memory of what it is celebrating. This year, for the entire month of March, the museum is celebrating “Titanic Honors the Irish” an event dedicated to the Irish involvement with the RMS Titanic from its building and routing to the composition of its crew and passengers on its fateful voyage.

As one would expect, the event will have Irish music and a few other surprises, but what one would not expect is the integration of “new” Irish crew members and passengers in a manner that, while sharing the basic Titanic experience, does it from such a completely different perspective, that it’s an entirely different exciting experience.

Although this writer has been through the Titanic before he had never met Titanic Stewardess/Nurse Violet Jessop before his “voyage” on March 7. Nurse Jessop shared that she was working on the Titanic at the time it sank and barely survived as she got on the last lifeboat launched. She went on to describe two other near death experiences at sea that, simply put, adds new meaning to the “Term luck of the Irish.”

During the “voyage,” Father Francis Browne, a Jesuit priest and photographer from Ireland shared that there were 120 passengers on the ship that “called Ireland home.” Father Browne went on to point out that the Titanic was built in Ireland, launched in Ireland, and that Queensland (Cobh) Ireland was her last port of call prior to the start of her fateful trip across the Atlantic.

A little later in the voyage, Third Class Irish Passengers Agnes McCoy and Patrick Dooly also shared the details of their RMS Titanic voyage. From romance to familial love their stories added additional excitement, depth, and meaning to the museum experience.

Nurse Jessop, Father Brown, and Third Class Passengers McCoy and Dooly are all traveling on the Titanic as part of the Irish Festival. The description of what they shared is intentionally brief so as to not spoil the surprise, excitement, and adventure of the experience for those who might be taking a similar voyage on the Titanic as part of its March “Titanic Honors the Irish” Festival. One thing is very obvious, the members of the Titanic crew have not only prepared very well for their roles in this event, but, as importantly, really care about what they are doing and the experience the guest has.

With the interaction of the Titanic’s crew with its guests it’s sometimes hard not to look at the Titanic as a Branson show rather than just an attraction or museum. After the March 7 voyage on the Titanic as part of its Irish Festival and watching the Irish crew and passengers entertaining the museums guests that distinction just became harder. As an aside, if on your voyage, the opportunity to experience Nurse Jessop’s recitation of the poem, “Third Class 1912” by Tom Peters should present itself, don’t miss it.

A Gyro and A Beer

That’s just one of the treats Samson Tsahiridis is cooking up at Gyros & More on Missouri 76 across from the entrance to the Tanger Mall. It’s a Greek restaurant. He describes it as a Greek tavern. They serve beer and wine.

The food couldn’t be more authentic with stuffed grape leaves, hummus, tabouli, falafels, the gyro lamb turning on a spit and baklava for dessert. The Big Fat Greek Burger with feta cheese is a favorite, he said. Another favorite is the Greek salad with homemade dressing. It’s the same recipe his dad, Dimitri Tsahiridis, used at Dimitris.

He said a lot of customers are locals who crave Greek food. He’s open daily except Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. He’ll extend the hours for summer. Call 337-5282.

Branson’s “SIX” show gets great overview on 1Branson.Com

A March 3 article entitled “1Branson.Com poster’s overview on Branson show ‘SIX,” posted on www.news.branson.com used an unusual way informing people about the Branson show “SIX.” Rather than having a show “review” written by one person the article used the comments of multiple posters to one of Branson’s largest on line interactive forums www.1Branson.Com.

The forums on 1 Branson.Com are unique in that, in addition to those not living in the Branson area, a lot of local Branson people, including people from shows, attractions, and restaurants, participate in the various forums helping people get the information they want. There are forums covering just about every aspect of Branson from Dining, Shows, Attractions, Outdoors, etc

Recently, in the Show Forum a poster posted a comment about what a great experience their daughter and son-in-law had at the “SIX” show in Branson. It was interesting to watch how the additional comments from other posters on the forum helped paint a more complete picture of the experience one could expect if they went to the show.

Although it describes a show with no instruments, the posters raved about the variety and quality of the music, and a show with no formal comedian, the posters pointed out that the whole group provided the comedy. During the discussion it was pointed out that the show appeals to people of all ages, including young children, with more than one poster sharing their positive experiences with children in the three to eight year old range.

