  • Be Part of the Legend With Branson’s First Show The Baldknobbers in 2010

The Baldknobbers began Branson’s family entertainment phenomenon in 1959, when the four Mabe brothers began entertaining fisherman on the downtown Branson lakefront. Today, over fifty years later, the second and third generations of the Mabe family continue that family tradition of combining your favorite country classics, with hot-new country hits and hilarious country comedy into a fast paced show. It’s the songs you know and comedy that makes everyone (even the kids) laugh out loud.

The Mabe brothers adopted the name of an old Ozarks vigilante group that held their meetings on a treeless hilltop or "bald knob". So when the Mabe brothers started Branson’s first show, it was just natural to take a regional name.

Second generation and producer, Tim Mabe, known to many as Droopy Drawers, Jr., says, "My dad and uncles founded the hillbilly humor of the Baldknobbers on the adage of the city slicker who comes to town to take advantage of the old hillbilly. And the hillbilly always gets the last laugh. The jokes are different but over 50 years later, it still holds true."

Tim goes on to say, "We are one of the few shows that do an all new show each year. That means all new comedy, new music and even new costumes. And our show is completely live with some of the best singers and musicians in the country."
"The Baldknobbers show is entirely a group effort. Every cast member gets to put their stamp on our new show each year. The Baldknobbers don’t have a star, the show is our star," Tim said.
Second generation Baldknobber and bandleader Brent Mabe says, "All of us play at least a couple of instruments and almost all of us sing—yep even the comedians. It is a pleasure to work with such a great group of professionals, but more than that we have lots of fun. We all love what we do and even if you’re not related to us, you’re still family!"

Longtime Baldknobbers’ fans and new fans alike appreciate the Baldknobbers’ family traditions. It’s the great music and side-splitting comedy that have made this show popular from generation to generation. Come celebrate over 50 years of family fun with The Baldknobbers Jamboree!

As a co-founder of the “Baldknobbers Jamboree” in 1959 with his brothers, Mabe achieved iconic status in Branson entertainment history. Lianne Milton, co-owner of the Branson Tourism Center said, “Branson has lost not only one of its entertainment pioneers, but a cornerstones of its entertainment industry. Our thoughts, prayers, and sympathies are with the Mabes and their extended ‘Baldknobber family.’”

The Orlando Believe It or Not! Odditorium has been an iconic attraction along International Drive for 18 years and Branson, on the Highway 76 strip in the popular Ozark Mountain tourist destination, has been in operation for 16 years. Both are in high-volume tourism corridors and are well-known and respected members of their local business community. Both are built in Ripley’s patented “disaster architecture” style with the Orlando building appearing to be sliding into a sinkhole while the Branson building appears to being broken apart by the colossal earthquake of 1812 that rocked the area.

Pattison noted that acquiring the Orlando Odditorium is especially gratifying because it gives the company an opportunity to build a strong flagship attraction only a few miles from corporate headquarters. “This gives us the chance to create an ever-changing exhibition of our newest acquisitions while having the incredible ability to test our new concepts, including our cutting edge ideas in interactive exhibitry.”

The Branson acquisition provides yet another opportunity for the company. “It is well-respected and located in a very well known drive-to market, exactly the type of destination in which Ripley has always done well,” adds Pattison. “There is great potential there in the Ozarks for us to create additional tourism opportunities.”

Gary Daily, who has been with both locations for more than 10 years, will continue to oversee operations at both locations.

  • Branson Honors Four Hero Chaplains of WWII

On February 28, 2010, at 6:00pm, at the Skyline Baptist Church, 949 State Highway 165 in Branson, will host an event honoring the Four Chaplains who gave their lives for their men in WWII. Pastor Norm Howell will host the program and introduce the guest speaker, Chaplain (Colonel) Paul Vicalvi, US Army, Retired. Chaplain Vicalvi is the Executive Director of the National Association of Evangelicals Chaplain Commission.

George L. Fox, Alexander D. Goode, Clark V. Poling and John P. Washington each answered the call of their country in 1942. Their story is one of diversity, unity, strength, courage and love.

In November, 1942, four young men, bound by their common faith in God their Father, met and became friends at Chaplains’ School at Harvard University.
In January 1943, 920 men, including the four Army Chaplains, boarded the USAT Dorchester, an aging coastal liner pressed into service as a transport ship. Bound for an Army base in Greenland and filled to capacity with young soldiers on their way to battle, the men faced crowded conditions, rough seas and the knowledge of foreign battlefields in their future. The four Army chaplains calmed their fears and did their best to offer hope.

On February 2, within 150 miles of Greenland, Hans Danielson, the Dorchester’s captain, listened as his three Coast Guard escorts informed him of sonar readings that indicated an enemy submarine in “Torpedo Junction.” Already fighting Arctic winds and a deck covered with ice, the news was not good. Danielson instructed the soldiers to sleep in their clothes and life jackets. But hot and crowded conditions below deck led many of the men to ignore the warning and sleep in their underwear.
Shortly before 1:00am on February 3, a German U-Boat fired on the passing transport ship. The first torpedo hit “dead-on,” throwing men around like rag dolls. The second torpedo instantly killed 100 men in the hull of the ship. The ship tilted and life jackets slid into the icy winter water.

As men cried out, the four Chaplains answered their call. A survivor, Petty Officer John J. Mahoney, headed back towards his cabin. “Where are you going?” a voice asked.

“To get my gloves,” Mahoney replied.

“Here, take these,” said Rabbi Goode as he handed a pair of gloves to the young officer who would never have survived the trip back to his cabin.
Although the Rabbi told him he had two pair, Mahoney later realized that Rabbi Goode would never have carried a spare pair of gloves.

The Chaplains took charge and organized rescue attempts. They directed men to life boats, helped them find life jackets and bestowed a little calm in all the chaos. In a very short time, water started flowing across the deck of the sinking ship. When the life jackets were gone, the four Chaplains took off their own life jackets and put them on the men around them.

With all hope gone and death certain, the survivors in the lifeboats heard, among the screams of horror, the voices of their Chaplains, raised in prayer.
The last sight of their ship included the four Chaplains, arms linked together and braced against the railings of the sinking ship, still praying, singing and giving strength to others.

“It was the finest thing I have ever seen this side of heaven,” said one of the survivors.

Twenty-seven minutes after the first torpedo struck, the USAT Dorchester disappeared from sight into the icy waters. Of the 920 men, only 230 survived. Six hundred seventy-two men, including the four Chaplains and crewmembers, went down with the ship.

George Fox was a Methodist minister, Clark Polling a Dutch Reformed minister, John Washington a Catholic priest and Alexander Goode a Jewish rabbi. Brothers in faith and the service of their fellowman, they will forever be American heroes.

The Branson Veterans Task Force is pleased to honor these men. Chaplains give so much of themselves and these four men made the ultimate sacrifice. Whatever our denomination, we all recognize faith, hope and love,” said Ernie Bradley, event coordinator and Vice-Chair of the Task Force. "New South," in Grand Jubille opening number.
left to right, Scott Leven, Trey Wilson, Jason
    Pritchett and Mark McCauley.

In describing the “Grand Jubilee Show,” the “Official Show Schedule for Branson.Com,” powered by the Branson Tourism Center, says, “The high energy and versatility of the entire cast astound audiences. From Country to Gospel and 50’s to modern day, the Grand Jubilee explodes with musical fun to satisfy any age.”A recent on line show review entitled “Grand Jubilee is ‘grand’ Branson entertainment” agrees.

The review starts off with the hypothetical question, “What do you get when you take one of the most talented quartets in Branson and combine it with a supporting cast of some of the best musicians in Branson and a multitalented comedian?” The answer was “A great show and a grand Branson entertainment experience called the “Grand Jubilee.’”

The article indicates that the Grand Jubilee show follows Branson’s traditional “variety show” format offering a combination of very funny comedy and great music. The various elements of the show, its featured quartet, “New South;” vocalists Todd Bradshaw and Jackie Brown; the Grand Band; an extremely funny comedian “Jim Dandy” and its Master of Ceremonies, Mike Patrick have a synergy resulting in one of the most entertaining two hours in Branson.

    Article Excerpts:

“New South,” …the featured element of the show.. beautiful harmonies on a variety of music is a wonderful musical entertainment experience in itself, but combine it with great costuming and production and their performance becomes part of a great entertainment experience.

[Grand Band] Their instrumentality, as demonstrated in virtually every number during the show, their solo performance of a Bluegrass LaLaPaLooza and featured performances in numbers such as “Kentucky River,” is outstanding.

Grand Jubilee’s comedy is provided by comedian “Jim Dandy,” played by Jamie Haage, with the assistance of the Master of Ceremonies and “straight man” Mike Patrick and it’s one funny laugh filled routine after another.

For additional information or tickets on the “Grand Jubilee” or any another Branson show, attraction or lodging please contact the Branson Tourism Center (BTC). • Branson area business preview of Ozark Mountain Spring

Branson area business owners have been thinking about spring for months. On Tuesday, Jan. 12, more than 15 presenters will preview dozens of special events planned for March through May at the OMS Community Presentation & Press Conference at 10 a.m. in the Keeter Center on the campus of College of the Ozarks.

Ozark Mountain Spring was selected as the way to package and publicize the many events taking place during those months, said Kathleen Bullock, Tourism Development Director for the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce. The goal was to identify the season, much like Ozark Mountain Christmas, a recognizable seasonal campaign which draws many visitors each year.“This is our second year building on the success of last year, and we’re running full steam ahead,” Bullock said.

One highlight of this spring’s events is Silver Dollar City’s 50th Birthday Celebration, and they’ll use the occasion to look toward the future, said spokeswoman Lisa Rau. That includes the new $7 million Tom & Huck’s River Blast attraction. “We have a responsibility to always grow the market, and to promote the past, present and future of Branson,” Rau said. “This water raft ride is the biggest water battle in America, and it harkens back to the mighty White River.”

A returning event is the Wal-Mart FLW Bass Fishing Tournament March 3-6, said fishing enthusiast Tate Womack, director of sales at the Jim Stafford Theatre. Last year, 150 fishing pros competed on Table Rock Lake for the top prize of $100,000. The weigh-in and awards held at the Branson Convention Center drew more than 12,000 people to the tourney’s Family Fun Zone featuring climbing walls, a chance to get the pros’ autographs, Branson entertainers and more, Womack said. “It was standing room only,” he said.

A first-time event is “See The World In Branson,” a project of the Branson Area Receptive Association. Area businesses select a country to highlight, and more than 27 are already making plans ranging from the Hughes Brothers’ tribute to their Scandinavian heritage to Australian cowboy music by Ricky Boen at the Hamner Barber Theatre.

It secured an unprecedented niche in Hollywood history after winning 11 Oscars.”

The TITANIC Movie Gallery offers a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes for a glimpse of the film’s hand-crafted props and set pieces and its beautiful costumes, including the famous red-beaded “jump” dress Rose was wearing when Jack kept her from jumping ship early in the film. There’s also the pink “sinking” coat Rose wore while rescuing Jack from the sinking ship, and the magnificent heart-shaped diamond and sapphire necklace that stole the show. Valued at more than $250,000, it boasts 325 diamonds totaling 16 carats that circle a stunning 155-carat sapphire. In addition, visitors are privy to behind-the-scenes videos, photos, provocative on-location stories and the actual shooting script Cameron used.

“During the holidays, we’ll be coming down to the wire as this great exhibit comes to a close. Be sure you catch this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” invites Joslyn, also the expedition leader of the first private exploration dive to Titanic’s wreck site.
The World’s Largest TITANIC Museum Attraction is the #1 permanent year-round family destination in Branson, Missouri. In operation for 3½ years, it has welcomed aboard almost 2,000,000 guests. The 17,000 square-foot ship-shaped structure is built half-scale to the original Titanic and towers more than 100 feet above its anchored position on Highway 76. A 90-minute self-guided or optional audio tour covers 20 galleries on two decks displaying more than 400 priceless artifacts that once belonged to Titanic passengers or crew.

As Branson, Missouri draws close to the end of its celebration of “50 years of live music shows” it is also celebrating “Ozark Mountain Christmas.” Paul Miller, General Manager for Branson Tourism Center (BTC), says, “Christmas is a special time of the year in Branson and one of the things that makes it special is its great Christmas shows.”

Miller points out that all most all of Branson’s shows incorporate Christmas into their shows, but in different ways. “Some, such as the “Spirit of Christmas,” “Andy Williams Christmas Show,” Toney Orlando and the Lennon Sisters” and “Miracle of Christmas” are primarily Christmas Shows. Most other Branson shows have a hybrid show with the best of their regular season and a Christmas portion. It is quite common to have the best of the regular season in the first half of the show with the second half.

A recent article published on line at www.news.Branson.Com, entitled “Personal capsule reviews of 12 Branson Christmas shows,” provides a personal capsule review of the show by show goers who have actually seen the show and have posted their opinion on line on the “Show Forum of www.1Branson.com. • Silver Dollar City’s “An Old Time Christmas”

The Holiday Light Parade" winds its way through
    Main Street.

Combining the traditions families treasure at Christmastime and spectacular elements of holiday lights, sounds and activities, Silver Dollar City presents its brightest season and one of the most acclaimed holiday festivals in America — An Old Time Christmas, November 7 – December 30. An Old Time Christmas transforms the 1880s-style theme park into an evening wonderland, featuring the Christmas on Main Street light and sound show throughout the park Square, 1,000 decorated Christmas trees, a Holiday Light Parade, the Broadway-style production A Dickens’ Christmas Carol, festive holiday foods and over four million lights.

The 5-Story Special Effects Christmas Tree is the park centerpiece, a towering visual icon that comes to life at dusk each evening when the Christmas on Main Street shows begin. During the shows, the massive tree blazes in synchronization to the musical movements of Christmas songs — up to 100 light changes per second — while lights on buildings, in hanging canopies over Main Street and on Christmas trees around the Square flash along with it, accompanied by surround-sound, immersing guests in the experience. While technologically incredible, the tree is “green” too, operating with energy-saving LED [Light-Emitting Diode.]

Many guests make it a tradition to see Silver Dollar City’s acclaimed production, A Dickens’ Christmas Carol, an original musical adaptation of the famous classic by Charles Dickens. The show is brought to life with elaborate sets and visual effects, flying spirits, pyrotechnic special effects and a talented cast of 14, accompanied by a live band.

In the two decades of the festival, Silver Dollar City’s An Old Time Christmas has become one of the country’s most recognized events for spectacular lighting and world-class entertainment. Profiled as one of the nation’s top holiday celebrations by USA Today, CNN Travel, The Travel Channel and Good Morning America, the festival features dazzling elements throughout the 100-acre park. The colorful Holiday Light Parade, with musical floats covered in lights, winds through the streets of the City each evening as accompanying costumed characters interact with kids along the parade route. Additional shows include a musical presentation of the Living Nativity and the interactive show Frosty that invites kids to help bring the legendary snowman to life.

Fine craftsmanship is also showcased, as the park’s 100 demonstrating craftsmen create one-of-a-kind handmade holiday items, from blown glass ornaments, angels and snowmen to hand-woven white oak baskets and Scotch-pine scented candles. Guests sing Christmas carols as they ride the Silver Dollar Steam Train and for nighttime thrills, most of the rides and the park’s five roller coasters are open after dark with great views of the lights from above.

During An Old Time Christmas, Silver Dollar City is open Thursdays through Sundays through December 20, plus Wednesday, November 25, and open daily December 26-30. Hours are 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. most days.

  • Branson Board’s opinion of celebrating Christmas in Branson

In Branson, Missouri, a town filled with exciting shows, shopping and things to do, it is really a tribute when people describe something as “magical,” “spectacular,” or “awesome.” Yet those are the words that the Branson Board used when responding to the question, “What are some of the top shows/attractions at Christmas time. I am particularly interested in hearing what Silver Dollar City and Dixie Stampede are like at Christmas.”

Now the “Board” replying to the question, was not the City of Branson Board of Alderman or the Board of the Chamber of Commerce, it was the members of the “Board,” more formerly known as the Forums on www.1Branson.com. Paul Miller, General Manager, Branson Tourism Center, points out that the Board, and the service it provides to potential Branson visitors by volunteers willing to share their knowledge of Branson, is just one indication of what a special experience a trip to Branson can be.

No exact count has been made of the how many members of the Board there are, but a large number of them have made hundreds of posts answering questions about Branson and trying to help people have a great Branson experience. It is primarily a volunteer effort and it is not unusual to get a response with minutes.

But, back to the Board’s response to the question presented by “motravelerken” (all Board members are anonymous and identified only by screen name). To keep things in context, the whole post read, “I have been to Branson in the summer but hear that Christmas in Branson is awesome. What are some of the top shows/attractions at Christmas time? I am particularly interested in hearing what Silver Dollar City [SDC] and Dixie Stampede are like at Christmas.”

As will become apparent and as wonderful and entertaining as Branson is during the rest of the year, Branson at Christmas is special. “Daytimer,” responds “You will love Branson at Christmas time. SDC is amazing, love to watch the big tree lights blinking to music and sipping on the hot chocolate with whip cream!!! Its just magical.” “Everything in Branson is just beautiful at Christmas. It is truly an old-fashioned Christmas. Just driving down the strip is spectacular,” says "Show Gal."

Show Gal also points out that “SDC is beautiful at Christmas. They have Christmas lights on everything that can possibly hold a strand of lights. My favorite time is just as it is beginning to get dark. You can still get a good view of all the buildings but the lights are bright enough to see. Dixie Stampede is decorated to the max. Shows and costumes are in the Christmas theme, along with their excellent no-hands meal.”

“PatiCake101” responds, “There really aren’t enough words to describe Silver Dollar City during the Christmas Season…it’s beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like it. There are millions of lights, and Christmas trees everywhere you look, with Christmas music galore, hot cider and wassail and smores made around a fire. The smells, the lights, the sounds, and the Christmas spirit that you feel as you enter the park..it’s simply magical. Magical!”
PatiCake101 continues, “The Dixie Stampede is also all decked out for Christmas. The meal is the same, but the atmosphere is “Christmassy” .with themed music, a live nativity and beautiful settings.” Branson Tourism Centers Paul Miller adds “Dixie Stampede will be debuting a bright new musical fantasy, for the 2009 Christmas season called “The Magic of Toys.”

In talking about their favorite Christmas shows PatiCake 101 says, “Andy Williams is one of our favorite Christmas shows, he’s kind of known as “Mr. Christmas.” The Dutton’s also have a great Christmas show, along with so many more to choose from. Miller concurs saying, “Branson has so many shows and almost every one of them will be decorated for Christmas and have Christmas as a prominent theme. He agrees wholeheartedly with PatiCake’s conclusion, “You just can’t help getting in the ‘spirit,’ I LOVE Branson at Christmas and it is my favorite time of year there.”

Miller reminds potential Branson visitors that Branson’s “Ozark Mountain Christmas” celebration, starting November 1 and running through December 31, particularly through December 15, is one of the busiest times of year the in Branson. He recommends advance reservations to insure getting the type of accommodations and show seating desired. In that regard Miller points out the Branson Tourism Center (BTC) is one of Branson’s largest and most respected vacation planning services and sellers of Branson show and

  • How to find just the right Branson show

The “good news” is that Branson, Missouri, often referred to as the “Live music show capital of the world,” has dozens of shows of every type and variety to pick from every day. The “bad news,” in terms of deciding which show to see and when, is that Branson has dozens of shows of every type and variety to pick from every day. How to pick the type of show one wants to see, a particular show or performer and a specific time can seem daunting, but help is available.

Just about every organization involved in tourism and selling Branson show tickets publishes a list of Branson shows. An excellent example of this type of list is the Branson Show Schedule published by the Branson Tourism Center (BTC), one of Branson’s largest and most respected vacation planning services and sellers of Branson show and attraction tickets and lodging, on its website www.BransonTourismCenter.com.

Like most Branson showschedules the BTC scheduloe is sorted alphabetically and contains a link to other information for the shows listed such as prices, an indication of whether or not the performance is a limited engagement and if the tickets are discounted all on the main page. In addition, the link from the main show entry for each show contains additional information such as the description of the show, schedules, pricing, pictures and, in a lot of cases, videos.

Although these types of schedules provide a lot of information, in most cases it will take additonal time and effort to research show times, types, prices and other information on a particular show. However, another feature of the Branson Tourism Center Show Schedule is the inclusion of an 800 telephone number, 1-800-785-1550, which will provide the assistance of a trained BTC Travel Specialist who will provide personal help in answering questions and getting Branson show information. There is no charge or obligation incurred for this assistance.

Another tool that can make it easy to get the information needed to make Branson show decisions and selections is provided by the search engines on web sites such as www.BransonOnTheWeb.com. This site enables the search of the dozens of Branson shows available in Branson on any given day to quickly and conveniently narrow the choices down to those meeting the needs of a specific visitor.

If a person was interested in comedy during the evening of October 15, finding just the right show is only a few clicks away. On the home page of www.BransonOnTheWeb.com, they would select the starting date of October 15, comedy, and a starting time of 6:00 p.m. from the appropriate drop down menus. From the 70 plus shows available in Branson on October 15 the search result will be a list of nine shows that are either comedy shows or feature comedy such as Jim Stafford, Presleys’ Country Jubilee, Pierce Arrow and Hamner and Barber to name a few. From that point finding the ideal comedy show to meet your needs will hopefully be a simpler process.

Paul Miller, General Manager for the Branson Tourism Center says, “With more people using the internet to get information and make travel decisions, we realize, with all the choices available in Branson, that many people will still want to talk with a real person. That’s why we provide the free no obligation assistance of a trained BTC Travel/Reservation Specialist through 800 numbers, 1-800-785-1550 for www.BransonTourismCenter.com and 1-800-785-1665 for www.BransonOnTheWeb.com.”

  • Branson’s Cassandre’ is a wonderful musical entertainment experience

Cassandre’ performing one of her stunning vocals.

A recent article published on line at Branson.com entitled “Cassandre’ and orchestra – continue Branson’s live music tradition in ‘angelic’ fashion,” noted that one of Branson’s newest shows, “Cassandre’ The Voice of An Angel,” is rich in the 50 year live music tradition that Branson is celebrating this year. The show features a nine person orchestra, the amazing vocals and stage personality of Cassandre’ Faimon-Haygood, and the comedy furnished by Cassandre’s alter ego, the voluptuous and very funny, “Aunt Erma.”

While acknowledging that the term “choreography” is normally used regarding dancing, the article explains why its use is appropriate to describe the arranging and creativity involved with this show. In an interesting twist, different elements of the orchestra are choreographed into Cassandre’s vocal performances to create a unique, beautiful and memorable musical entertainment experience unlike anything else in Branson.

    Excerpts from the article:

The result is a personable, beautiful, funny and entertaining show that truly exemplifies the very heart beat of live music through its rich orchestrations and powerful vocals.
It is obvious that a lot of thought has gone into the presentation of each number and how to best combine the vocal talents of Casssandre’ with the musicianship of the orchestra into a wonderful musical entertainment gem.

Cassandre’ is a top-notch vocalist …with a voice so flawless and a performance so effortless and compelling it is no wonder that watching her sing makes for a surreal theatrical experience! She is truly an enchanting soprano whose angelic voice can scale operatic heights, belt out Broadway hits, touch you with gospel inspiration, and rework pop classics in just the right balance!

If you love beautiful singing accompanied by a wonderful orchestra and want to have a laugh or two along the way you don’t want to miss this show.

  • Branson skies to be lit up by American Pyrotechnics Association

The American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) makes its way to Branson, MO, next week to hold its Annual Meeting and Convention. And what can you expect from the premier trade association of the fireworks industry holding its annual convention? Dazzling fireworks displays like none other and an amazing trade show where fireworks retailers, importers and suppliers show off their latest wares.

According to APA Executive Director, Julie L. Heckman, “We are delighted to bring our annual convention to Branson, where we have felt so welcome by that beloved mid-west Missouri spirit. Missouri is a fireworks-friendly state, allowing the full array of consumer fireworks which are stringently regulated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, for sale and use by the general public.”

During the APA convention, professional fireworks companies from all over the world (U.S., Canada, Mexico, China, Italy, Australia, Spain, United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Japan) will gather to learn the latest in safety, display design, choreography and regulatory requirements. They will hear from local speakers: Mayor Raeanne Presley, and Jim Hagale, CEO of Bass Pro Shops, on how the fireworks industry supports the local economy; and from U.S. Congress Representative, Roy Blunt, along with a variety of U.S. Federal regulators on legislative and compliance initiatives. “Most people only think about fireworks one day a year, July 4th, but the fireworks industry is an incredibly complicated and stringently regulated industry,” said Ms. Heckman.

In Branson, locals can enjoy two wonderful evenings of fireworks displays produced by APA members. Friday, September 25, 2009, APA members will be firing up the sky at The Branson Landing, a $425 million dollar waterfront shopping, dining and entertainment destination located in Historic Downtown Branson along the beautiful Lake Taneycomo. The evening’s festivities will kick off at 8:00 p.m. with a LIVE Concert featuring performances by Clay Cooper & The Clay Cooper Music Express Band with special guest STARS, Collin Raye, Barbara Fairchild, Dusty Rogers and the Liverpool Legends. What to look for: at approximately 9:15 p.m. a beautifully orchestrated “close proximity” / roof top fireworks display, choreographed to a lively “gaming” theme, and at 10:15 p.m. a grand fireworks finale on the waterfront fired from a barge featuring a tribute to “Beatles Love” – followed by an unforgettable live performance from the Liverpool Legends, who together provide the Ultimate Beatles Tribute Show. For more information about the fireworks event in partnership with The Branson Landing.

On Saturday, the APA will open its trade show to the general public (admission is free) from 9 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Hilton Branson Convention Center. And the big signature showcase, or APA’s fireworks finale, will occur on Saturday night at 9:45 p.m. at Moon Shine Beach (located near Table Rock Dam), fired over Table Rock Lake, in honor of the 50th Anniversary of Table Rock Dam. The Missouri Department of Transportation, Missouri Highway Patrol and U.S. Army Corp of Engineers will oversee access and parking in the area.

Ms. Heckman said, “We look forward to our time in Branson and we hope to delight the community with amazing fireworks that leave a lasting impression for all, fireworks at their finest! Please join us and see what the premier trade association of the fireworks industry, APA, has to offer.”

The APA is the leading trade association of the fireworks industry. The APA supports and promotes safety standards for all aspects of fireworks. The APA has a diverse membership including regulated and licensed manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, importers, suppliers and professional public display companies.

  • Cirque Montage in Branson for limited engagement

Feat of strength and balance performed by
    duo hand balancers.

The breadth of Branson entertainment will be expanding with the addition of “Cirque Montage” to its show schedule. The show has been described as an “exciting array of art, music, and skill uniting in a dazzling performance” and adds a new dimension of excitement to the Branson show scene.

During a phone interview, Judy Blake, one of the promoters of “Cirque Montage” said it is a production of Cirque Imagination, a company from Houston, Texas that represents former artists with “Cirque du Soleil’s Mystere, O, Sultimbanco, Alegria and Quidam. “Cirque Montage” is composed primarily of artists from those shows and is currently on a national tour.

After hearing about Branson and coming to Branson to see what it was all about Cirque Imagination decided to bring the show to Branson and introduce Branson audiences to the world of “cirque entertainment.” As a result Branson was added to the tour and “Cirque Montage” will start a two part, 16 performance limited engagement in Branson on September 13.

Blake said that in the typical cirque show there is a lot going on at the same time the artist is performing in terms of numbers of people on the stage special effects and other things. She calls Cirque Montage “cirque lite” in that it emphasizes and focuses on the individual artists themselves as they perform and display their incredible talents and skills.

She also pointed out that in most cirque type shows the performers do not speak or interact with the audience. In Cirque Montage that is not the case. Blake described Cirque Montage as more hands on and said, “It is so important that we connect with our audience.”

The show has been described as “A grand show of circus daring and skill.” Among other acts appearing in the show will be an aerial chiffon performer dangling from high above the stage, incredible contortionists transforming their bodies in ways never thought possible and pole climbers supporting themselves horizontally only by their wrists with nothing but twenty feet of air separating them from the floor.

The Cirque Montage schedule on the Branson Tourism Center (BTC) Show Schedule indicates it will perform eight performances the week of Sept. 13 and ten performances Nov. 29 through Dec. 5. For further information or tickets for Cirque Montage please call BTC, toll free, 1-800-875-1550 or see their web site www.BransonTourismCenter.com.

  • Everybody calls Branson fun

One of the exciting fun acts in the "Acrobats
of China" show performed by Ma Aili and it gets
higher and more exciting. Simply amazing fun.

As the Labor Day Weekend winds down and visitors prepare to leave Branson and go back home most realize what Jim Burgett, speaker, frequent traveler, and author realized when he wrote about and videoed Branson, “It is fun!” In the advertisement for his video entitled, “Branson: Magic In The Midwest,” Burgett, who has been to Branson over a dozen times, points out that it is one of the best places to take your family and that although some call it Little Vegas, everyone calls it fun!

He summarizes the main general types of activities available for visitors of all ages from Branson’s shows, its outdoor activities such as championship golfing, fishing boating and camping to its attractions, shopping, museums and theme parks. He points out that the bonus in Branson is that tickets are easy to get and the prices are very reasonable.

Paul Miller, General Manager, Branson Tourism Center, one of Branson’s largest and most respected vacation planning services and sellers of Branson show and attraction tickets and lodging, who is a 12 year veteran in helping Branson visitors said “That’s what the Branson experience is all about, having fun.” Paul pointed out that in Branson there is generally many choices for fun within each type of activity.

“Take fishing for example,” he said. “If you want to fish for Rainbow or Brown Trout there is Lake Taneycomo, one of the finest trout fisheries in the country, but if Large or Small Mouth Bass, Crappie, Catfish or other warm water species are your thing, two of the finest warm water fishing lakes in the country, Table Rock and Bull Shoals Lakes are minutes away.”

Golfing is yet another example of the choices available,” Paul said. “Branson provides golfing fun for every level of play,” He goes on to explain that from courses such as “Holiday Hills,” a more forgiving course, to championship courses such as “Branson Creek,” “Murder Rock,” “Thousand Hills,” and the newly refurbished “Pointe Royale,” there is challenging golfing fun in Branson for every golfer.

He also points out that Branson is sometimes referred to as “The Live Music Show Capital of the World” and for good reason, the fun available to Branson visitors provided by the number and variety of Branson’s shows. From shows like “Peter Pan,” “Righteous Brothers’ Bill Medley with Paul Revere & the Raiders,” “Acrobats of China,” Branson’s first show on the strip, “The Presleys’ Country Jubilee,” or Branson’s hottest show at the moment, “SIX,” Branson’s choice of live show fun is hard to beat.

“And the fun of Branson shows doesn’t stop there,” Paul said. There is the magic and comedy of “Hamner and Barber,” the great vocals and comedy of “Pierce Arrow,” the different comedic approaches taken to comedy by “Jim Stafford” or “Yakov,” the outdoor drama “The Shepherd of the Hills,” the biblical grandeur of “Noah the Musical,” the excitement and spectacle of “Dixie Stampede” or the fun and excitement provided by anyone of the up to 75 other shows presented on a daily basis in Branson.

Paul goes on to point out that from Branson’s world class award winning theme park “Silver Dollar City,” to museums from “The World’s Largest Toy Museum” to the “Titanic-the world largest museum attraction,” hiking, biking and a myriad of other attractions and activities there is fun at virtually every turn in Branson. “Nor,” he points out, “Is there any lack of shopping fun.” Shopping opportunities of all types, from the award winning “Branson Landing” on the shores of Lake Taneycomo to quaint specialty shops in its Historic downtown and throughout Branson abound.

In advertising her Branson “Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction” Dolly Parton says, “It is the most fun place to eat in Branson.” In terms of having fun, one could say, “Branson, Missouri is the most fun place to have fun in America.”

  • Gospel Sing-off for benefit of CAM Food Pantry

On Monday afternoon, September 7 at 2:00 p.m. a joyful sound will be raised to the Lord as the 12 finalists of the Branson Christian Action Ministries’ (CAM) Gospel Sing-Off compete for prizes from a $5,000 prize purse at the Sight and Sound Theatre in Branson. The joyfulness will be two fold, the singing and the occasion, a benefit for CAM’s food pantry.

CAM Executive Director, Joan Westfall pointed out that the CAM Gospel Sing-Off is one of the major fund raisers for the CAM Food Pantry which helped 11,686 people last year. Of those, over 4,000 were children. In a recent interview Westfall pointed out that the need for CAM’s services are growing at a record pace this year.
She pointed out that all the money raised through the benefit will go directly to the CAM Food Pantry. She said that is possible because of all the volunteer work that has gone into the event, Sight and Sound Theatre has donated the theatre for the event and the $5,000 cash prize purse was donated by the Branson Tourism Center.