After reading the comments most would agree that Branson’s “SIX,” to use the words of one poster, “is a terrific show!!!!!

Excerpts from the article:

On Feb. 22, poster “shis1” wrote, “Daughter and son-in-law just returned from a long weekend in Branson. They’re not really into shows and it takes a lot to impress them, but they came home raving about SIX. When they found out we’ve never seen this one, their comment was ‘You’ve Gotta Go See Them This Year.’

On Feb. 27 Poster “chel2170” wrote, “Six blew me away! They are just awesome, and within one song you forget that they don’t have instruments….The tribute they do in their show for their late mother will bring you to tears.

Basketball’s “Big Show” being played in Branson

For some basketball fans spring means “March Madness” and some of the finest basketball of the year as teams compete for the national championship through a single elimination tournament. Although one of the national championships is called the “Big Dance,” here in Branson, Missouri, celebrating 50 years of live music shows this year, it would almost seem appropriate to call the national basketball championship it is hosting the “Big Show.

Branson’s basketball “Big Show” is the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship which will be played at the College of the Ozarks Keeter Gymnasium March 11-17. The single elimination tournament will feature 32 NAIA Division II teams that have either won conference championships or been granted an at large berth because of their quality of play.

The tournament, one of the many events connected with Branson’s Ozark Mountain Spring, will start the First Round of play on March 11 and 12 with eight games per day being played. The 16 winners will play the Second Round on Friday, March 13.

The surviving eight teams will compete in the Quarter-Finals on Saturday March 14 with the final four teams competing in the Semi-Finals on Monday March 16. The NAIA Division II Championship Game will be played at 8:50 p.m. on March 17.

Tickets may be purchased through the College of the Ozarks by calling 417-335-NAIA (6242). As of March 2, there was good availability for General Admission and Reserve Tickets to each of the individual sessions and General Admission Tournament Passes, good for all 31 games. It was pointed out that there are still a very few of the Reserved Seat Tournament Passes guaranteeing the same seat for all 31 games left.

Paul Miller, General Manager, Branson Tourism Center said the NAIA Division II Championship Tournament is a great event and brings a lot of people to the Branson area. He also reminds visitors to Branson that this year, in addition to the NAIA tournament, here are two national level Bass Tournaments, the Walmart FLW Tour on Table Rock Lake and The Bass Federation National Championship on Bull Shoals Lake, going on at the same time and advises them to plan accordingly.

Branson shows the Lucia Branson “zig zag”

Most of the millions of visitors coming to the “live music show capital of the world,” Branson, Missouri, will never experience one of the unique historical features of the city of Branson, its “zig zag” streets. As compared to some of the more exciting things Branson has to offer, Branson’s zig zag streets might not be at the top of the list of things most visitors plan to experience while in Branson. However, they can certainly provide a pleasant five or ten minute side trip while on the way to or from Historic Downtown Branson or Branson Landing, between shows, or on a rainy day etc.

In addition, they provide an opportunity to discuss a little bit of the history of the city of Branson and is an excellent lead into the various historical things to see in Historic Downtown Branson. Things such as the site where the Mabe family started the Branson’s first show, the “Baldknobbers,” Ruben S. Branson’s grave, the place where the fire started that almost destroyed the newly chartered city of Branson, the oldest free standing building in Branson, and of course “Dick’s 5 & 10.”

As one drives east on Highway 76 and passes the Highway 76/65 interchange they will notice a McDonalds to the north (left). The local “street name” for this portion of State Highway 76 is “Main Street” and the McDonalds is at the intersection of Sixth and Main Streets.

Although the street signage is less than impressive, that intersection looks like most other intersections and one could turn either right (south) or left (north). However, if one turns right on Sixth and drives south two blocks, passing Pacific they come to the apparent end of Sixth Street at its intersection with College Street.

It is only when one “Zigs,” by turning left on College and then, about a quarter of a block down College, “Zags” back onto Sixth Street by turning right that the zig zag alignment of Sixth Street becomes apparent. If the Sixth street turn is missed basically the same thing can be done by turning onto Fourth or Third Streets.