In sponsoring the $5,000 prize purse, Lianne Milton, co-owner of Branson Tourism Center (BTC) said, “CAM’s work and its Food Pantry directly impacts on the lives of thousands of people, a lot of them children, within our local community.” Lianne explained that Branson Tourism Center’s sponsorship of the prize purse for this major CAM fund raising effort is intended to support that work and is part of BTC’s ongoing commitment and involvement with its community.

The 12 finalists and one alternate were selected by a committee headed by veteran Branson show producer, Joe Sullivan, based on audio, video and other material submitted by the prospective contestants. The event will be emceed by Bob Hubbard, formerly with the Foggy River Boys and the Jordanaires. The judges deciding who will win the first place prize of $2,500, second place prize of $1,500 and third place prize of $1,000 will be Lee Loughnane, founding member of the legendary rock group Chicago, Ben Dutton of Branson’s Dutton Family and Mark Wright, Director of Benevolence for the James River Assembly in Ozark.

Tickets are $10.00 and may be purchased at the Sight and Sound Theatre box office or call 1-800-377-1277.

  • Branson’s Dixie Stampede – food, fun excitement and adventure on a grand scale

Roman rider jumps his horses through the
    Hoops of Fire.

Branson, Missouri is no stranger to either live shows or live entertainment, but, as Paul Miller, General Manager for the Branson Tourism Center, one of Branson’s largest and most respected vacation planning services and sellers of Branson show and attraction tickets and lodging, said, “Even in Branson ‘Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction’ stands out.”

The fun starts as people walk from the parking lot to the main entrance and pass by the “real stars” of the show, the horses in their stalls. The fun and anticipation of what is to come continues to build during the "Pre Show” in the Carriage Room.

It is an exciting fast paced fun filled show presented by David Lucas, a very talented entertainer who keeps the comedy coming as he tells jokes, plays the banjo and juggles everything from hoops to silk scarves and machetes. His ability to weave his humor into his fabulous juggling routines not only keeps all ages of the audience entertained, but builds anticipation and excitement for what is to follow in the main auditorium. Tiger Woods is pretty good with a golf club and ball however, it is doubtful that even he can make them do what Lucas does on his last routine.

Right after the preshow the audience enters the main 85,000 square foot area where they go to their seats and have their first contact with the show, their server. At Dixie Stampede the server is an integral part of the show and does more than merely serve food. They provide a lot of the excitement that makes up the Dixie Stampede entertainment experience. From her pleasant greeting, great service, interaction with our group to her spirited participation during the competition, Jennifer, our server, did an outstanding job and added to the fun, spirit and enjoyment of the evening in a big way.

The grand finale provides a spectacular and
patriotic end to a great evening of entertainment.
    and fun.

The Master of Ceremonies comes out mounted on a beautiful black Friesian horse and, in an entertaining manner, explains that after dinner there will be friendly competition between the North and South, lets folks know what side they are on and then spends some time getting the sides excited and stirred up for the competition that is to come. As he introduces the armies the nonstop fun and excitement begins with marching armies and thundering Calvary.

After the introduction of the armies and some fast paced maneuvers by the Calvary of the North and South there is a wonderful show taking the audience back to the very early days of the early west. It starts with animals grazing on a surreal plain before there were any humans and evolves through a heard of a heard of long horn cattle and the settlers moving in with their wagons. In between there is a beautiful act involving the Native American culture, a medicine man and the “Spirit of the Bird, a spectacular aerialist who soars high above the arena, in a performance that is poignant, beautiful, exciting, and graceful that will be remembered by audience members of all ages for a long time.

As the settlers move in and set up camp the servers start serving the food and there is plenty of it. No one with a normal appetite should leave Dixie Stampede hungry. Dinner consists of a whole mouth watering chicken, delicious hickory smoked barbecued pork loin, Dixie Stampede’s Original Creamy Vegetable Soup, Scrumptious Homemade Biscuit, Hot Buttered Corn on the Cob, Tasty Herb Basted Potato, Dixie’s very own Specialty Dessert and unlimited Pepsi, tea, or coffee. There is a vegetarian menu available if requested when the reservations are made.

As dinner is being served the entertainment continues nonstop with some of the most beautiful horses and skilled riders performing some of the most amazing feats of horsemanship most people will ever see. From Roman Riding and jumps through fiery hoops to racing buck boards and trick riding of many different types, the show is amazing. This pesky guy “Skeeter” keeps showing up and when he does get ready for some surprises and laughter because Skeeter doesn’t do “serious.

After the show and meal the competition begins with a number of different events. Some are done between the competing North and South Calvary, others such as the chicken chase and toilet seat competitions involve participants from the audience and still others involve racing pigs and miniature horses, but all just add to the fun, excitement and adventure that is Dixie Stampede.

The competition between North and South came down to the last action packed event involving the entire audience. The excitement crackled throughout the audience almost to a fever pitch as they endeavored to get victory for their side but, alas, on this night where both North and South won in terms of fun and excitement, the North was victorious.

The finale is a spectacular red white and blue patriotic salute with fireworks, riders and horses with luminous costumes and the Flying Doves of Peace. It is all set and conducted to the a song “Color Me America” written by Dolly Parton. What an end to a great evening of fun, excitement, adventure and entertainment.

Walking back to the car right after the performance the words of Dolly Parton from her Dixie Stampede advertisements came to mind, “My Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction is the most fun place to eat in Branson.” Those might just be the truest words that have ever appeared in an advertisement.

  • Gene Williams to be inducted George D. Hay Music Hall of Fame

Gene Williams, Loretta Lynn, Dot Rhodes and Mike Snider will be inducted into the George D. Hay Music Hall of Fame, named for the man who created the Grand Ole Opry. Williams said, “I am honored to be included in the 2009 induction group along with country icon Loretta Lynn, Dot Rhodes, entertainer and wife of Hall of Fame member Dusty Rhodes, and Mike Snider, an extraordinarily talented musician in country music.”

The George D. Hay Music Hall of Fame and Foundation, located in Mammoth Spring, Ark., honors the memory of George D. Hay, who credited a hoe down in the town as the inspiration for his creation of the Grand Ole Opry. Both the hall of fame and foundation have the support and encouragement of Hay’s daughter, Margaret Hay-Van Damm.

“The (George D. Hay Music) Hall of Fame induction, by foundation selection, is a means of recognizing rare individuals who have played an outstanding and enduring role in the world of country music. Your musical history and career set you apart as one such individual,” said Bob Ross, president and 2009 awards chair of the hall and the foundation. The induction will be conducted during the 13th Annual George D. Hay Music Hall of Fame and Hoe Down Awards Show on Sept. 20 at the George D. Hay Music Hall of Fame Theater in Mammoth Spring, Ark.

In Williams’ nomination biography, Ross wrote, “Gene is a man who strives to keep alive the spirit of country music for all music fans.” Williams’ fans recently presented him with a Gold Record for the #1 classic country music show in America. Williams has been honored by his hometown with a road named after him following a 2007 key to the city presentation and a historical marker recognizing his support to help preserve the town’s history. A historical building in Dyess will be a museum recognizing former residents, Johnny Cash, Tommy Cash and Williams. He was grand marshal in the first Dyess Christmas Parade in 2008.

The Gene Williams Country Music TV Show was featured in the June 2009 issue of Better Homes and Gardens as a nostalgia experience in a live television show. For the past eight years the show has been taped in Branson live before a studio audience. Guests have included Mickey Gilley, who is his current announcer, the Oak Ridge Boys, Roy Clark, Johnny Lee, Barbara Fairchild, Sons of the Pioneers, Johnny Cash’s band The Tennessee Three, the Blackwood Brothers, Helen Cornelius, Leona Williams, Charlie Louvin, Mary Lou Turner, Cal Smith, Stonewall Jackson, Norma Jean, Porter Wagoner, Jim Owen, Buck Trent, Wanda Jackson and many more.

Over the past five decades, his TV shows have won numerous awards and become the largest syndicated country music TV show not affiliated with Nashville. The show was rated as the most popular TV show in national ratings by WNGF Buffalo Broadcasting of New York and as a favorite TV show in a national magazine. Williams even helped Dr. Phil make a dream come true for one of his guests by making him a feature country singer on Williams’ show.
Williams’ television career led to his making two movies, Country Music Jamboree and Sound of Country Music that starred more than 39 Grand Ole Opry stars. He has worked with such greats as Johnny Cash, the Carter Family, the Statler Brothers, Carl Perkins, Charlie Walker, Charlie Louvin, Del Reeves, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Minnie Pearl and Jack Greene.

  • Yakov’s Moscow Circus is a fairy tale of exciting family fun

Twirling fire bolos are just one of the many
reason why Yakov’s Moscow circus is such
    "hot" entertainment for Branson audiences.

As Branson celebrates 50 years of live music shows it is amazing to consider the variety of entertainment those shows offer. Branson shows have it all, from all genres of music, to comedy of all sorts, outdoor drama, magic, thundering horses, and now, during a limited engagement, the action and excitement of Yakov’s Moscow Circus.

The show’s story line is an original fairy tale, narrated on video by Yakov Smirnoff. It is a tale of relationships, love between sisters, young love found, betrayal, redemption, and, as would be expected in a happy fairy tale ending.

The fairy tale is set in the exciting environment of a Russian Circus and, as it unfolds, is artfully woven around the acts in the circus and its characters. From graceful performance on the aerial hoop high above the stage to the final act, a beautiful and exciting combination adagio dance and aerial silk act, Yakov’s Moscow Circus is constant action, variety and entertainment for the whole family.

Unicyclist Anthony Soumiatin is a U.S. National Unicycling Champion and after seeing his act it is apparent why. It’s exciting enough watching him perform one feat after another during his regular unicycle performance, but things go up to a much higher level when he switches over to the seatless unicycle. His jump from one seatless unicycle to the other, virtually a “wheel to wheel jump” is one of the most amazing feats of coordination and agility a person is likely to see.

The performance of Irina Markova’s dogs and cat was a big hit with the audience. Not only was their performance exciting and active, but the costuming, particularly having the dogs come out costumed a lions added a lot to the excitement and color of the act.

From Russian dancing to a touch of classical ballet and adagio dancing, juggling, whips spitting out fire, fire twirling and children in bubbles, this is one circus with something for everyone. Andre the Clown is the common denominator that keeps the action and excitement of the circus rolling from one segment to the other. Whether it’s juggling, plungers, comedy or just clowning around and interacting with the audience, Andre becomes the crowd’s direct interface with the excitement and adventure of circus.

Perhaps the best way to sum up Yakov’s Moscow Circus would be from some of the recent comments made on the “Shows Forum” of Branson biggest message board, www.1Branson.com. One commenter said, “My family and I went and saw the Moscow Circus @ Yakov’s theater last night [August 22]. All I can say is ‘Wow’. What an amazing show. It was a circus and a show tied into one venue. I highly recommend this show to anyone.” Another comment that specifically speaks to those with families is “It’s something that will entertain adults and children equally…!”

Yakov’s Moscow Circus will complete a limited engagement performance at the Yakov Smirnoff Theatre with its last performance on September 7. For information or tickets for Yakov’s Moscow Circus or any other Branson show or attraction please call the Branson Tourism Center toll free at 1-800-875-1550 or contact them through their website www.BransonTourismCenter.com.

  • $12k donation gets 18 holes with Andy Williams or Paul Revere

It has been called a “once in a life opportunity” by Bill Tirone, director of sales and marketing for Hiltons of Branson, the company that handles the management of the new Payne Stewart Golf Club in Branson. According to Tirone, the opportunity is referring to a special package that includes the chance to play an 18 hole round of golf with Andy Williams for a $12,000 donation to the Boys and Girls Club of the Ozarks.

This special package includes more than just a round of golf. In addition to the round of golf with Williams the package also includes limousine service, two tickets to the Andy Williams Show, dinner at the Andy Williams Moon River Grill and two nights in the Presidential Suite on the top floor of the Hilton Branson Convention Center Hotel.

Information publicizing the fundraising effort quotes Williams as saying, “I’ve always supported the Boys and Girls Club, as long as I can remember.” “I think it’s one charity that you can actually see the good that comes from supporting the club, and its effect on young people. I’ve been involved in the Boys and Girls Club in Coachella Valley, Calif., for a long time also, and I support the Boys and Girls Club nationally as well.”

Tirone came up with the fund raising idea for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Ozarks and Williams, who is an avid golfer, agreed. Tirone said there is only one package with Williams unless he agrees to do additional packages. He explained that all requests for the package will be processed through him because of the coordination necessary to ensure that Williams and the presidential suite will be available on the desired dates. When asked what happens if more than one person offers to donate, Tirone indicated they will be handled in order of receipt and ability to coordinate with Williams schedule.

Tirone said that a similar package is also available with Paul Revere for a similar $12,000 donation. Paul Revere & the Raiders are currently appearing with the Righteous Brothers’ Bill Medley at the Andy Williams Moon River Theatre through October 24. For information or donations regarding the packages with either Andy Williams or Paul Revere, Tirone should be contacted at 417-243-3410

Paul Miller, General Manager of the Branson Tourism Center said that Williams is known locally for his generosity and efforts to help the local community and its charities. He reminds people that Williams will be performing in Branson for the first time this year with his “Variety Show” in the Moon River Theatre during the entire month of September. He will be performing the famous “Andy Williams Christmas Show” from November 1 through December 7. “To ensure availability,” Miller suggests making advance reservations as far in advance as possible.

  • Home-Cooking and Music at Silver Dollar City’s Southern Gospel Picnic

(Branson, MO 08/09) From traditional quartet harmonies to upbeat country and bluegrass, Silver Dollar City‘s Southern Gospel Picnic presents the top performers in gospel music along with hearty home-cooking served up picnic-style. The festival features 12 days of soul-stirring songs from Dove Award winners, Hall of Famers, top recording artists and up-and-coming groups, with over 300 performances during the festival, August 27 – September 7.

“The Southern Gospel genre has changed from being exclusively quartet-focused to including family groups, trios and even bluegrass and country groups, and we’ve got the favorites in all categories,” says SDC festival coordinator, D.A. Callaway. “The common thread is that it’s all uplifting – praise music from the heart, guaranteed to lift your spirits, make you tap your feet and clap along.”

Featured traditional artists include multiple Dove Award winners The Kingsmen, Gold City, Brian Free & Assurance and The Booth Brothers, plus phenomenally popular groups and Dove Award winners Jeff & Sheri Easter, Karen Peck and New River and Mike & Kelly Bowling. Contemporary artists include 2008 Dove winners The Isaacs and Austins Bridge. Another crowd favorite, Callaway says, is the Reggie Saddler Family, led by former R&B artist Reggie Saddler who performed with artists from Jerry Lee Lewis to the Drifters before entering the gospel music ministry. Performances throughout the day are followed by Southern Gospel Nights concerts each evening in the park’s 4,000-seat amphitheater.

New this year, worship services on Sunday, Sept. 6 will feature The Lesters and minister/humorist Dr. Dennis Swanberg. Swanberg’s humor is also showcased in several performances, and comedic performers include Aaron Wilburn, Tim Lovelace and Roy Webb.
Nothing pairs with Southern Gospel music better than favorite picnic foods. • Neal McCoy in Branson means pure nonstop entertainment

Neal McCoy entertaining the audience up
    close and personal.

What’s two hours of nonstop fun, action, entertainment excitement, and music presented by one of the most personable entertainers around? It just might be the Branson edition of the Neal McCoy Show at the Yakov Smirnoff Theatre.

Neal has received the Entertainer of the Year award twice, won Video of the Year, has three Platinum Albums, one Gold album and nine number one hits and is one of the legends of country music. Yet, in responding to the question, “What one thing do you want potential Branson audiences coming to your show to know about the show he said, “We want the folks who come to our show to know that we’re here to entertain them. I’m not coming to show you how good I can sing or how good my band is. We’re here to make sure you’re part of the show and that you have enjoyed yourself when you leave.”

In his typical down to earth style he went on to say, “Not everyone is a Neal McCoy fan” and acknowledged that “Not everyone knows who Neal McCoy is so we are going to do something that you are going to like, something that will bring you into our show and once you’re in you are really going to enjoy it.”

That just might be the understatement of the year. From the time the curtain went up, until the show was over about two hours later, it was pure entertainment. The band was excellent, his singing was great, but it was Neal’s innate ability to do just what he said he would do, “bring the audience into the show” and to do it so completely that it added immeasurably to the entertainment experience of the audience.

The audience knows it’s going to be a different kind of show when a two time country music entertainer of the year starts the show off, not with one of his own hits, but with two country classics like “Smile” and “Fly me to the Moon.” Now the more astute reader might say, “But those aren’t country classics.” Exactly and that is the point, “Smile” was a Nat King Cole Classic and “Fly Me to the Moon” is another classic by Frank Sinatra.

In fact the show is so different that Neal and the band don’t really know exactly what will be in it from night to night because there is no play list, the list that most bands use to know what song is coming next. Neal said, “Only the first two songs are scripted” and after that they just go with the flow. It was about ten minutes before show time and I asked, “What will the first two scripted numbers be?” He replied, “I don’t know, we decide just before we go on.”

There was a variety of music for every taste with a lot of Neal McCoy signature songs such as “Wink,” “The Shake,” “They’re Playin’ Our Song” and many of his other signature hits. There was also a lot of music covering a wide range of musical interests such as the Eddie Arnold song, “You Don’t Know Me,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face,” from the musical “My Fair Lady” and a “rapish style” combination of “The Ballad of Jed Clampett” and “Day-O” to mention a few.

But here’s the kicker, it was not just the fact of the music, it was the entertaining manner in which virtually each piece was presented. It wasn’t just someone sitting up there or walking across a stage singing songs. There was some interaction with the band or audience on virtually each piece. In one case it was the integration of the fiddle player Steve Auburn, into Neal’s performance of “The City Put the Country Back in Me,” for others it was telling a humorous story or joke or bantering with the audience from either the stage or down with the audience.

From his first step on stage until his last number he gives the impression that he is interested in doing nothing else but give the audience a great entertainment experience. It is something that is more easily felt than seen however, it is a wonderful thing to experience and makes the Neal McCoy show the unique, exciting and memorable entertainment experience that it is.

Becky Priest performing a beautiful rendition
of "In the Arms of An Angel."

His band is fantastic and consists of Becky Priest, Keyboard; Lester Estelle Jr., Drums; Steve Auburn, Fiddle/Mandolin; Tommy Nash and Darryl Preston, Guitar and Jeremy Worden Bass. They fit right in with the blend and variety of music Neal performs and the way he interacts with them. Some highlights of individual band moments are Tommy Nash’s guitar playing during Neal’s performance of “I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face,” the short duet of “Maidens Prayer” by Tommy and Steve Auburn and the simple eloquent solo presentation of “In The Arms of An Angel” sung and played by Becky Priest.

After seeing the show, Branson Mayor, Raeanne Prelsey described Neal as a “fresh, electric, multi-talented entertainer” and a “great addition to the Branson scene.” Another person who had seen the show said, “He is not only a great entertainer, he really is pretty darn funny!” After seeing the show this writer would agree with those assessments and add, “Neal McCoy is a person that loves what he does, entertaining people, and does it so well he provides an entertainment experience that goes beyond hearing mere music, fun and excitement and touches the heart to be remembered for years to come."

  • Country Tonite with T.G. Sheppard is “Timeless” country music excitement

Country Tonite vocalists, left to right, Kenya Wilhite,
Jason Froeschle, Kim Barber, and David Griffin.

New country or old country, Branson’s Country Tonite Show with guest star T G. Sheppard is pure country presented with energy, enthusiasm and talent that is amazing. The power of this show is in the voices of its vocalists, skill and grace of its dancers, the musicality of its live band and the way it has been choreographed into a unique and exciting country music experience.

The first half of the show and the finale was presented by the Country Tonite Show cast and is basically the first half of the show they present when they do not have a guest star for the second half of the show. The “Timeless” country music star, T.G. Sheppard was the guest star for the second half of the show.

Country Tonite’s four vocalists, David Griffin, Jason Froeschle, Kenya Wilhite, and Kim Barber did an excellent job on a variety of country favorites. Although there were many opportunities to hear their considerable talents throughout the show two were especially memorable. One was their participation in the all cast performance of “Rocky Top” and the other was the back to back medleys of “Classic” and “Contemporary Country” during which their individual vocal versatility was displayed one after the other.

The dancing skills of the shows six dancers Bristol Sosa, Jenn Turner, Jill Perry Fitzpatrick, Tim Ehrenberg, Todd Coker and Stephen Feemster were evident as they added the dynamic of their dancing to the country music experience that is Country Tonite. The dancing has been choreographed into the performance in a manner that enhances the overall entertainment experience. In some cases it is subtle and in other cases, as illustrated by the clogging number and the beautiful solo dancing of Todd Coker during the vocal performance of “Home” by Kim Barber, it is a major element of the performance.

The musicians in the Country Tonite show are some of the finest Branson has to offer. Directed by Marty Wilhite who is also the bass player, the musicians of Country Tonite are Randy Luna, keyboard, Nathan Agdeppa, fiddle, Gene Mulvaney on the steel guitar Casey Smith, drums and Mike McAdoo on guitar. Simply said, it would be hard to beat the musicianship and versatility of these musicians as they performed for both the Country Tonite and T.G. Sheppard segments of the show.

    in Branson, Missouri.

The second half of the show was presented by the “Timeless” country music legend, T.G. Sheppard whose career started in the late 70s and early 80s with a string of dozen number one hits and continues today with the launch of his newest album “Timeless” and an extensive road schedule. Using the musicians of the Country Tonite show, T.G. performed number after number of his hit signature songs such as “Slow Burn,” “Last Cheater’s Waltz,” “Do You Wanna Go To Heaven,” Party Time,” “Only One You,” his all-time favorite, “Finally” and many more.

During an interview earlier in the day, in the reception lobby of the Branson Tourism Center, T.G. was asked, “What one thing would you like people who are considering attending your show to know?” Without hesitation he said, “What any performer would want people to know, that you’re the real deal, sincere, love your music, performing it and what you do.”

As T.G. performed, he not only delivered every song with enthusiasm, energy and excitement, but established a personal rapport with his audience by interacting with them in a manner that was genuine and sincere. It is a joy to watch a master entertainer work, interact with the audience and get them involved in their own entertainment experience. T.G. Sheppard’s performance is a testimony to the fact that he’s “the real deal.”

It’s hard to envision anyone caring about country music that would not have a fabulous entertainment experience at this show. T.G. Sheppard will be appearing with Country Tonite at the Oakridge Boys Theatre in Branson Tuesday through Saturday until August 20 and again October 20-24.

  • Why use a Branson vacation planning service?

Probably no place on earth has a choice of more things to do within a smaller geographical area than Branson, Missouri the live music show capital of the world. From lakes to golfing and a choice of attractions, live shows, entertainment, restaurants and shopping that most destination cities of Branson’s size can only dream about, the choices are virtually endless. How does a potential Branson visitor, particularly one who has never been to Branson before, narrow those choices down?

One way is for the visitor to do it themselves by phone, email, or the internet. In a lot of cases this will result in more choices and questions than the person started with. It will definitely involve the investment of time to contact each of the different theatres, attractions, or lodging options the person may be interested in to check on availability, prices, make reservations, and get the answers to any questions they may have etc.

Another way is to use the services of a business providing Branson vacation planning services and selling the show and attraction tickets, lodging, and other Branson services necessary to make the plan a reality. This one stop type of service can save time, frustration, money, help insure availability and good seating at shows and is an easy convenient way to start a pleasurable Branson experience.

Paul Miller, General Manager, Branson Tourism Center (BTC), one of Branson’s largest and most respected providers of vacation planning services, show and attraction tickets and lodging says “One of the primary reasons people use vacation planning services is convenience.”

Miller explained that in the case of BTC, the person would make one toll free call to 1-800-875-1550. At that point they will be dealing with a trained BTC Travel Specialist who lives in the Branson area, can help them get the answers to any questions they might have and will assist them with arrangements for shows, attractions, lodging or other Branson travel services. As but one example of the level of convenience BTC provides Miller said, “We can even make specific tee time reservations for golfers so all they have to do is show up and enjoy their round of golf.”

“One of the primary questions people have about dealing with a vacation planning service,” Miller says is, “How do we know we are dealing with a reputable business?” He suggests checking with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and points out that the Branson Tourism Center is an accredited member of the BBB. The BBB of Southwest Missouri located in Springfield, Missouri, its phone number is 417-862-4222 and its website is www.southwestmissouri.bbb.org/.

Miller points out that another major concern people have is any additional fees charge by the businesses providing the vacation planning services. He advises that some services do have additional fees and service charges that are added. He said the best way to find out is to ask early in the process. Branson Tourism Center has no service charge or fee of any kind. The prices shown on their website www.BransonTourismCenter.com are inclusive of all taxes, include no service charges or fees and are the actual price the customer pays.

“Will we get good seats or lodging accommodations?” is another question commonly asked. Miller explained that BTC enjoys and excellent relationship with all the theatres, attractions, and lodging facilities it deals with and employees over 45 Travel Specialists. He said that combination will result in its customers getting some of the best seats and accommodations available. He stresses however, “The earlier reservations are made, particularly during the busier times of the year, such as Ozark Mountain Christmas, the better the chances are to get the best seats and accommodations.”

Miller said the services of a vacation planning service such as Branson Tourism Center allows Branson visitors to spend more of their time enjoying the Branson experience. Branson Tourism Center can be reached by calling 800-785-1550 or by clicking here to visit their website www.BransonTourismCenter.com.

  • Branson’s SIX plus zero equals an amazing “10”

    SIX perofrming 50’s medley.

It’s all true the Branson show SIX is the real deal. The SIX very talented brothers present a show that is unique, amazing, personable and one of the most entertaining shows in all of Branson. It is playing to packed house just about every night.

The evening of July 22 was no different and by the end of their performance it was apparent why. The audience, from the more mature to teens just loved SIX. One gentleman from Illinois, looking to be in his late 50s to mid 60s, sitting next to me with four other people pretty well summed things up when he said, “That knocked my socks off.”

Most have heard the old adage "What you see is what you get.” However, the uniqueness of SIX is proof positive that is not true. What you see for the whole show is six of the ten Knudsen brothers Kevin, Curtis, Barry, Owen, Lynn, and Jak. What you don’t see is any live band or acoustical support of any kind, but what you will hear sounds like an accompanying band.

SIX’s advertising says, “You have to see it to believe it,” “Your eyes won’t believe your ears” and “You won’t believe what comes out of their mouths.” Having seen and heard SIX all that can be said is is “You do have to see it to believe it.”

What you will see are SIX brothers singing A cappella, but what you will heard is SIX brothers singing A cappella plus accompanying instruments. Even though the audience is aware of what to expect, as one is sitting in the audience, watching and hearing SIX perform, they find themselves looking for the drummer and the accompaniment. Of course there is none.

The uniqueness of SIX’s act obviously sets them apart however, if that was all there was it is doubtful SIX could be enjoying the success they are. What is as amazing as the uniqueness of their presentation is the quality of their voices, both as individuals and in combination. From their opening number, “Beautiful Day,” to their closing number, “God Bless the USA,” about two hours later, their powerful voices, energy, and familial blessed harmonies provide a musical treat that is special on its own.

Their music covers all types from Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Motown, to gospel, the 50’s and much more. The group’s humor is seamlessly woven into their presentation and the show just flows from one number to the next. In one case they present one of the most beautiful renditions of the Frank Sinatra classic “My Way” and in another the pace changes to a humorous presentation of Wayne Newton’s signature song “Danke Schoen.”

SIX provides about two hours of the most exciting and unique entertainment available in Branson or anywhere else, presented by SIX great entertainers who are dedicated to providing their audience with an unforgettable entertainment experience. The proof of their success is the packed houses they are playing to just about every night. Paul Miller, General Manager, Branson Tourism Center advises that tickets for this show be purchased as far as possible in advance to insure availability for specific dates.

Simply put, SIX is a very special Branson entertainment experience that should not only not be missed, but shared. It truly is a situation where SIX plus zero not only equals “10,” but perhaps a perfect “10.”

Jason Michael Carroll & Gloriana will be appearing on August 14 at the Tri-Lakes Center. With songs like his Top 5 debut single, “Alyssa Lies,” and his beautiful new ballad, “Hurry Home" Carroll’s country music star is rising rapidly. The group Gloriana, consisting of four uniquely talented and enthusiastic young musicians combine to produce what has been described as “a fresh, one-of-a-kind sound that reflects the best of today’s Nashville and is an exciting new and vibrant force in country music.”

Miller said, “And that’s just the limited engagements between now and the end of August.” He went on to point out that, in the months of September through December the following limited engagements are scheduled to perform in Branson: Ray Price, Collin Raye, Cirque Montage presented by Cirque Imagination, Lee Greenwood and the Bellamy Brothers, Roy Clark, The Gatlin Brothers, Dionne Warwick and B.J. Thomas, Cathy Rigby staring in Peter Pan, The Oak Ridge Boys, Merle Haggard with Jack Green, Pam Tillis and John Anderson, 3 Rednecked Tenors , Johnny Mathis, Marty Stewart and Connie Smith, The Conway Twitty Musical Tribute Show, Daniel O Donnell, Tony Orlando & the Lennon Sisters Christmas Celebration, Debby Boone, Brule and AIRO (American Indian Rock Opera), Country’s Family Reunion featuring Bill Anderson, Jeannie Sealy, Jim Ed Brown, and Helen Cornelius, Mark Lowery and the Charlie Daniels Band.

Miller suggests contacting the Branson Tourism Center by phone at 1-800-875-1550 or through their website www.BransonTourismCenter.com for additional information or to purchase tickets for any of these limited engagement performances. He advises going to the 2009 Show Schedule on the site where specific information can be obtained for each of the limited engagements mentioned in this article and Branson’s other shows.

  • “Rock U Mentally LIVE” a unique gem for families to share

Cast, left to right, Bucky Herd, Chris Skillern,
Angie Skillern, A.J Herd and Ken Brown
introducing theRock U Mentally motto "Don’t
    Stand By, Stand Up."

When Branson’s newest show, “Rock U Mentally LIVE” was first announced, it was described as “a hip educational musical adventure for kids of all ages.” The show is now a few performancesinto its limited engagement run at Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theater and it is all that and then some.

As Branson celebrates the 50th anniversary of live music shows “Rock U Mentally LIVE” adds a unique, exciting, educational and inspirational element of entertainment to the Branson show scene. On any given day, the online show schedule for Branson Tourism Center, www.BransonTourismCenter.com, one of Branson’s largest providers of show and attraction tickets, would show 70 or more shows available for Branson visitors, but in terms of subject matter, presentation and appeal “Rock U Mentally” stands alone.

Its design, music, subject matter and presentation has produced an exciting fun filled kids show. But, from its original music, to the performance of the cast and the way it relates to their young audience and the shows flow from one educational and inspirational “Rock U Mentally” moment to another, it is obvious that the show has been developed and is being presented by some very grown up people who have a passion for what they are doing.

The basic block of the show is the “Rock U Mentally Motto.” Each motto, with its special educational message for kids is introduced by an entertaining, well designed and presented skit. During the skits the audience gets to meet some interesting characters like “Big Al the Alligator” “Ben the Recycle Bag,” the “Mad Professor” and of course “Honey Bee” as she vies to become the mascot of Rock U Mentally.

The message, motto, is presented in the skit then reinforced through the presentation of original music and dancing. Adding to the excitement and kids appeal is the costuming, some neat special effects, and the use of video. Although there is a lot going on, it all flows seamlessly and provides a great entertainment experience for the kids while teaching them about some pretty neat things such as how important they are, air and water pollution, safety, cooperation and recycling.

The cast of Chris Skillern, Angie Skillern, Bucky Herd, A.J. Herd, Ken Brown, and magician Jon Hickstein do an excellent job. Although Chris, Angie, and Bucky primarily sing and A.J. and Ken dance they all work together and interact in a way that holds the rapt attention of the children. It was a joy sitting in the back of the theatre, not only watching them perform, but seeing and sensing the reaction of the children in the audience to what was being presented. It is hard to imagine a parent or grandparent not having a very special time sharing this show with their child or grandchild and watching their excited reaction as they have fun and learn.

Rock U Mentally LIVE’s limited Branson engagement will end on August 15. For information or tickets for this show please call 1-800-875-1550 or click here.

  • Family Savings on Branson shows

One of the reasons Branson is celebrating 50 years of live music shows this year is because of the great quality and value of the shows that Branson offers. Although ticket prices in Branson are a great value, Branson Tourism Center (BTC), one of Branson’s largest and most reputable sellers of show and attraction tickets and lodging, has a couple of suggestion that will help families to get even more value.

A recent BTC press release points out that some of Branson’s most popular shows offer Family Passes which enable families to save a significant amount of money as opposed to buying individual tickets for each member of the family. It also noted that up until now it has been difficult to know which shows offered family passes and which did not, particularly when using the internet to purchase tickets.