Some might ask the question, “Why didn’t the people who planned Branson simply have the streets go straight through?” The answer is because the city of Branson, as it was originally incorporated on April 1, 1912, was actually a combination of two different plats with different roads, alignments, and block lengths.

In the early 1900s, as the rail road started into the “Branson area,” there were competing interests trying to get land and plat towns. The first town platted was “Lucia” on October 2, 1903 with the town of “Branson” platted soon after on October 26, 1903. According to most historical accounts, Charles Fulbright and his “Branson Town Company” acquired both town sites by the end of 1903. The official records of the U.S. Post Office indicate that the name of the “Branson” Post Office was changed from “Branson” to “Lucia” in 1902 and changed back to “Branson: again in 1904.

In general, College Street was the dividing line between the Lucia and Branson town plats, being the northern edge for Lucia and the southern edge for Branson. The alignment of the current Long Street is representative of Lucia’s southern edge and the current Atlantic Street Branson’s northern edge with Commercial Street being Lucia’s eastern edge and Sycamore Street Branson’s. Although relative because of differing block sizes, both were widest at their eastern edge with Lucia being about three and one half blocks wide and Branson six blocks. The western edge of each plat was slightly west of the current intersection of Main and Sixth Streets.

An Ole Seagull’s last column is but a “Letter to the Editor”

Someone a lot wiser than an Ole Seagull said, “There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven.” Although perhaps not soon enough for some, the Ole Seagull’s “appointed time” as a columnist has come to an end.

He could write a lot of words about why, but in the final analysis it is simply because he thinks it is the right thing to do in terms of his current personal and business situation. Does that mean he will stop expressing his opinion?

Absolutely not! He will continue to submit his opinions, on a regular basis, as a “Letter to the Editor” under exactly the same conditions as any other reader of this paper could do.

Some might ask, “What’s the difference, they are both opinions?” In an Ole Seagull’s mind, the difference isn’t much and what difference there is relates not to “what” is being written, but in “who” wrote it. The same opinion, written by a “columnist” for the paper and written by a reader as a “Letter to the Editor” could result in different perceptions, connotations, and impacts.

That aside however, to an Ole Seagull, his job as an opinion columnist was to honestly express his opinion in the hopes that it would generate discussion within the community about that topic. His columns, as is the case of the vast majority of columns written by opinion columnists, are what they are, simply the opinion of the columnist, even as a “Letter to the Editor” is, but the opinion of the person writing the letter.

An opinion column, like a “Letter to the Editor,” is not a treatise intending to fairly cover both sides of an issue nor is it necessarily balanced, fair, or unbiased. It is hopefully, something the writer knows about, cares about, and feels passionately about, written in a manner that will be interesting to the reader. Is it necessarily something that most people will agree with? No, but in the vast majority of cases, it will be something that virtually everyone will either agree or disagree with based on their own understanding.

From an Ole Seagull’s perspective, it has never been about the “columnist” or whether people agreed or disagreed with his columns. What mattered to him was that he had done his best to express honest opinions and make sure that the column contained the basis upon which those opinions were based so that they could be evaluated by the readers. Isn’t that the same standard that should be applied to “Letters to the Editor?”

Previously the Ole Seagull has pointed out that he has, on occasion, been questioned about what qualifications he possessed that qualified him to his write his opinions and why anyone should pay any attention to them. In order, he answered “only his life’s experience” and “they shouldn’t unless, one way or the other, they have evaluated those opinions and find them useful in their own decision making process.” It would be his opinion that those answers could apply to the value people should give to “Letters to the Editor.”

Some have asked if the Ole Seagulls writings will be posted on the internet any more. The answer is “Yes.” After this week, they will no longer be posted as editorials at www.BransonCourier.com or as posts on 1Branson.com, but they will be posted on the Ole Seagull’s website, www.TheOleSeagull.Com. In addition, The Ole Seagull, along with millions of others also “tweets” as "theoleseagull" on Twitter.Com.

For the opportunity, encouragement and help he has received over the years an Ole Seagull is eternally grateful and thankful. In terms of what he has written and how he has written it he will rely on the words Abraham Lincoln who said, “If the end brings me out all right, what’s said against me won’t amount to anything. If the end brings me out wrong, ten angels swearing I was right would make no difference.”