Branson Tourism Center’s Internet Family Pass Identification System virtually eliminates that problem. Lianne Milton, the co-owner of Branson Tourism Center said, “At Branson Tourism Center our passion is helping the customer have a great Branson experience and that experience starts with great customer service.” She continued, “The Internet Family Pass Identification System is an extension of that service.”

Milton pointed out that Branson Tourism Center’s has two major web sites its new transactional website, www.BransonOnTheWeb.com, for those potential Branson visitors who want to make their own online reservations and its signature website www.BransonTourismCenter.com. The main website is specifically designed for personal interaction between the potential Branson visitor and a trained Branson Tourism Center Travel Specialist via the 800 number listed on the website, 1-800-785-1550.

Branson Tourism Center’s Internet Family Pass Identification System makes it very simple to find those Branson shows that offer Family Passes. On www.BransonOnTheWeb.com there is a “Family Pass” filter that can be used with its advanced state of the art search engine to display just those shows offering Family Passes. On www.BransonTourismCenter.com, a list of just those Branson shows offering Family Passes is available by selecting the “Family Pass” entry from the top of the sites Show Schedule.

Paul Miller, General Manager for BTC said it is not uncommon for Branson shows to let small children, generally ages four or less, in for free providing they are sitting on the lap of someone who has purchased a ticket. He points out that during the summer months, a few shows are also providing free tickets for children up to ages 17.

Miller further advised that on www.BransonOnTheWeb.com the prices will show “Free” for the applicable ages if that is an option a particular show offers. For those using the free personal service provided by www.BransonTourismCenter.com and purchasing their tickets via the 1-800-785-1550 number, the BTC Travel Specialist will provide that information for a particular show.

  • Oak Ridge Boys only Branson summer appearance

    The legendary Oak Ridge Boys.

Things just keep on getting better as Branson, the live music show capital of the world, celebrates 50 years of live music shows. The fabulous Oak Ridge Boys will be performing their only summer appearance in Branson with 8:00 p.m. performances on July 23 and 24 at the Oak Ridge Boys Theatre.

Paul Miller, General Manager for the Branson Tourism Center said the recent addition of the legendary group to their Branson performance schedule provides an additional opportunity for Branson visitors to experience the performance of this dynamic group. Miller points out that the summer performances are in addition to the Oak Ridge Boys scheduled appearance during September, October, and November.

In over three decades of performing, the Oak Ridge Boys have had one double platinum album, three platinum albums, and 12 gold albums plus over 30 Top Ten hits and more than a dozen national Number One singles. In addition to many others, their hits include “Fancy Free,” “Gonna Take A Lot Of River,” “Elvira,” “Thank God For Kids,” “American Made,” “Bobbie Sue,” “Dream On” and “I Guess It Never Hurts To Hurt Sometimes.”

The Oak Ridge Boys website, in discussing the groups Branson appearances, states, “This year they are featuring many songs from their new critically acclaimed Spring Hill Music CD, The Boys Are Back. The CD takes The Oaks in a new direction of exploration and innovation. Songs include selections from noted songwriters John Lee Hooker to Neil Young and from blues classics to rockers like The White Stripes’ ‘Seven Nation Army.’” It will be a treat for young and old.”

Their distinctive four part harmonies have resulted in one of the most recognizable musical sounds in the music industry. Among many other honors the Oak Ridge Boys have earned Dove, Grammy, CMA and ACM awards and, in September of 2008, were awarded the coveted Academy of Country Music’s “Pioneer Award.”

  • Brule’ a unique special Branson entertainment experience

    Flutist Nicole LaRoche

Every now and then an entertainment opportunity comes along that is special. Brule’ is one of those opportunities. It is an exciting experience in music, sight, and history conveying the spirit of our country’s Native American culture through a beautiful moving and touching combination of music, dance and narration as Native American music joins America’s musical mainstream.

Except for one piece of traditional Native American music, all the music in Brule’ & AIRO (American Indian Rock Opera) is written by Paul LaRoche who also does most of the shows narration. LaRoche was adopted off the Brule Sioux reservation when he was an infant and, until his mid thirties, knew nothing of his Native American heritage believing he was French Canadian.

During that time he was a musician, married and had a family. It was only after his adoptive parents died that he discovered his Native American heritage. He went home to the reservation and reunited with his “family” on Thanksgiving Day 1993. The discovery of his heritage drastically altered his life and since then he has used his musical talents for humanitarian causes and to help integrate the proud heritage of Native American music with mainstream music.

    Thirza Defoe performing an
    exiciting,energetic, and amazing
    version of the Hoop Dance.

What makes this show so special is that the music, though original, has a comfortable spirit to it that moves ones heart and mind. It and the Native American Dancing and “regalia,” (Native American dress) is masterfully choreographed giving the show a distinctive musical sound resulting in one of the most entertaining, educational, and moving shows in Branson.

The Native American band Brule’ and AIRO is composed of LaRoche on Keyboards, Shane LaRoche playing a variety of guitars, Moses Brings Plenty and Lowery Begay on the Traditional Native American Drums, Kurt Olson playing non Native American drum’s the Drum Kit and Nicole LaRoche, playing the Flute. Both Shane and Nicole are the children of LaRoche and his wife Kathy who is also the group’s manager.

To say the sound this group makes is unique would be an understatement. The original musical score with the hauntingly beautiful and spiritual Native American music as its base, the sound of the Traditional Native American drums and “wooden” flute artfully blended into the key board, drums, and guitars is a memorable entertainment experience that will not soon be forgotten.

They are all excellent musicians but it is the flutist, Nicole LaRoche, who gives Brule’ that unique musical sound, special energy, and upfront “musical personality” that helps makes the show so special. The really interesting thing is that she does it with virtually no personal audience interaction except for her playing. Although classically trained and a past member of the Minneapolis Youth Symphony the sound coming from her flute these days is anything but classical.

Nicole plays a regular steel flute in the show, but the sound coming out of that flute sounds like the wooden flute that male Native Americans used for courtship. In honor of the tradition of only male Native Americans playing the wooden flute, she has developed a unique technique of getting the sound of the Native American wood flute on a steel flute. It is an amazing thing to hear and experience.

As wonderful and unique as the music is, a large part of the enjoyment of the show and sharing the group’s Native American culture relates to the integration of Native American dancing into the show. Each dance is explained within LaRoche’s narrative becoming a seamless and meaningful part of the show.

The cast’s dancers are Lowery Begay, Lewis St Cyr, Petur Redbird, Kele Crisp, Nikki Crisp, Chris Estes, Linda Thompson and Thirza Defoe. Two dance highlights would be the hoop dancing done by Thirza Defoe and the “Honor Dance” including the “Wounded Warrior” and “Eagle Dance” which was beautifully done.

This show is easily the most unique show in Branson with a musicianship, choreography, dancing, native “regalia,” message, and spirit that rivals the best Branson has to offer. Brule’ is playing at the RFD Theatre through July 19 and will come back with a Christmas show during the first two weeks of November. For additional information on Brule’ & AIRO contact Branson Tourism Center at 1-800-785-1550 or visit their website www.BransonTourism Center.com by clicking here.

  • Branson star Mickey Gilley cancels shows during recovery from back surgery after fall

    r
    Country music legend Mickey Gilley.

Branson, Missouri, called by some, “The live music show capital of the world,” is celebrating 50 years of live music shows this year. For the last 20 of them, one of its mainstay superstar performers has been Mickey Gilley performing a two hour music and comedy show featuring some of his 39 hit songs, of which 17 went to number one on the country charts.

Due to an injury suffered in a fall on July 5 and surgery on July 7, Gilley will not be performing his show pending his full recovery. A press release on the fall was released dated Jul 10, 2009 stating:

“On Sunday July 5, 2009, Mickey Gilley suffered a fall in Branson, MO. As a result of the fall, Mickey Gilley suffered a back injury that required surgery on Tuesday, July 7, 2009. Gilley came through surgery successfully, and is expected to make a full recovery. Gilley will soon be transferred to a Houston, TX medical facility for further treatment. Gilley’s scheduled performances have been canceled pending his full recovery."

Paul Miller, General Manger, Branson Tourism Center, wished Gilley a speedy recovery. He went on to say, “Mickey Gilley is a true country music legend and his show is one of our [Branson Tourism Center’s] most popular shows.”

The July 7 back surgery is the second major surgery for Gilley within a year. According to published reports, Dr. Charles Mace of the Springfield Neurological & Spine Institute in Springfield, MO, successfully performed brain surgery on Gilley to correct problems relating to the early stages of dementia on July 8, 2008.

Although a full recovery is expected, at this time, the precise date of Gilley’s return to the Branson stage is indeterminate. On July 10, a local radio station reported “A spokesman from his theater in Branson said Thursday that Gilley plans to return for his scheduled performance August 1st.” A phone call to the Mickey Gilley Theatre Box office on the afternoon of July 12 resulted in a “shooting for September 1” response.

  • July Family Fun in Branson

Branson, Missouri is known far and wide for its entertaining attractions and shows and is sometimes referred to as “The live music show capital of the world.” However, for families, especially during the month of July, it just might be the “Family fun capital of the world.”

Comparatively speaking, there is more for families to do in Branson, year round, within a smaller conveniently accessible area than just about anywhere else in the country. Where else can a family go and find a world class theme park like “Silver Dollar City”’ an outdoor water park like “White Water,” two indoor water parks, a full service recreational Lake like Table Rock Lake with public beaches and world class fishing, and attractions as diverse as “Branson’s Titanic, the world’s biggest museum attraction,”’ “Branson Scenic Railroad,”’ “The Butterfly Palace,”’ “The World’s Largest Toy Museum” “Dixie Stampede” and many more all located within minutes of each other.”

Silver Dollar City is Branson’s largest and most popular attraction. Even with no festivals going, it has craftsmen, food, and 30 themed rides and attractions offering excitement, thrills and adventure. There are high-speed coasters such as the explosive-launch coaster PowderKeg, named the Best Family Thrill Coaster on the Planet by Thrillride.com, the multi-looping coaster WildFire, the seven story super-swooping Giant Swing and mega-splashing rides like the American Plunge and the Lost River raft ride. Families particularly like it because there are activities and areas that all members of the family can enjoy.

During the month of July through August 9, Silver Dollar City is holding KidsFest featuring the first U.S. performance of JEERK, a Swedish super group that has become a phenomenon in Europe. KidsFest is the most popular of all Silver Dollar City’s Festivals for families because it is specifically designed for kids and families and is held during the peak time of the year when lots of kids and families are in Branson.

There are many things families can do in Branson that are free or at minimal cost. Three that do not cost a thing are the Shepherd of the Hills Trout Hatchery at the foot of Table Rock Dam, a walk along the Branson Landing Boardwalk, and a ride on the free Historic Downtown Branson’s Discovery Trolley.

Branson has a number of other activities from a variety of miniature golf courses, with at least two of them indoors, museums, go cart tracks, and just about any other activity a family could want to do, from cruises on the 278 foot “Show Boat Branson Belle” to Branson’s most popular show and attraction, “Dixie Stampede” with its exciting interactive show featuring 32 horses, stunts and special effects along with a four course meal to movies, helicopter rides, fishing, golfing and shopping.

Branson is fun for families anytime of the year, but July in Branson for families is special. For additional information on activities available for families in Branson call the Branson Tourism Center at 1-800-785-1550 or click here to visit their website www.BransonTourismCenter.com.

  • Branson’s Magnificent Variety Show is aptly named

Joe Tinoco doing "moves" that would make
Elvis proud during the 50’s hit "Hound Dog."

In a town like Branson Missouri, called by some the “Live music show capital of the world,” someone might ask, “Just what makes the “Magnificent Variety Show” ‘magnificent?’” The answer, simply put, would be, “Because it provides a grand, outstanding and splendid entertainment experience for everyone.”

Paul Miller, General Manager, Branson Tourism Center, one of Branson’s largest and most respected providers of Branson show and attraction tickets, lodging and travel services, provided one of the reason why. He said, “The Magnificent Variety Show enjoys the popularity it does because it has something in it for everyone regardless of age or the type of music they like.”

One of the first things a person seeing the show, particularly for the first time, realizes quickly is that this is a very fast paced and exciting show. The other thing that comes to mind is an appreciation for the planning and attention to detail that has gone into the show’s choreography, flow, and costuming to maintain an almost constant level of anticipation and excitement for the audience.

One such detail is the short videos used during the first half of the show to introduce the music of each decade from the 1940’s to the 2000’s. They are educational, add to the total enjoyment of the show, contain something for both adults and kids and help set the mood for the music that follows. For example, the video for the 1940s included the iconic WWII “Kissing” photo by Life magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt, taken in Times Square on Aug. 15, 1945 as the surrender of Japan, formally ended World War II.

When first hearing about presenting the hits of the 1940’s through the 2000’s, some people may not be overly excited, but the “devil is in the details” and the details of this show involves a lot more than simply singing. Almost every number is accompanied by an entertaining production featuring different styles of dancing, costume changes, or some other interesting feature that holds the audiences’ attention and leaves them wondering what is coming next.

It’s not the type of production relating to big sets etc. It’s the type of production that simply entertains as it seamlessly flows from one number to the next. The simple beauty of Joe Tinoco singing Garth Brook’s 1990’s hit “Dance” as Rachel Martin danced; the presentation of the “Tennessee Waltz/” the 1940’s hit “You Are My Sunshine,” sung by “little miss sunshine,” four year old Talya Tinoco; the “Stomp” and the Phantom of the Opera are just a few examples of the amazing versatility of this show, its entertainers and musicians and why this show is entertaining and exciting for all ages.

Even with great production, choreography, costuming and planning when the pedal hits the metal in a musical variety show it is the quality of the entertainers and musicians that determine the entertainment experience the audience will have. The Magnificent Variety Show has a five piece live band made up of Ricky Holmes piano, and Musical Director, Doug Clifford, drums, Brandon Jenson, Bass, J.T. Lynn, key boards and Geoff Clark, guitar. As one experiences their versatility and musicianship during the show it becomes apparent why they are named “The Magnificent Band.”

In a show this fast paced, each of the casts on stage entertainers Joe Tinoco, Tamara Tinoco, Larry Foster, Ryan Walton, Dusty Wooldridge, Elisha Conner, Rachel Martin and Stephani Haygood has to be both an accomplished vocalist and dancer. It is an amazing thing to watch these entertainers perform. Their singing, dancing, versatility and energy is simply “magnificent.” Although her appearances in the show are very limited and strategically placed Miss Talya Tinoco does an excellent job and relates to the oldest and youngest members of the audience in a special way.

This is a magnificently entertaining show filled with excitement, live music and energy that is pure entertainment and enjoyment. For more information and tickets for the Magnificent Variety Show or any other Branson show, attraction, or lodging please call the Branson Tourism Center at 1-800-785-1550 or click here to go to their web site www.BransonTourismCenter.com.

  • Mishka bears all at Branson show

During the middle of June there was an unconfirmed rumor going around Branson that “Yakov’s Moscow Circus” would bare it all on or about June 23. Some were aghast that Branson’s family entertainment image might be endangered and at, of all places, “a circus with children in attendance.” That was only of course, until they found out that what the only thing that would be bared was the real bears that would be coming to the circus for a limited engagement.

On June 23, “Mishka the Russian Bears” started their limited engagement at Yakov’s Moscow Circus. Although Yakov’s Moscow Circus is currently performing a limited engagement at Yakov’s Theatre in Branson running through September 7, Mishka, the Russian Bears will only be appearing through July 5.

Information received from Yakov’s Moscow Circus says it features Andre the Clown and International Flying Adagio Star Marina along with a revolving line up of exciting and unique acts including Irina Markova and her award-winning canine troupe with their feline friends, Pavlina Gyumisheva the Human Slinky, Igor & Denis “The Strongmen of Moscow”, National Unicycling Champion Anthony Soumiatin, Boris the Wonder Dog and now Mishka the Russian Bears.

Yakov says, “Moscow Circus is a combination of comedy, adventure, romance, magical family chemistry and exciting human and animal performance art. It creates a fun story for everyone to enjoy.”

Yakov’s Moscow Circus will be appearing in Branson at Yakov’s Theatre on Tuesday through Sunday until September 7. For more information and specific scheduling on “Yakov’s Moscow Circus” and Branson’s other shows and attractions and accommodations call the Branson Tourism Center at 1-800-785-1505 or visit their website www.bransontourismcenter.com.

  • Three fun ways to stay cool and beat the heat in Branson

Moonshine Beach on shore of Table Rock Lake.

With June Heat Indexes reaching over 100 on some days, summer has come to the Ozarks and Branson a little sooner than usual The good news, according to Paul Miller, General Manager, Branson Tourism Center, is that Branson has lots of ways to stay cool and beat the heat of summer. “Three that can really cool off Branson visitors, he said, “Are White Water, Moonshine Beach, and Branson’s Titanic Museum.”

Miller said that White Water, operated by the same company that operates Silver Dollar City and the Showboat Branson Belle, has 12 acres and two million gallons of cool liquid fun and excitement to help cool the summer’s heat. It has more than 7,000 feet of water slides, a dozen rides and is located near the west end of the Branson Strip.

One of its major features is Kalani Towers, a seven story tall six slide ride. Two of the slides have 300 foot drops enabling speeds of up to 40 mph and four have 312 foot slides located immediately adjacent to each other that permit lane racing at speeds up to 25 mph. Other cooling rides are the Raging River Rapids a two slide ride wrapping around a huge five story high waterfall as riders race to the pool below; the Bermuda Triangle, a fast paced enclosed slide; the Caribbean Plunge and Tropical Twister rapid-water raft rides; Surfquake, a 500,000 gallon wave pool producing 4-foot waves and the Lazy River, a gently moving river for just floating and relaxing.

Miller points out that one of the country’s premier recreational lakes, Table Rock Lake can also offer respite from summer heat. Although most people are aware of the great fishing, boating and other recreational uses of Table Rock Lake, a lot of Branson’s tourists are not aware of the fact that it has a major beach that is readily accessible for Branson visitors to use.

Moonshine Beach was closed last season because of high water damage, but just recently reopened. It is located just north of Table Rock Dam on State Highways 165/265 and is operated by the U.S. Corps of Engineers. In addition to its large swimming beach Moonshine Beach’s amenities include a play ground, picnic areas, a boat launch ramp, flush toilets and showers. It is open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and there is a daily charge of $4.00 per vehicle.

Miller says that another Branson attraction with some surprise relief from the heat is Branson’s Titanic, the world’s largest museum attraction. Like the majority of Branson’s indoor attractions and shows the Titanic is air conditioned, but it has some “cooler surprises” towards the end of the exciting “voyage” as the Titanic approaches and hits the iceberg that sends her to the bottom of the Atlantic. It is literally a chilling experience followed by a real “cool “hands on experience near the lifeboats.

For additional information on these and other really cool Branson shows, attractions, and activities call the Branson Tourism Center at 1-800-875-1550 or visit www.BransonTourisimCenter.com.

  • Cruising Branson’s Lakes

Showboat Branson Belle on Table Rock Lake.

Branson is blessed with so many shows, attractions, and other activities it is sometimes hard to choose what to do from the bewildering number of choices available. However, for those who might want to slow down, relax, and have a unique entertainment experience, a cruise on one of Branson’s two major lakes, Table Rock Lake or Lake Taneycomo might just fill the bill…

The two lakes are very different lakes with Table Rock being the largest and deepest with over 43 thousand surface acres, and 800 miles of shoreline. It is Branson’s main lake for swimming, recreational boating, fishing, and water sports.

Table Rock Lake is also home to Branson’s largest cruise boat, the Showboat Branson Belle. The 278 foot long Branson Belle is a replica of the old time stern wheel river boats and is actually propelled through the water by her two huge 24 foot paddle wheels. On the typical day she leaves from her dock at the “White River Landing, located just south of Table Rock Dam on State Highways 165/265, three times a day for a lunch cruise at noon and dinner cruises at 4 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

A cruise on the Showboat Branson Belle is more than just a cruise. It is about two hours of beautiful Table Rock Lake scenery, great food and quality entertainment. Paul Miller, General Manager for the Branson Tourism Center, advises advance reservations, particularly during weekends, holidays and in the fall because of the popularity of the Show Boat Branson Belle. He also points out that the 4:00 p.m. dinner cruise returns in plenty of time for those wanting to attend an 8:00 p.m. Branson show to do so.

Branson’s Lake Taneycomo is a long narrow 22 mile long impoundment of the White River that flows right past downtown Branson and Branson Landing. Branson Landing serves as the “home port” for Branson Landing Cruises’ 100 foot long luxury yacht “Branson Landing Princess” and the river boat replica, “Lake Queen.”

Although there is narration on sightseeing cruises there is no formal show or entertainment included as part of the Branson Landing Cruises. Most cruises have food and beverage service, ranging from snacks, breakfast, lunch, pizza, or full dinner service, depending on the particular cruise. Cruises aboard either the Branson Landing Princess or the Lake Queen should provide an excellent view of the Branson Landing water front, majestic Ozark bluffs, the beauty of the Ozarks along with an excellent chance to observe various species of ducks, Canada Geese, Grey Herons, Black or Turkey Vultures (buzzards), an occasional Bald Eagle and other birds along with other area wildlife.

Branson Tourism Center’s Miller again suggests advance reservations for these cruises to insure availability. He also said, particularly with the evening cruises, that there is an excellent chance of seeing the Branson Landing Fire and Light Show from a unique water side perspective.

Further information on these cruises is available individually through their respective web sites www.bransonlandingcruises.com or www.showboatbransonbelle.com or collectively by contacting Branson Tourism Center by phone at 1-800 785-1550 or through its website www.BransonTourismCenter.com.

The Walker Family a.k.a. Redhead Express.

According to information received from the Dutton Family Theatre, the Walker Family a.k.a. the “Redhead Express,” will be performing their Branson show at the Dutton Family Theatre starting on July 6. Judith Dutton, speaking for the Dutton Family Theatre, said that a more detailed schedule of Redhead Express performances will be available within 48 hours, but that in general they will be performing at either 2:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. depending on the date during the summerwith additional times possible starting in the fall.

The Walker Family website www.redheadexpress.com, states that the Walker Family is “equally at home playing straight forward bluegrass as they are playing their own unique renditions of old timey and gospel.” It also points out that the show “showcases their four daughters’ beautiful harmonies, original songs, and increasing musical maturity,” while three talented young boys round out the band and “mom and dad add vocal depth, backup, and guidance to the ensemble.”

Through July 5 Redhead Express will continue to performat the Circle B Theatre. The information stated, “Due to scheduling issues in the Fall and the mid-year expiration of their performance contract, The Redhead Express and the Circle B were unable to negotiate a new contract.” Brett Walker of Redhead Express stated, “The Circle B gave us a home and an opportunity to get started in Branson. We will always be grateful to the Horns for that start.”

Apryll Walker said that a lot of their closest business associates advised them “that the matinee and morning show market would be ideal” for their show. They found that the Dutton Family Theater was a perfect fit. Bret Walker said other factors involved with the decision to move was the location of the theatre on Highway 76, a larger stage and the theatre’s state of the art sound and lighting.

For more information on the Dutton’s, Island Fire or Redhead Express shows contact either the Dutton Family Theater at 888-388-8661. For more information on those shows, other Branson shows, attractions or accomodations, contact the Branson Tourism Center at 800-785-1550.

Herd is a well known local Branson entertainer and one of the “Blues Brothers” in the Legends in Concert Show also playing at Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theatre.

Anyone who has ever seen Herd perform knows the professionalism and energy he puts into each performance and cannot help but be enthused about the new show. • What a country, what a show, what a man, and what fun

Yakov sharing Laboratory of Laughter with
    his audience.

From its “Star Spangled” beginning the audience at the Yakov Smirnoff Show knows they are in for something special. Yakov’s unique blend of humor, personality, natural unforced patriotism and ability to establish a rapport with his audience coupled with great production, costuming, and dancing fulfills that expectation and then some.

As one would expect from America’s favorite Russian comedian there is a lot of funny lines and comedy routines. Most of these routines are built around themes and are introduced by full production numbers.

In the typical comedy show one might not expect much in terms of production, but this is no typical comedy show. The dancers, costuming, and music are excellent and choreographed into the show along with excellent sets to provide an exciting quality entertainment experience. To paraphrase the words of Yakov himself, “You might not have thought about production numbers in a comedy show, but you will now.”

The dancers are referred to as the “Russian Dancers” and are they good. They participate throughout the show in a variety of ways from “Secret Service Agents” to “lab assistants,” but it is their dancing that adds a special element to the show. Two of the dancing highlights are the “Russian Hoedown” and the actual performance of “Russian Dancing.” These are some very talented dancers dancing some well choreographed pieces.

In the first half, Yakov’s comedy runs from the Celestial to the Presidential with lots of laughter in between. Not only does it answer the age old question, “How can women love men,” but answers other weighty questions relating to important domestic and world issues as only “President Yakov” could. A highlight is when the President takes random questions from the audience.

One of the highlights of the second half is the “Laboratory of Laughter” which is a mixture of comedy, psychology, laughter and love. You will laugh at the comedy Yakov used in illustrating the importance of laughter to happiness and love. Yet, some might be moved to tears as he describes his family’s first days in New York and their befriending by their landlady. Either way it is a remarkable and unique journey shared in a warm, funny, and caring way.

Although you might not have thought about laughter being the key to happiness, “You will now.” Among many of the relational nuggets of wisdom Yakov shares is “Never go to bed angry. Stay up and fight” and “It takes two to tickle.” Yakov’s comedic wit, sincerity, warmth and his ability to relate to his audience will definitely not only have you laughing, but walking out of the show feeling happy about yourself and the privilege of living in this great nation.

  • JEERK featured at Silver Dollar City’s KidsFest

Veggi Tales Bob the Tomato and Larry
the Cucumber posing with some of the kids.

If Branson, the “Live music shows capital of the world” had a “festival capital” it would have to be its largest and most popular attraction, Silver Dollar City. Already a world class theme park, Silver Dollar City holds a continuous series of varied high quality fun filled festivals throughout the year. Starting with “WorldFest” in the spring and ending with “An Old Time Christmas” in November and December, Silver Dollar City is continually evolving from one fun filled and exciting festival to another. In terms of fun and excitement, “Kidsfest” running from June 6 through August 9 is no exception..

Paul Miller. General Manager of Branson Tourism Center, said, “Even for a place known for its festivals, KidsFest is the most popular of all Silver Dollar City’s Festivals for kids and their families.” He believes that popularity stems from the fact the festival is specifically designed for kids and families and is held during the peak time of the year when lots of kids and families are in Branson.

New this year will the first U.S. performance of JEERK, a Swedish super group that has become a phenomenon in Europe. Brad Schroeder, Silver Dollar City’s Director of Special Events said, “Kids love action, and JEERK presents an energetic and outrageous combination of dance, percussion, music and acrobatics, all in flawless precision.”

In addition, information received from Silver Dollar City indicates KidsFest will feature “kid-favorite entertainment productions” including the “Magic of Peter Gossamer,” an original live stage show from VeggieTales, and “Kid Concoctions.” The Magic of Peter Gossamer will feature comedy, tricks, vanishings and levitations. America’s favorite talking vegetables will star in a VeggieTales live stage show musical adventure created exclusively for Silver Dollar City called “The Invention of Silliness.” The Kid Concoctions Activity Center, is a hands-on activity where kids can make their own creations from the acclaimed Kid Concoctions books and television show.

In addition to all the value added KidsFest activities Silver Dollar City has its craftsmen, food, and 30 themed rides and attractions offering excitement, thrills and adventure. There are high-speed coasters such as the explosive-launch coaster PowderKeg, named the Best Family Thrill Coaster on the Planet by Thrillride.com, the multi-looping coaster WildFire, the 7-story super-swooping Giant Swing and mega-splashing rides like the American Plunge and the Lost River raft ride.

Branson Tourism Center’s Miller reminds those attending KidsFest that the same company owns both Silver dollar City and another very popular family summer attraction, “White Water.” Located east of Silver Dollar City on State Highway 76, Whitewater offers 12 acres of tropical excitement with more than a dozen rides, attractions, and 7,000 feet of water slides creating two million gallons of fun and enjoyment for kids and their families. He suggests those planning to attend both parks can save money by purchasing combination tickets. For further information on KidsFest, Silver Dollar City or White Water call 1-800-785-1550.

  • Choices Branson air travelers make can cost time and money

With the opening of Branson’s newest airport, currently named “Branson Airport,” travelers to Branson now have a choice of two airports to choose from and competitive low cost airfares. Yet, just in case it comes up in a trivia quiz, none of the airports serving Branson are actually located in Branson.

The closest commercial airport to Branson is the Branson Airport (BKG) which is located about 8 miles and a 10 to 15 minute drive southeast of Branson. It has been open to commercial air traffic since May 11, 2009 and is currently served by AirTran and Sun Country.

The Springfield-Branson National Airport (SGF) is located about 50 miles and a 60 minute drive northwest of Branson. It is served by Allegiant, American Eagle, Delta, NWA and United.

At first blush it seems superfluous to even mention another airport and carriers serving Branson with Branson Airport only being 8 miles away. But aren’t there other factors that should be considered also that could be as important?

In today’s economy, it would seem that price might be one of those factors. Although SGF has been serving Branson for decades it was notorious for high prices. Some believe this actually helped pave the way for the private development of BKG based on the fact that it would offer low cost air service to Branson. The good news for Branson air travelers is that in doing so it forced the air carriers flying into SFG to lower their fares to compete.

For example, at 3:00 p.m. on June 7, 2009, www.kayak.com showed that two travelers, traveling from Chicago to Branson on July 11 and returning on Jul 18 could fly round trip to Branson through SGF on American Eagle for $192.20 each. Kayak showed that the same itinerary on AirTran Airlines into BKG would cost $350.90 per passenger. The total difference on the two round trip tickets is $317.40. For that kind of savings, some travelers might elect to drive the extra 50 minutes and 42 miles to Branson.

Sharon Budnick, Manager, Branson Travel Agency, a sister entity of Branson Tourism Center, points out that travelers flying into Branson have more practical and flexible options available than ever before. She said, “Travelers flying into Branson should consider all the factors including price, travel distance and time from the arrival airport, length of flight, scheduling, and the options that are available to the traveler if there is an issue with a connecting flight.”

Budnick also suggests that most air travelers to Branson will need a rental car. BKG is a private airport and has only one rental car agency “Enterprise.” Unlike the vast majority of other airports in the United States, BKG does not permit other rental car agencies to pick up their customers at the airport. She advises travelers going into BKG, not using Enterprise, to have local contact and other appropriate information for the agency they will be renting from prior to their arrival at BKG. The car rental situation at SGF, in terms of choices and manner of operation, is the same as that found in most airports.

  • Peter Pan helps Special Kids Fly in Branson

Recently, five-year-old Parker Strobeck wasn’t too sure he wanted to fly. Parker’s indecision was on the set of “Peter Pan” currently playing at Branson’s “The Mansion Theatre through Dec. 12. But when the star of the show, Cathy Rigby, came out dressed as Peter Pan, Strobeck changed his mind. Parker, along with two other children who have muscular dystrophy got the flight of their lives as they soared in the rigging Rigby uses in “Peter Pan.

As aerial designer Paul Rubin gently pulled the ropes, hoisting Parker six inches above the stage, Parker , of Omaha, AR said, “Don’t put me up too high.” . Within a minute, Parker was swinging across the stage, grinning at his mother, Kerri Strobeck. She said Parker had recently enjoyed his “Make A Wish” visit to Disney World.

Rubin also gave flights to Thomas Canter(CQ), 7, of Ozark, and Xavier Kleiber, 13, from Stotts City. To the children’s delight, Rigby gave them packets of “fairy dust” to sprinkle. “Think good thoughts,” she said. Also watching the event was Mansion owner Gene Bicknell. MDA has personally touched him, he said. He lost his niece Dellena Scofield to the disorder.

A news crew from KOLR-10 in Springfield, Mo., taped the flights for use during the annual Labor Day Muscular Dystrophy Telethon.

Rigby became America’s favorite when she was on the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team in 1970. She started touring in “Peter Pan” in 1974, and said she has done the rigorous show 2,700 times. Rigby said. “It’s maintaining the energy of a 10-year-old boy, who jumps on furniture and runs around the room while he’s singing and then performs aerial ballet, and that’s in the first scene.”

“Peter Pan” staring Cathy Rigby, is playing at The Mansion Theatre Tuesdays through Sundays at 8 p.m. with Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 3 p.m through Dec. 12. For information or to purchase tickets call Branson Tourism Center at 1-800-785-1550 or visit www.bransontourismcenter.com.

  • Branson’s unique tourism tripod

Branson, the live music show capital of the world, has a passion for providing the millions of tourists that come to Branson each year a quality and variety of entertainment that is both memorable and unique. From a world class theme park, its great shows and lakes, Branson provides the opportunity for an entertainment experience that is unrivaled anywhere.

If a person used one of Branson major destination web sites such as www.branson.com or contacted a major provider of Branson tourism services such as the Branson Tourism Center for information about what there is to do in Branson, they would literally be overwhelmed by the hundreds of shows, attractions, and activities available. Yet, if Branson were a camera sitting on a tripod, it would be supported by the three legs Branson’s Shows, Silver Dollar City, and Table Rock Lake.

If one of those legs were missing the Branson of today would be, to say the least, unstable and at risk of losing its relevance as a major tourist destination. An argument could also be made that not only is the Branson of today being supported by the “tourism tripod,” but was built upon it.

Branson’s shows are the first leg of the tripod. It started in 1959 when the Mabe family opened Branson’s first live commercial show the “Baldknobbers, A few years later the Presleys’ built their theatre on what has now become the “Branson Strip.” From that simple beginning, Branson has grown to the point where, because of the the number and quality of its live shows, Branson is billed as “the live music show capital of the world.”

“Silver Dollar City,” the second leg of the tripod, was opened in 1960 by the Herschend family and has developed into a world class theme park that is easily Branson’s number one paid attraction. Silver Dollar City is constantly evolving with new festivals, rides, or shows designed to give its guests “memories that will last a lifetime.” Of equal importance to Branson is the promotion, both in market and out of market, that Silver Dollar City does promoting not only itself but Branson.

The last leg of the tripod is Table Rock Lake. The result of the Table Rock Dam, which was completed in 1958, Table Rock Lake, along with the world class trout fishery it created in Lake Taneycomo, added a vital water component to Branson’s entertainment offerings. This leg of the tripod also represents the natural beauty of the Ozarks which along with Table Rock Lake and Lake Taneycomo contributes tremendously to the uniqueness of the Branson entertainment experience.

In 1958, Branson was basically a small laid back town in the Ozarks. Then, one at a time, the legs of the tourism tripod, Branson Shows, Silver Dollar City and Table Rock Lake, were firmly put in place. The entertainment concept of “Branson” was firmly attached to the top of that tripod and the rest has become entertainment history.

  • Debby Boone lights up Branson

Debby Boone poses for a picture with Linda
and Larry Hoffman of Norfolk, NE as she visits
with them in the Branson Tourism Center’s.
    reception area.

Debbie Boone, who made the song “You Light Up My Life” one of the biggest hits of all time is lighting up Branson. She is in Branson promoting the show she will be doing at the Oak Ridge Boys Theatre during Branson’s Ozark Mountain Christmas. During an interview held while she was making a stop at the Branson Tourism Center, Boone said the show will be a combination of her road show, “Reflections of Rosemary” and a family celebration of a traditional Christmas with all its music and sharing of family.

And what a family celebration that should be. Boone is the daughter of Pat Boone, the granddaughter of Red Foley or as she calls him, “Daddy Red”, and the daughter in- law of singer actress Rosemary Clooney. “Reflections of Rosemary” is a tribute to Clooney. She was an actress and singer who had a number of Billboard chart hits during the 50s with a number of them, such as “This Ole House,” “Hey There” and “Come On-a My House,” making it to the number 1 position on the charts. She also starred with Bing Crosby in the Christmas movie classic, “White Christmas.”

Boone was excited about the fit of her show to Branson’s audiences saying her Branson show, with its combination of great music, sharing of family and experiences through personal, interesting and fun stories and a few other surprises, is a perfect fit. She said, “The audiences that come to Branson appreciate really good music” and emphasized the quality of the music in the show saying, “It is beautiful, melodic, gorgeous music” with great arrangements being played by great musicians.

When asked what song she is currently performing that she had the most personal passion for and why, Boone said that although it could change, depending on the day, her mood, and audience, most days it is “You Light Up My life.” Continuing on, she said, “On any given day that song takes on different levels of meaning to me and the people in my audience.”

Boone said she enjoys the Branson tradition of “meet and greet” where the performers meet with the audience after the show to shake hands, take pictures, sign autographs, etc. She said, “If you don’t connect with your audience then the relationship doesn’t have anywhere to go.”

While she was at the Branson Tourism Center, Debby took the time to meet some of the staff and customers on a one to one basis. As one observed her interacting with them it became obvious that the woman who can sing “You Light Up My Life” with such passion has the same passion for people and was, even if for only for a few moments with each, lighting up the lives of those she was meeting.

Boone will be appearing at the Oak Ridge Boys Theatre Nov. 3 through Dec. 5 as the special guest with the “Country Tonite Show.” The first half of the show will be the “Country Tonite Show” and the second half Debby Boone’s show. For specific schedules, additional information, or to purchase tickets for this show call 1-800-785-1550.

  • Branson’s White Water turns water on for summer fun and adventure

Kalani Towers four 312 foot racing slides with
its two 300 foot drop slides to the right.

Branson is noted for its variety of shows, attractions, and entertainment, but “surfing?” Where in Branson can visitors surf? At the same place where they can enjoy 7,000 feet of water slides, some of which have drops of 300 feet, swim, splash, enjoy island themed foods and relax with their families amid tropical landscapes, at “White Water” Branson’s tropical adventure park

White Water is 12 acres of tropical excitement with more than a dozen rides, attractions, and 7,000 feet of water slides creating two million gallons of fun and enjoyment for its guests. Located toward the western end of the famous Branson Strip, its Kalani Towers literally towers above all the area’s surrounding structures.

According to a recent White Water press release describes Kalani Towers as “a 7- story, 6- slide, multi-experience thrill ride” Two of the slides have 300 foot drops enabling freefall body sliding at speeds of up to 40 mph. The other four slides are 312 foot slides located immediately adjacent to each other and permit lane racing at speeds up to 25 mph.

Jackie Smith, White Water’s General Manager said, “Kalani Towers is our biggest draw.” Smith pointed out that although Kalani’s 300 foot drop slides “are an unbelievable thrill” its four racing slides are even more popular because people and families love to race each other.

The Raging River Rapids is 400 feet of “one of the wildest rides in the park” with its two slides wrapping around a huge 5- story high waterfall as riders race to the pool below. Some of the parks other rides are the Bermuda Triangle, a fast paced enclosed slide; the Caribbean Plunge and Tropical Twister rapid-water raft rides; Surfquake, a 500,000 gallon wave pool producing 4-foot waves and the Lazy River, a gently moving river for just floating and relaxing.

White Water also has a number of Family play areas for all ages, toddlers on up. Little Squirts’ Waterworks is for toddlers. It has tunnels, slides and sprays for water play without water depth. Splash Island is a play area for smaller kids with shooting nozzles, spray hoses and slides, all in a shallow pool and RainTree Island, for the older kids, has aqua-shooters, slides, splash geysers and a massive 700-gallon tipping bucket.

The park also offers a variety of other amenities such as Sand Volleyball, tropical landscapes, shaded areas and an assortment of island themed and other foods. It even rents “Cool Cabanas” complete with fans, television, and seating for up to 8 people.

Paul Miller, General Manager for Branson Tourism Center said, “White Water is one of Branson’s most popular attractions during the summer.” Miller continued, “White Water is owned by the same company that owns Silver Dollar City, easily Branson’s number one paid attraction, and that visitors who plan to visit both can save money by buying combination tickets permitting multiple day access to both parks.”

White Water is open May 23 – September 7. Miller points out that particularly in the early and later parts of its schedule White Water’s days and hours of operation vary. For additional information on White Water, its schedule, or to purchase tickets call 1-800-785-1550.

  • Magic, Fun. and comedy are not an illusion at Hamner Barber Variety Show

Dave Hamner amazing audience as beautiful
tropical birds appear from nowhere and fly
    out over them.

Branson has a variety of “variety” shows, but the “Hamner Barber Variety Show” is different in a truly “magical” and “funny” way. Its variety is straight forward magic, ventriloquism and comedy, but the way they are presented, by two masters of their craft, Illusionist David Hamner and comedian-ventriloquist Jim Barber, separates this variety show from any other in Branson, perhaps in the world.

The basic format of the show is simple, let two of the best entertainers in their respective fields do what they do best surrounded by a great supporting cast, choreography, and production. Predictably, the result is great illusions, ventriloquism, and comedy produced and presented in a manner that holds the interest of audiences of all ages.
There are relatively few shows in Branson that will hold the interest of children for the majority of the show. There are still fewer that can hold the interest of children while genuinely doing the same thing for adults. The Hamner Barber Variety Show is one of these shows. The constant rotation of the magic with the comedy and ventriloquism flows smoothly from one segment to the next keeping the audience waiting in anticipation for what is coming next and it makes no difference whether the age of the audience member is 10 or 70.

The tricky thing about writing about a magic show is not to spoil the surprise of the illusions. What can be safely said however is the magic covers a full range of illusions from the simple elegance of the “Magic of the Silver Coins” to exotic birds that fly off the stage over an enthralled audience, and illusions that “conquer” mountains, “spike” ones interest, and are of biblical proportions.

Jim Barber and Seville or is it
    Seville and Jim Barber?

It is not just the variety of the magic; it is the manner in which Hamner, his wife, Denise, and their supporting cast, present that magic. Dancers A.J. Heard, Ken Brown, and Kelly Nolte, who also double as magic assistants along with Lex Pearson and Michael Maeder, have been choreographed and worked into the presentation of the vast majority of illusions. The result is some of the most beautiful, entertaining and exciting magic available on any stage anywhere.

It could almost be said that the magic doesn’t stop with the Hamner’s because some of the things that Jim Barber, master ventriloquist and comedian, does almost seems magical. The comedy and operatic duet with Seville is amazing, but when it turns into trio that’s “magic.”

Audience members might wonder why Barber opened the bag and kept the “baby,” but they will not be able to stop laughing because he did. Not to be outdone by the Hamner’s and their exotic birds, Barber works with a Chihuahua type character called “Chico Pete” and takes the audience to new levels of laughter all the while demonstrating why he is one of the nation’s top ventriloquists.

The show’s tribute to America’s veterans, living and dead, active duty personnel and their families is a show highlight that is both innovative and beautifully, humbly, and respectfully presented from the heart. In the world of illusions, performers have made people, airplanes, animals, trucks, and even mountains disappear or appear, but none has topped the emotional and patriotic size of this finale tribute illusion. It is a special blessing.

  • Now is the Time to Plan a Vacation to Branson

A paraphrase of the title of a recent article entitled, “Travel Experts Say Now is the Time to Plan a Vacation,” published on the KSMU Ozarks Public Radio website could be “Now is the Time to Plan a Vacation to Branson.” The article points out that despite the challenging economic times people are still planning on traveling and taking a vacation this summer.

It indicated that now was a good time to plan a vacation because, although there are deals still available, demand is ahead of last year and prices, particularly for gas and air fares are on the rise. The article’s initial emphasis was aimed at travel in general turned to travel in Missouri and, specifically Branson, with the statement, “Travel right here in Missouri also appears to be increasing after a tourism lull last year in places like Branson.”

The Branson Lakes/Lakes Area Convention and Visitors Bureau has been stating for months that their research indicated that in spite of the economic conditions, people would still take vacations in 2009. They may not travel as far, stay as long, or spend as much money, but they would still take vacations. The CVB modified the 2009 marketing plan for Branson to accommodate the recommendations contained in the research.

The article reports that Lynn Berry, Director of Public Relations for the Branson Convention and Visitors Bureau, said that current estimates show that the demand for rooms in Branson was up 20 percent and the number of visitors visiting Branson was up 14 percent. On the morning of May 21 Berry stated that those figures were for the first quarter.

Berry continued saying that she is optimistic that tourism will continue to rise in Branson because families can always find something to do whether they have a lot of money to spend or not. She said several shows and attractions in Branson are offering cheaper deals to continue to bring more people back to Branson.

Paul Miller, General Manager Branson Tourism Center, one of Branson’s largest and most respected providers of Branson services said early planning and booking offers travelers the best opportunity to take advantage of the deals that are available. He pointed out, deals aside, early planning and booking also provides travelers with the best selection of prices, accommodations, and seat selection. Miller expressed his opinion, based on the activity he has seen, that the number of visitors to Branson is up not only totally, but on a month to month basis.

  • Great granddaughter of Titanic survivor has Titanic wedding

Branson Titanic’s Grand Staircase with the
ships First Class Maid Jaynee Vanderburg.

At 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912, as the mighty unsinkable RMS Titanic slipped to her watery grave in the north Atlantic, the lives of those passengers who survived were forever altered. As passengers board Branson’s “Titanic-Worlds Largest Museum Attraction” they are handed a “boarding pass” for one of the Titanic’s passengers. As they tour the museum they will find out whether or not “they” lived or died that night.

Those receiving the boarding pass of “Mr David Vartanian” might be interested in a column entitled “From the Titanic, a new life together emerges” written by Jim Stingl and posted on line recently by the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel. The column reports that Melissa Vartanian, the great granddaughter of Titanic survivor David Vartanian, and her fiancé, Vache Mikaelian, were to be married on May 13 at the Milwaukee Public Museum’s “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition.”

The column goes on to say that when asked if she thought getting married around the artifacts from the disaster could be, as Vartanian herself put it, “A bad omen” she said, " Yes. I mean, the thing sank and more than 1,500 people died. It was a tragedy, an absolute tragedy that happened. The difference for my family is that it was ultimately about hope and freedom.” She continued, “For my family, it brought life.”

Evidently, marriage in connection with the Titanic does not seem to be “A bad Omen” for too many people. Mary Kellogg Joslyn, the co-owner of Branson’s Titanic with her husband John Joslyn, said that over 1,900 wedding vows have been renewed and about 90 weddings have been performed aboard Branson’s Titanic since it opened in April of 2006. She said that the vast majority of the ceremonies have been performed on the ships elegant Grand Staircase which, according to Wikipedia, was built using the ship’s original deck plans. Joslyn also indicated that none of the ceremonies have directly involved relatives of any of the Titanic’s passengers.

  • Accessibility is a unique Branson show tradition

This year, Branson, Missouri is celebrating 50 years of live music shows. Millions of people visit Branson every year to experience its fun, excitement, and entertainment and, to a large number of those people, part of that experience is going to one of Branson’s many shows. In terms of the numbers, variety, and quality of its shows Branson is perhaps unmatched by any other destination city and is often referred to as “the live music show capital of the world.”

Dan Lennon, Vice President Marketing & Public Relations, Branson Convention and Visitors Bureau said that about 80 percent of the millions of people who come to Branson each year go to one or more of its shows. He notes that shows are a “Huge activity for Branson visitors.”

In terms of why Branson’s shows are so popular with visitors Lennon suggested one characteristic that, in terms of the majority of its shows, is unique to Branson, the accessibility of its entertainers. He feels that accessibility helps develop an “up close and personal relationship” between Branson’s entertainers and their audiences that brings visitors back to Branson and its shows again and again.

Branson history indicates that “up close and personal” has been a foundational part of its show tradition ever since Branson’s first two shows, the “Baldknobbers Jamboree” and “Presleys’ Country Jubilee,” started entertaining audiences’ decades ago. Steve Presley, Presleys’ Country Jubilee said, “First and foremost it is a way to connect with the people that come to our shows.” He said it is all a part of developing a relationship with their guests and giving them a positive memorable entertainment experience. Presley expressed his opinion that the guest getting the opportunity to meet, shake hands, get an autograph or picture taken with the entertainer is a big part of that experience.

Jim Barber, Hamner Barber Variety Show, said their show is quite intimate, in that it is designed to engage the audience in a very personal way throughout the production. He continued, “We’re not just performing an act to a darkened auditorium, we’re sharing who we are as individuals. Meeting our guests personally after the show completes that interaction allowing us to get to know them as well. It may only be for a few, brief minutes, but in that time we have made many sincere friendships that have continued for years.”

James Garrett, the star of “A Tribute to John Denver” pointed out that the opportunity to meet and interact with the guests after his show not only enhances their show experience, but gives him a chance to thank them for attending his show. He said, “They are the reason why Branson is one of America’s premier vacation destinations” and “We as entertainers should never forget that.”

Melody Byrd, Group Sales & Marketing Manager, Legends in Concert, said, “It is all about our customer” and developing a one on one relationship with them. She said, “We have a passion for making sure our customer has a great entertainment experience and that includes autographs, pictures, and conversation with ‘our stars.’ She continued, “They love visiting with the customers and the customers love it too! It is the ‘Branson’ way.”

  • “Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love” and “Our Sinatra” celebrates two of the greatest

Vocal cast of "Our Frank," Gavin Reign, Heather
Petersen, and Brian Long. (Left to right)

Two of America’s most honored singers are represented in Branson’s two newest shows “Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love” and “Our Sinatra.” The shows are presented by the “American Songbook Dinner Theatre” at the Shake It Up Show Club located at 625 State Highway 165 just north of the “Acrobats of China Theatre.

Both are musical tribute shows to the artists they are celebrating, Elvis Presley in “Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love” and Frank Sinatra in “Our Sinatra.” Although they are two different shows, their format and style is very similar. Both have an excellent live band, a very talented three person cast, the same producer, Jack Lewin, cover dozens of the songs sung by the respective artist the show is paying tribute to, and finish with a “really big” medley of the artists songs.

“Our Sinatra” is a musical celebration of the music of Frank Sinatra. The vocal cast of Brian Long, Heather Petersen, and Gavin Reign do an excellent job of presenting dozens of “Ol Blue Eyes” hits. The live band, directed by its pianist Gary Freeman and consisting of Ryan Hurn on Drums, and Jacob Danks as Bassist added just the right touch of elegance to the enjoyment of the performance.

"Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love" cast: Tony Tuner,
Jason Yaeger, and Heather Gentry. (left ti right)

“Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love” is a musical tribute to Elvis Presley and like “Our Sinatra” presents dozens of Elvis Presley songs during the show. Singers Heather Gentry, Toney Turner, and Jason Yeager do a superb job of presenting the different styles of Elvis’s music. During his rendition of “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” Yeager adds a narrative that surely has “The King” laughing. The band of Robert "Bogie" Bohinc on Guitar, Ryan Hurn on Drums, Paul Purtle on Electronic Bass, and Brent Vaughan on Saxophone did an excellent job.

Currently “Our Sinatra” is performing on Wednesdays through Sunday with dinner at 4:30 p.m. and the show starting at 5:00 p.m. “Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love” performs Wednesdays through Sunday with dinner at 7:00 p.m. and the show starting at 7:30 p.m

  • A unique entertainment experience Silver Dollar City, Bluegrass, BBQ and Branson

2009 SPBGMA winners Daily and Vincent.

Arguably, the attraction that has made Branson, Missouri one of the nation’s primary vacation destinations is Silver Dollar City. It is an internationally recognized theme park, themed on an 1880’s craft village, filled with the excitement, adventure, arts, crafts, thrill rides, restaurants, shows and just plain fun for all ages.

A value added feature of the Silver Dollar City (SDC) experience is its festivals and shows. From its famed “World-Fest” international festival in April to its “Old Time Christmas” in November and December it seems that there is always a festival going on at Silver Dollar City.

SDC has developed a series of themed festivals, each with their own special features and shows. Information received from SDC indicates that 2009 will be the “ “biggest show year ever” and a look at the shows and talent that will be coming to SDC as part of its next festival, the “Bluegrass & BBQ Festival,” running from May 13 to May 31, shows why.

Nine time IBMA female vocalist of the year
    Rhonda Vincent.

The “Bluegrass & BBQ Festival” alone will feature 30 of the finest bluegrass acts in America. Along with about 27 other bluegrass acts, the shows scheduled to appear at SDC for the festival include nine-time IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year and 2009 SPBGMA Entertainer of the Year, Rhonda Vincent, two-time IBMA Entertainers of the Year and 2009 SPBGMA Instrumental Group and Album of the Year award winners, The Grascals and 2008 IBMA Entertainer of the Year and winner of the 2009 SPBGMA Bluegrass Band and Song of the Year Dailey & Vincent.

Of course BBQ will be featured prominently. SDC’s “House of BBQ will feature all types of BBQ from the Carolina vinegars to the Memphis dry rubs and Texas smoke style, with smoked chicken and St. Louis Ribs to Texas brisket and sweet roasted corn on the cob all coming direct from large outdoor charcoal grills and a custom-made 9-foot smoker. Hundreds of sauces from sweet hickory to Carolina vinegar and honey habanero to smoky chipotle will be available to sample.

New for the 2009 festival, on Friday and Saturday evenings, will be an all-you-can-eat BBQ dinner featuring four flavors of ribs an 18 hour smoked brisket and traditional BBQ sides. In addition SDC’s Culinary and Cart School will also have an emphasis on BBQ during the festival.

With all the festivals SDC has and the quality of its shows, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that SDC is an award winning theme park. It has won the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, “Applause Award” an honor it shares with the likes of Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida and the “Thea Classic Award,” recognizing worldwide excellence and outstanding achievement in themed entertainment from the Themed Entertainment Association.

On any given day during the season, Silver Dollar City offers over 30 entertaining and exciting rides and attractions. Whether it’s the G force acceleration of the Giant Swing” through the barn doors, a leisurely adventure ride on the “Frisco Silver Dollar Line Steam Train,” or being launched up to speeds of 53 mph in 2.8 seconds on “Powder Keg,” or an Ozarks based adventure on the “Fire in the Hole” indoor roller coaster, just to mention a few, SDC has rides, excitement and adventure for all ages.

In addition SDC’s 1880’s themed environment has 60 unique craft shops and an assortment of craftsmen demonstrating crafts such as glass blowing, tole painting, carving, candy making, blacksmithing, and a steam powered duplicating lathe just to mention a few. SDC has over 12 restaurants serving a variety of food at reasonable prices.

Silver Dollar City, without anything else is a world class theme park and a good value. When the world class entertainment features associated with most of its festivals and its location in the beautiful Ozarks hills are factored in with the fact that it is in “Branson,” providing access to its entertainment, shows, shopping, lakes, and excitement, the uniqueness and value of Silver Dollar City as a total entertainment experience is obvious.

  • Legends in Concert – a super show of super stars

    Celebrity performer Doug Brewin during
    performance of Alan Jackson.

Saying the “Legends in Concert Show” is just another tribute show is like saying the “Kentucky Derby” is just another horse race. There are horse races and there is the Kentucky Derby. There are tribute shows and there is “Legends in Concert Show.”

In the typical musical tribute show, the “tribute” comes mostly from the music being played. In the vast majority of cases there is no serious attempt to show or portray the artist as they were when they actually performed the songs. One of the amazing things about the Legends in Concert Show is the recreation of the super star performer by the celebrity impersonators in terms of looks, mannerisms, and sound.

It is about as close as anyone can get to actually seeing these legends perform without seeing the original star. Another neat thing is that each show includes multiple stars that are changed at intervals throughout the season so there is always something new to see and experience.

    Tina Turner being performed by
    Lori-Mitchell Gay.

Currently appearing are Alan Jackson performed by Doug Brewin, Tina Turner performed by Lori Mitchell-Gay, Rod Stewart performed by Rob Caudill, The Blues Brothers performed by Justin Clark and Bucky Heard and Elvis Presley performed by Dean Z.

The comments of “Drewgal,” who saw the show recently, sums up the majority of the opinions on this show published on the 1Branson.Com Show Forum. Drewgal said, “I can’t say enough good things about this show!! …the show was amazing! …Everyone had a great performance and they were all so friendly afterwards as well. In my opinion, this is a MUST-SEE show if you are in Branson!!”

Each celebrity impersonator performed a set of at least five numbers. Although certainly subjective, the highlight number of each performance would be “Remember When” from the Alan Jackson performance, Deep River” from the Tina Turner’s performance, “Shout” from the Blues Brothers performance, “These Foolish Things” from the Rod Stewart performance and “Don’t Be Cruel” from the Elvis Presley performance.

Although it is the celebrity impersonators doing the tribute that take top billing, it is the seamless addition of the live band and dancers that make the show into a production and the very special entertainment experience that it is. The Legends in Concert Band is composed of Kevin Allen- Guitar-band leader, Mark Owen-keyboard, Lynn Brown- Drums and Brian Zerbe-Bass Guitar. In addition to being great musicians they do a super job of adjusting to the music, style and tempo of each different artist.

The show’s dancers, led by dance captain Stephanie Drey, are Tiffany Powers, Larry Miller, Jamie Cuyearer, Darcie Jones, and Lyra Sprenger. They are involved with the majority of the numbers in the show and their dancing skill and energy, coupled with the shows choreography and costuming are a joy to watch.

The production of the show ties all of its elements and the varying styles of the super stars being impersonated into a unique entertainment experience that stands out even in Branson, “The live music show capital of the world.”

Paul Miller, General Manager, Branson Tourism Center, reminds visitors the Legends in Concert Show has changed theatres this season. They have moved from their old theatre near the junction of State Highways 165 and 76 across from the Titanic to the Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theater directly across the street from Dixie Stampede. He also points out that in addition to the access from State Highway 76 there is also convenient access available from Fall Creek Road.

  • Annual cleanup removes 14 tons of trash from Table Rock Lake shoreline

Tourists, visitors, and locals using Table Rock Lake for recreation will be enjoying a cleaner shore line thanks to the recent efforts of hundreds of volunteers, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and Table Rock Water Quality Inc. (TRLWQ). TRLWQ is a not for profit corporation whose main mission is maintaining and improving the quality of the ground and surface waters of the Table Rock Lake watershed. On April 4, TRLWQ coordinated the Annual Table Rock shoreline cleanup which resulted in the removal of over 14 tons of trash from the lakes shoreline.

David Casaletto, Executive of TRLWQ, had said the 2009 cleanup was named the “Table Rock Marina Association Shoreline Cleanup,” after its major funding sponsor. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Table Rock Lake was a significant contributor in the cleanup effort including the supplying trash bags, dumpsters for the trash collected and other major support for the hundreds of volunteers participating in the cleanup effort.

According to a statement on its web site, www.trlwq.org, 2008’s annual shoreline cleanup was limited because of the record high water levels. Even though lake levels were back down near normal levels the 2008 levels impacted on the cleanup because a lot of the trash had to be dislodged from the trees and brush it was deposited in while the lake level was much higher.

The shoreline trash comes from quite an area. Table Rock Lake itself has over 1,000 miles of shore line and tens of thousands of acres immediately adjacent to it that are used for recreational activities such as fishing, hunting, camping, boating, swimming, biking, and hiking. A lot of the improperly disposed of trash from those activities ends up in Table Rock Lake and eventually on its shoreline. Gopala Borchelt, TRLWQ, pointed out that the 14 tons of trash picked up underscores how important and necessary the shoreline cleanup work is.

Volunteers picked up more than 1,000 bags of trash. TRLWQ reports on the type of items picked up indicate the extent to which people indiscriminately use the lake to dispose of trash in a careless manner. The cleanup picked up everything from an almost of full truck load of beer bottles at one public use area alone, to bug zappers, propane tanks, TVs, small freezers, and 55 gallon drums

Borchelt expressed the organizations thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors for their efforts.

  • Branson’s Musical History: The Baldknobbers

The Baldknobbers Jamboree in Branson, Missouri, is really a history of music in Branson and the Ozarks. While the band doesn’t have washtubs or a jawbone anymore, the country music show that audiences enjoy each night adheres faithfully to the very beginnings of music in Branson and The Baldknobbers, Branson’s first show.

It was 1959 when four Mabe brothers started entertaining Branson visitors on Taneycomo’s lakefront. Most of the visitors had come for the fishing, and The Baldknobbers Jamboree was good family entertainment for the evening. Today in Branson the Baldknobbers still give fans the best in country classics, "hot" new country, Gospel tunes…and comedy.

Second- and third-generations of Mabes and a cast of 19 singers, musicians and comedians give enthusiastic audiences a high-energy, fast-paced show. "I believe our best quality is that we entertain everyone from the age of 2 to 92," says Tim Mabe, producer and comedian Droopy Drawers Jr. Indeed, kids and grandparents alike enjoy the variety of country music and laugh out loud at the antics and tales the comedians weave into the show.

The Baldknobbers took their name from the Ozarks vigilante group that met on the bald tops, or knobs, of mountains in the area in the late 1800’s. In the early days of their music, The Baldknobbers played during the intermission square dance the very first year of the Shepherd of the Hills outdoor drama, a story about that vigilante era in Branson.

At the Baldknobbers first shows, the instruments actually did include a washtub bass, washtub for rhythm, the jawbone of a mule instead of drums, as well as a dobro or flat-top guitar, and an acoustic guitar. Second-generation Brent Mabe, who plays guitar and bass in the show, remembers early days on the lakefront when he and his cousin Tim Mabe would earn 50 cents putting bumper stickers on cars and for a free Coke would do some cleanup. He says fans have told him, "I remember you playing ball in the parking lot, with a crushed-up soda cup."

It was 1968 when the Baldknobbers built their 1500-seat theater out on Highway 76 and Brent Mabe still remembers the "huge, empty building." It meant quitting day jobs and was a major decision for the group. But it was quite an improvement from 50 folding chairs in the theater on the lakefront.

Today, Tim Mabe is the producer of the show, but as Tim explains, "We don’t have a star, the show is our star and all 19 of us put our mark on this show. Many of the talented musicians and singers have been with the Baldknobbers for many years so our show is collaborative." About the 2009 show Tim says, "In addition to a fantastic show, we will have events all year long to mark this milestone in Branson’s entertainment history."

In 1959 The Baldknobbers sometimes performed for a crowd of just a dozen people. Today The Baldknobbers Jamboree is often a sellout, and entertainers give the same energy and enthusiasm and personal attention to their audiences as they did on the lakefront.

In 1959 The Baldknobbers Jamboree was the only show Branson. Today Branson is known as the Live Music Show Capital of the World, boasting more theater seats than Broadway. But some things never change. There’s still great fishing. And even more great music. Come help celebrate 50 years of entertainment in Branson, with The Baldknobbers Jamboree!

The Baldknobbers Jamboree Show-"The Show That Started It All"-is located on the famed 76 Country Music Boulevard in Branson, Missouri, with performances Monday through Saturday at 8:00 p.m..

  • The Twelve Irish Tenors – A special Branson entertainment experience

“The most beautiful music of all is the music of what happens,” is an old Irish proverb. Having heard “The Twelve Irish Tenors” sing recently it gives one pause to wonder if the writer of the proverb would object too much if the words “when the twelve Irish tenors sing” were added to the end of the proverb.

Branson, Missouri the “live music show capital of the world,” has music shows of just about every type, but even in Branson, this show stands out. Although they dance a “jig” or two and there is a little humor, “what happens” in this show is the presentation of some of the most beautiful, powerful and inspirational musical vocals one is likely to hear not only in Branson but anywhere.

“What happens” with the first notes of their first number, “Danny Boy,” is that the audience realizes they are in for a special entertainment experience. From that number to their last, the sheer beauty, power and harmony of their singing entertains, inspires and amazes.

The “Twelve Irish Tenors” must all have Irish heritage and over half of them are actually from Ireland. Arguably, each of the twelve could be successful as a soloist in their own right, but what is inarguable is “what happens” when their voices are combined.

The show covers Irish favorites such as “Danny Boy,” “Cockles and Mussels,” “Sweet Rosie O’ Grady” and “Irish Eyes Are Smiling,” some of the most inspirational songs ever written such as “You Raised Me Up,” “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” and “I Believe, ” as well as “Funiculi Funicula,” “O Solo Mio,” “Nessum Dorma,” “Unchained Melody,” “Bridge Over Troubled Waters, a Glenn Miller Medley and many more. And, although the range and variety of the music covered is impressive, even more so is manner in which they are presented.

The Neapolitan song “O Solo Mio,” was written in 1898 and has been performed by many artists in that language over the years. Elvis Presley did a version of the song in English entitled “It’s Now or Never.” The shows presentation of this classic, featuring Jonathon Fisk Hill is a unique powerful performance that is a show highlight.
The very next number, “Toreador” featuring a unique duet by Brian Walker and Seph Stanek was another highlight followed by a powerful and beautiful performance of “You Raise Me Up” featuring Brian Walker on the fiddle and Ron Remeke on the vocal which was yet another show highlight and therein lies the strength, power and beauty of this show.

From the beginning to the end it is one amazing performance after another covering just about every music genre. It makes no difference if the song is an Irish folksong like “Phil the Flutter’s Ball,” an old favorite such as “Unchained Melody,” the aria “Nessun Dorma,” or a song that was recorded by the Beatles on their first album, “Twist and Shout.”

Although it has been said previously, the strong powerful voices of the Twelve Irish Tenors coupled with the unique and varied way in which each number is performed makes it worth repeating. This show has “some of the most beautiful, powerful and inspirational musical vocals one is likely to hear not only in Branson, but anywhere.”

“The Twelve Irish Tenors” are currently appearing at the Branson Variety Theatre.
